Value for money
BA donation unlocks four extras, and adding reminders from a browser needs a subscription. The site publishes no prices for either. Google Play only shows a range of $0.99 to $19.99 per item. Hard to judge what you can't see, so a B.
AYou name your own price, from $0.99 a year, and that unlocks every in-app feature. Tasks.org Cloud, with sync, list sharing and an email-to-task inbox, is $29.99 a year, or $2.99 monthly. Both sit well under what to-do apps typically charge.
Free plan and trial
AThe app is free to use, with text, phone call, parking and birthday reminders and Google Drive backup. Most people could stay there. Location reminders, the widget, the full repeat options and priorities wait behind a donation.
AFree on Android with no account: unlimited tasks, lists, tags and reminders, recurring tasks, location reminders, and sync with Google Tasks and Microsoft To Do. No ads either. Most people could stay here for good.
Features
BIt only does reminders, and it does them properly: one-tap call reminders, a parking countdown, birthdays warned days ahead, and place-based alerts with a range you pick. There are no lists, projects or subtasks, which is on purpose.
ASubtasks nested as deep as you like, filters, manual sorting, repeats and reminders tied to a place. Then the sync choices: Google Tasks, Microsoft To Do, CalDAV, EteSync or its own Cloud, which adds sharing with up to five guests and an email-to-task inbox.
Ease of use
BThere's no App Store rating to go on, since it isn't on iPhone. It's an app you install and use: pick a reminder type, set the time, done. Backups to Google Drive can run by themselves.
BInstall it and start a list, with no account and no internet needed. Hooking it to your own CalDAV server or DAVx⁵ takes more doing, but that's a choice. There's no rating on record to go by, so it stops at a B.
Platforms and integrations
DAndroid only, with a Wear OS companion for your watch. The browser page isn't a separate app. It just sends reminders to the phone, and it needs both the app and a subscription.
BAndroid, plus desktop apps for Mac, Windows and Linux that are labeled alpha and need a subscription. It syncs with a lot: Google Tasks, Microsoft To Do, CalDAV, EteSync. But there's no iPhone or web app. Apple devices get there through Apple Reminders over CalDAV.

Who each one suits

COL Reminder

  • Android users who want timed alerts, not a task manager
  • Reminders to make a phone call or move a parked car
  • People who want reminders backed up to Google Drive

Tasks.org

  • Android users who want a task list that works with no account
  • People syncing tasks with their own CalDAV server or EteSync
  • Google Tasks or Microsoft To Do users who want a fuller Android client

Worth knowing

COL Reminder

  • It is an Android app only; the web page just sends reminders to the phone app and needs both the app and a subscription.
  • The developer states that it is a reminder app and should not be confused with a to-do list.
  • Location-based reminders, the active-reminders widget, the full repeat options and priorities are unlocked only by a donation.
  • The site publishes no prices for donations or the web subscription; Google Play shows only a range of $0.99 to $19.99 per item.

Tasks.org

  • There is no iPhone or web app. Apple devices reach Tasks.org lists through Apple Reminders over CalDAV.
  • The desktop apps are labeled alpha and need a subscription, and the maker says matching the Android app's features will take a while.
  • Tasks.org Cloud sync needs the $2.99 a month or $29.99 a year subscription; the name-your-price tier does not include it.
  • On Google Play installs, custom themes and icons and sync through DAVx⁵, CalDAV or EteSync all need a subscription.

Key features

COL Reminder

Text and phone call reminders
A text reminder notifies at an exact time, and a call reminder notifies when a call is due and dials the number with one tap.
Parking and birthday reminders
A parking reminder runs a countdown for a short-term parking spot, and birthday reminders notify a few days ahead and again on the day.
Location-based reminders
A donation feature that triggers a reminder on entering or leaving a place, with a selectable distance range such as 50 m, 100 m or 1000 m.
Repeat options and priorities
Donors get six repeat types from minutely to yearly, with an end date or a set number of events, and up to four priorities with their own ringtones and vibration.
Backup and Wear OS
Reminders can be backed up to Google Drive automatically or to local storage, and a Wear OS app delivers notifications to a watch.
COL Reminder Web
A browser page for Chrome or Firefox that sends new reminders to the phone and shows the phone's notifications on the computer. It needs a subscription bought in the app.

Tasks.org

Offline lists with deep subtasks
Tasks, lists, tags and reminders are unlimited and need no account or internet connection. Filters, manual sorting and subtasks nested to any depth are included.
Recurring tasks and location reminders
Tasks can repeat and send notifications, and reminders can be tied to a location. Both are part of the free Android app.
Sync with services you already use
Google Tasks and Microsoft To Do connect for free. Sync through DAVx⁵, a CalDAV server, EteSync or DecSync CC needs an in-app subscription.
Tasks.org Cloud
The maker's CalDAV-based sync service adds list sharing with up to five guests, an email-to-task inbox and app passwords for clients such as Apple Reminders.
Desktop apps in alpha
Early-access apps for macOS, Windows and Linux sync with Tasks.org Cloud, Google Tasks, CalDAV and EteSync. One subscription unlocks both Android and desktop.
Open source without ads
The Android and desktop apps are licensed under the GNU GPLv3 and show no ads. Installs from F-Droid unlock in-app features without a subscription.
