Worth knowing
Daylio
- No desktop or web version: Daylio says the app is not being developed for computers or the web.
- There is no real-time sync; using a second device means a manual backup and restore each time you switch.
- Advanced stats, automatic backups, PDF export and, on iOS, the PIN lock require Premium.
- Daylio's site publishes no price list; Premium prices appear in the app and on app store listings.
Moodistory
- There is no web or desktop version: the apps are for iPhone and Android, plus an Apple Watch app.
- The vendor publishes no price list; the US App Store shows Premium purchases from $2.99 to $39.99 without billing periods.
- The vendor's pages do not say which features the free version leaves out.
- Data lives only on the device, so moving to a new phone depends on a backup you make yourself.
Key features
Daylio
- Two-tap entries
- A daily entry is a mood plus the activities you did. Notes, writing templates, photos and voice memos can be added, and moods and activities are customizable.
- Stats and correlations
- Entries feed weekly, monthly and yearly charts, from simple mood lines to correlations between moods and activities. Advanced stats are a Premium feature.
- Year in Pixels
- A single chart shows the whole year with one dot for each day. It can be exported as a picture and shared with other people.
- Goals and reminders
- Daily, weekly or monthly goals sit alongside the diary, with achievements for habits. The free version limits the number of goals and reminders.
- On-device storage and backups
- Entries are stored on the phone and are not sent to Daylio's servers. Backups go to iCloud on iOS or Google Drive on Android; automatic backups need Premium.
- Lock and export
- The diary can be locked with a PIN, fingerprint or Face ID, and entries export to PDF or CSV. The PIN lock on iOS and PDF export are Premium features.
Moodistory
- Entries without typing
- Swipe to set a mood and tap icons from more than 180 events in 10 categories. Notes, photos and a location can be added, and a day can hold as many entries as you like.
- Customizable mood scale
- The rating scale can be set anywhere from 2 to 11 points, and an odd-numbered scale leaves room for a neutral mood. Events, colors and the app icon can be changed too.
- Year in Pixels calendar
- A color-coded calendar gives yearly, monthly and daily views, and you can drill down from a year to a single entry to see what was behind a mood.
- Mood analysis
- An analysis view shows which events go with good or bad moods, how mood moves across an average day and which weekday is usually best. On iOS it can read Apple Health data such as sleep.
- PDF, CSV export and CSV import
- Entries export to a printable PDF that is built on the device, or to CSV. Mood data from other apps, Excel or Google Sheets can be imported as CSV.
- On-device storage, lock and backups
- Data is stored only on the phone and can be locked with face, fingerprint or code. Backups are a manual zip file, or iCloud on iOS and Google Drive on Android.
