Value for money
BPremium Pass is $3.99 to $5.99 a month or $19.99 to $39.99 a year on the US App Store, about typical for a journaling app. It removes ads and adds in-depth analysis, 3 photos a day and sync on up to 5 devices. DailyBean's own site shows no prices.
BThe vendor publishes no price list. The US App Store shows Premium at $2.99, $6.99, $14.99, $19.99 and $39.99, with no billing period beside any of them. We can't tell you what each one buys, so it's the grade we give when a listing can't say.
Free plan and trial
BFree gets custom and special blocks, basic analysis and 1 photo a day, which covers the daily logging. But it shows ads and won't sync between devices. No free trial of Premium Pass is listed.
BFree to download and use, with no ads, going by the developer's Google Play replies. But Moodistory's pages don't say which features are kept for Premium, so we can't tell you where free stops. There's a Premium trial, with its length shown in the app.
Features
BA mood and tapped icons for activities, meals and routines, a monthly mood calendar, charts of how activities line up with mood, and logs for sleep, exercise and steps. It locks with a PIN or Face ID. It's built for taps more than writing, though, and even Premium stops at 3 photos a day.
BIt does mood tracking fully: a scale you set from 2 to 11 points, more than 180 event icons, a Year in Pixels calendar and an analysis of which events go with good or bad moods. PDF and CSV export, too. As a diary it's lighter, since writing is an optional note on a mood entry.
Ease of use
A4.8 from about 70,700 App Store ratings. A day takes a few taps: a mood, some icons, done. You can change the blocks so it only asks about what matters to you.
BNo App Store rating on record, so B is as high as we go. An entry is a swipe and a few taps, with no typing needed, and you can make as many in a day as you like.
Platforms and integrations
CiPhone, iPad and Android only, with no web or desktop version listed. It can sync health data in place of typing it in, but no other integrations are on record.
CiPhone and Android, plus an Apple Watch app. No web or desktop version. It reads Apple Health data like sleep on iOS, and backs up to iCloud or Google Drive.

Key features

DailyBean

Entries in a few taps
Choose a mood bean, tap icons for activities, routines and meals, then add a photo and a short note if you want. Longer text notes are also possible.
Custom blocks and icons
Category blocks can be added, removed and edited so the log tracks what matters to you. Custom and special blocks are included in the free version.
Mood calendar and themes
Each day's mood colors a monthly calendar, building a year-in-pixels view. Themes for decorating the calendar are released every month.
Analysis reports
Charts show how habits and activities relate to your mood. Basic analysis is free, and in-depth analysis is part of Premium Pass.
Sleep, exercise and health logs
Besides notes and photos, you can log sleep time, exercise, a song of the day, step count and menstruation, or sync health data instead of typing it in.
Lock, backup and device sync
The app locks with a PIN or Face ID, and records are tied to an account so they restore on a new phone. Premium Pass syncs up to 5 devices.

Moodistory

Entries without typing
Swipe to set a mood and tap icons from more than 180 events in 10 categories. Notes, photos and a location can be added, and a day can hold as many entries as you like.
Customizable mood scale
The rating scale can be set anywhere from 2 to 11 points, and an odd-numbered scale leaves room for a neutral mood. Events, colors and the app icon can be changed too.
Year in Pixels calendar
A color-coded calendar gives yearly, monthly and daily views, and you can drill down from a year to a single entry to see what was behind a mood.
Mood analysis
An analysis view shows which events go with good or bad moods, how mood moves across an average day and which weekday is usually best. On iOS it can read Apple Health data such as sleep.
PDF, CSV export and CSV import
Entries export to a printable PDF that is built on the device, or to CSV. Mood data from other apps, Excel or Google Sheets can be imported as CSV.
On-device storage, lock and backups
Data is stored only on the phone and can be locked with face, fingerprint or code. Backups are a manual zip file, or iCloud on iOS and Google Drive on Android.
