Best for logging your day in a few taps

DailyBean is a diary for people who don't want to write. Pick a mood bean, tap a few icons for what you did, add a photo if you like, and the day is logged. It's free with ads. It's also phones and tablets only, and syncing between devices needs the Premium Pass.

Who DailyBean is for

  • Great if you want to log a day with taps instead of writing
  • Handy when you want to see how sleep, exercise and what you did line up with your mood
  • A treat if you like decorating a calendar with themes and icons

Who DailyBean is not for

  • Skip it if you want to write long entries, as it's built around moods and icons
  • Not for you if ads bother you and you won't pay, since the free version shows them
  • Tight if you take lots of photos, at 1 a day free and 3 on Premium Pass

Why DailyBean gets a 3.0

Five grades, each with its reason. The GPA is their average: an A is 4 points, an F is none.

  • BValue for moneyPremium Pass is $3.99 to $5.99 a month or $19.99 to $39.99 a year on the US App Store, about typical for a journaling app. It removes ads and adds in-depth analysis, 3 photos a day and sync on up to 5 devices. DailyBean's own site shows no prices.
  • BFree plan and trialFree gets custom and special blocks, basic analysis and 1 photo a day, which covers the daily logging. But it shows ads and won't sync between devices. No free trial of Premium Pass is listed.
  • BFeaturesA mood and tapped icons for activities, meals and routines, a monthly mood calendar, charts of how activities line up with mood, and logs for sleep, exercise and steps. It locks with a PIN or Face ID. It's built for taps more than writing, though, and even Premium stops at 3 photos a day.
  • AEase of use4.8 from about 70,700 App Store ratings. A day takes a few taps: a mood, some icons, done. You can change the blocks so it only asks about what matters to you.
  • CPlatforms and integrationsiPhone, iPad and Android only, with no web or desktop version listed. It can sync health data in place of typing it in, but no other integrations are on record.
