2.4
GPA, above 7 of the 35 other journaling apps we grade
DailyBean is a mood tracker and diary for iPhone, iPad and Android that records a day in a few taps: you pick a mood, tap icons for activities and optionally add a photo and a note. Entries fill a monthly mood calendar, and analysis reports show how activities line up with mood. Blocks, icons and themes are customizable. The app is free with ads, and a Premium Pass subscription adds in-depth analysis, more photos, device sync and ad removal.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about DailyBean, taken from its own pages and our grades.

The report card
Best for logging your day in a few taps
DailyBean is a diary for people who don't want to write. Pick a mood bean, tap a few icons for what you did, add a photo if you like, and the day is logged. Free shows ads and allows 1 photo a day. It's phones and tablets only, sync between devices needs the Premium Pass, and the site shows no price while the App Store lists six.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | There's no price to judge: DailyBean's own site shows none, and the US App Store lists Premium Pass at $3.99, $4.99 and $5.99 a month and $19.99, $29.99 and $39.99 a year without saying what separates them. The amounts straddle the middle for this category either way. |
| Free plan and trial | C | Free covers the daily logging, with custom and special blocks, basic analysis and 1 photo a day, but you'll meet the caps quickly: ads on screen, no sync between devices, and the in-depth analysis held back. No trial of Premium Pass is listed. |
| Features | C | It does tap-logging fully, with a mood bean, icons for activities, meals and routines, a mood calendar, charts against your mood and logs for sleep, exercise and steps. But that's a smaller job than journaling: writing is a short note, and even Premium stops at 3 photos a day. |
| Ease of use | A | 4.81 from about 70,700 App Store ratings. A day takes a few taps, a mood and some icons, and you can change the blocks so it only asks about what you track. |
| Platforms and integrations | C | Phones and tablets only: iPhone, iPad and Android, with no web or desktop version listed, and sync across them capped at 5 devices on Premium Pass. It can read health data in place of typing it in, and no other integrations are on record. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who DailyBean is for
- Fits if you want to log a day with taps instead of writing
- Works for seeing how sleep, exercise and what you did line up with your mood
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you want to write long entries, as it's built around moods and icons
- Not for you if ads bother you and you won't pay, since the free version shows them
- Tight if you take lots of photos, at 1 a day free and 3 on Premium Pass
- Not for you if you want sync or a computer version, as sync needs Premium Pass and it's phones and tablets only
- Watch out: the site shows no price, and the App Store lists Premium Pass at three monthly and three yearly prices
Good to know
Good for
- People who want to log a day with taps instead of writing
- Seeing how activities, sleep and exercise line up with mood

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
You could make this
A journal at its plainest is dated entries of text and photos.
What DailyBean does at its core is mood tracking, daily notes and habit tracking, and that is the kind of thing an AI app builder makes well. You would give up one thing, listed below, and little else. It costs $47.88 a year. An AI app builder starts at about $19 a month on our listings, and you only need it while you build.
What you could make
- Mood tracking, daily notes and habit tracking: an app builder makes these well.
What you could not
- A real app for iOS and Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
What this rests on. DailyBean’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
