|---|---|---|
| Value for money | A$69.99, once, for one person or one computer. That's about a year of a typical notes subscription here, and maintenance releases and minor feature updates are free after that. A family in one household can share the 2-user licence at $111.98. | CStarter is $99 a year, about $8.25 a month, or $14.99 paid monthly. That's the dear end of a category that typically starts at $5.99, and it still stops at 1,000 notes and 3 devices. Unlimited everything is Advanced, at $249.99 a year. |
| Free plan and trial | CNo free plan. There's a fully functional 30-day trial, with reminders popping up now and then. The listing doesn't say it asks for a card. A month is enough to find out if it suits your filing. | BThere is a free plan, but it's small: 50 notes, 1 notebook, 1 GB of storage and sync on a single device. So it's your phone or your laptop, not both. Paid plans have a 7-day trial. |
| Features | BA capture key for any app, email archiving from Apple Mail and Outlook, web pages saved as archives or PDF, search with Boolean operators, nested tags, smart folders and encrypted libraries. Solid. But it still leans on Rosetta 2 on Apple silicon, and nothing of its own syncs to a phone. | AA Web Clipper for Chrome, Firefox and Safari, document scanning, and search that takes Boolean and location queries or finds related notes by meaning. Add tasks with reminders, Google and Microsoft calendars, an AI assistant, meeting transcripts and shared notes edited in real time. |
| Ease of use | BPress the capture key and the thing you're looking at is filed. Libraries are plain Finder folders, so there's no new system to learn. No App Store rating is on record to go by, so a B is as high as we go. | B4.4 from about 78,000 App Store ratings. Reviews going back several years report crashes, freezes or unsaved edits in the iPhone and iPad app, sometimes after a big update. |
| Platforms and integrations | DMac only. On an iPhone or iPad you can read a library kept in cloud storage with apps such as Files, but there's no EagleFiler app. On the Mac it works with Apple Mail, Outlook, Alfred, LaunchBar and ScanSnap scanners. | AWeb, Mac, Windows, iPhone, Android and a browser clipper, with Google Drive, Gmail, Slack and Outlook connected. An MCP connector lets Claude and ChatGPT work with your notes. No Linux app, though. |
| Best for | filing documents and old email on a Mac | a searchable archive of clippings, scans and notes |

Worth knowing
EagleFiler
- It is a Mac app only; on iPhone and iPad a library kept in cloud storage can be read with apps such as Files, but there is no EagleFiler app.
- The app currently relies on Rosetta 2 on Apple silicon Macs; the vendor says a native rewrite will be finished before macOS 28.
- Mac App Store purchases are single-user only and do not qualify for family packs, volume or educational discounts, or upgrade pricing.
- Major version upgrades are free only within six months of buying the previous version; after that they are offered at a discount.
Evernote
- The Free plan is limited to 50 notes, 1 notebook and sync on a single device.
- Starter is capped at 1,000 notes, 20 notebooks, 5 GB of storage and 3 synced devices.
- There is no Linux app; the desktop apps are for Mac and Windows only.
- In-note encryption is offered only in the Mac and Windows apps, and AI Cleanup only on mobile.
Key features
EagleFiler
- Capture from any app
- Press a capture key to import the web page, mail messages or file you are viewing, or a quick-entry key to make a note without leaving the current app.
- Email archiving
- Archives mail from Apple Mail, Outlook and other clients with attachments and flags intact, stored in the standard mbox format or as individual .eml files.
- Web page archiving
- Saves pages as web archives, PDF, rich text or plain bookmarks along with the source URL, and imports bookmark lists from Safari, Pinboard and others.
- Libraries in Finder format
- Each library is made of regular files and folders in standard formats that other apps can open, with checksums to verify that nothing is lost or damaged.
- Search, tags and smart folders
- Its own index searches file contents and email attachments with Boolean operators and wildcards. Nested tags sync with Finder tags, and smart folders can run actions.
- Encrypted libraries
- A library can be encrypted with AES-128 or AES-256, including its metadata and indexes, and stays searchable once the passphrase has been entered.
Evernote
- Web Clipper and document scanning
- A browser extension for Chrome, Firefox and Safari saves web pages into notes, and paper documents can be scanned in alongside them.
- Advanced and semantic search
- Search supports Boolean, geographic and filtered queries, and semantic search surfaces related notes based on their content.
- Tasks and calendar
- Tasks take due dates, reminders and assignees. Google and Microsoft calendars can be connected: 1 on the Free plan and 5 on paid plans.
- AI Assistant
- A chat assistant searches, organizes and enriches notes, with monthly and per-chat usage limits. AI Edit writes, summarizes, tidies and translates notes.
- AI Transcribe
- Records meetings and conversations, then produces a transcript and summary inside a note.
- Collaboration and MCP
- Shared notes support real-time editing, comments and task assignment. An MCP connector lets Claude, ChatGPT and other compatible AI tools use your notes.
