How we grade them

3.0GPAGrokVery good3.6GPAMicrosoft CopilotExcellent
Value for money
CSuperGrok is $30 a month, where ChatGPT Plus is $20 and Google AI Pro is $19.99. There's a $10 Lite tier, but xAI doesn't list what's in it. And paid features pause when your weekly allowance runs out, unless you buy extra credits.
AMicrosoft 365 Personal is $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year, less than most paid AI assistants start at. And it isn't chat alone: you get Copilot inside the Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook desktop apps, plus 1 TB of cloud storage.
Free plan and trial
BFree to start, with chat and voice, which is enough to see if you like it. But xAI's docs don't say how much you get. They only say the free limits reset on their own schedule.
BThere's a free version with chat, web answers, image creation and voice, and signing in adds chat history and longer conversations. But it runs on available capacity with usage limits, and the pricing page doesn't give the numbers. So no A.
Features
AAnswers that draw on live X posts and the web, deep research, file uploads up to 150 MB, images and video with sound, and a voice mode. Connectors reach Gmail, Google Drive, Outlook, Teams and Salesforce. It's a long list.
AChat with answers grounded in web search, voice, help from your screen or camera, image creation, and Copilot inside the Office apps. Premium adds the Researcher and Analyst agents, and Cowork can take on a multi-step project and hand back finished files.
Ease of use
B4.9 from about 1.5 million App Store ratings, and getting started is as simple as typing a question. But several reviewers describe freezes and crashes, and xAI's own FAQ has a run of answers about subscriptions that don't show up when you sign in a different way.
BIt opens in a browser, and the app comes installed on new Windows 11 PCs, so there's nothing to set up. We have no App Store rating on record for it, though, so it stops at a B.
Platforms and integrations
BWeb, iPhone and Android, with an API, a catalogue of connectors and room for your own MCP servers. But the docs mention no Mac or Windows app, and Companions are in the iOS app only.
AWeb, Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android. It also works inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, OneNote, OneDrive and Edge, which is a long list if you're a Microsoft household.
