Our verdict

Third of our top three AI assistants

For: People who work in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook

Microsoft Copilot covers chat, answers grounded in web search, image creation and voice conversations, on the web, Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android. Paid Microsoft 365 plans put it inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook: Personal is $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year and includes 1 TB of cloud storage. It is third because its free version is limited and subject to available capacity, with usage limits the pricing page does not give, and its Researcher and Analyst agents need Premium at $19.99 a month, where Gemini includes Deep Research free. On the Family plan the AI features are for the subscription owner only.

3.6GPA

Best for people who live in Word, Excel and Outlook

Spend your day in Word, Excel and Outlook? Copilot is the assistant that's already sitting there, and $9.99 a month puts it inside those apps with 1 TB of storage thrown in. The free version is fine for a quick chat, but its limits aren't spelled out, and the Researcher and Analyst agents wait on the $19.99 plan.

Who Microsoft Copilot is for

  • Great if your day is already spent in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
  • Handy when you've just bought a Windows 11 PC, since the Copilot app comes installed
  • Good for households that want Office apps and cloud storage on the same bill

Who Microsoft Copilot is not for

  • Pricey if it's the Researcher and Analyst agents you want, as they need the $19.99 Premium plan
  • Not for you if the whole family wants the AI, because on Family only the subscription owner gets it
  • Tight if you're staying free and like to know your limits, which the pricing page doesn't give

Why Microsoft Copilot gets a 3.6

Five grades, each with its reason. The GPA is their average: an A is 4 points, an F is none.

  • AValue for moneyMicrosoft 365 Personal is $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year, less than most paid AI assistants start at. And it isn't chat alone: you get Copilot inside the Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook desktop apps, plus 1 TB of cloud storage.
  • BFree plan and trialThere's a free version with chat, web answers, image creation and voice, and signing in adds chat history and longer conversations. But it runs on available capacity with usage limits, and the pricing page doesn't give the numbers. So no A.
  • AFeaturesChat with answers grounded in web search, voice, help from your screen or camera, image creation, and Copilot inside the Office apps. Premium adds the Researcher and Analyst agents, and Cowork can take on a multi-step project and hand back finished files.
  • BEase of useIt opens in a browser, and the app comes installed on new Windows 11 PCs, so there's nothing to set up. We have no App Store rating on record for it, though, so it stops at a B.
  • APlatforms and integrationsWeb, Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android. It also works inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, OneNote, OneDrive and Edge, which is a long list if you're a Microsoft household.
