Our verdict

First of our top three AI assistants

For: Most people

ChatGPT puts text chat, image generation, spoken conversations, web search and research reports in one assistant, on the web, Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android. The Free plan allows unlimited text chats, and paid plans start with Go at $8 a month. Plus, at $20 a month, adds advanced reasoning models, projects and the Codex coding agent. Its iPhone and iPad app averages 4.8 from about 11 million ratings. Know the limits: the Free plan limits uploads, image creation, voice chats, deep research and memory, OpenAI says the Go plan may include ads, and Pro costs $100, $200 or $500 a month.

ChatGPT review

3.8GPA

Excellent · out of 4.0 · graded Oct 9, 2026

Best for everyday questions, writing and images

Want one AI app that does a bit of everything? ChatGPT is where we'd tell most people to start. It chats, makes images, talks out loud and searches the web, and plain text chat is free with no cap. The thing to know is that the best of it sits on the $20 plan, and if you live in Gmail or Word, Gemini or Copilot plugs straight into those.

Who ChatGPT is for

  • Great if you want one app for questions, writing help, images and voice
  • Handy when you're stuck on something, like a stats class or an awkward email
  • Good for trying AI without paying, since text chat is free and unlimited
  • A treat if you code, because Plus includes the Codex coding agent

Who ChatGPT is not for

  • Skip it if you live in Gmail and Docs, where Gemini plugs in and costs less to upgrade
  • Pricey if you want the highest limits, as Pro is $100, $200 or $500 a month
  • Not for you if ads would bother you on Go, which OpenAI says may include them
  • Tight if you make lots of images or talk to it a lot on the free plan

Why ChatGPT gets a 3.8

Five grades, each with its reason. The GPA is their average: an A is 4 points, an F is none.

  • BValue for moneyPlus is $20 a month, which is the going rate, and Go is $8 if you need less. No bargain, though. Gemini's paid plan starts at $4.99, and Pro here runs $100 to $500.
  • AFree plan and trialUnlimited text chats for free, which is most of what people do with it. Uploads, images, voice, deep research and memory are there too, each with a limit.
  • AFeaturesChat, image generation, real-time voice, web search and Deep Research reports in one app. Plus adds projects, scheduled tasks, custom GPTs and Codex, a coding agent.
  • AEase of use4.8 from about 11 million App Store ratings. You open it and type a question the way you'd text a friend. There's nothing to set up first.
  • APlatforms and integrationsWeb, Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android, with your chats synced across all of them. There's an API for developers too, and Codex hooks into Slack.

The good

So what do you actually do with ChatGPT? Ask it things. Pretty much any things.

Type "explain standard deviation like i'm twelve" or "write a polite no to this meeting invite" and back comes an answer. Nothing to set up, nothing to learn first.

It's not only text. Describe a picture and it draws one. Take a photo of a handwritten note and it types it out. Tap the soundwave icon on your phone and you can just talk to it.

Need something current? It searches the web. And Deep Research goes off, reads a pile of pages and comes back with a full report.

Honestly, the range is the reason to pick it. Chat, pictures, voice, search and research in one app, on your phone and your laptop.

The stuff that'll bug you

The free plan does run out. Text chat is unlimited, but uploads, images, voice, deep research and memory all have caps. One App Store reviewer says they were cut off for the day after about five messages and pointed at Plus.

It also keeps changing under you. One reviewer says answers got less direct after an update. Another was furious when the button that reads answers aloud vanished.

And like every chatbot, it gets things wrong. A Hacker News commenter asked it to merge two group photos into one, and it kept changing everyone's faces. So check anything that matters.

Then there are ads. OpenAI says the $8 Go plan may include them.

The price ladder gets steep fast, too. It's $8, then $20, then $100, $200 or $500 a month for Pro.

Money

Start free. Text chat has no cap, and for everyday questions that may be all you ever need.

Go is $8 a month. It gives you more of what's limited on free: more uploads, more images, more voice and longer memory. OpenAI notes it may include ads, which is an odd thing to pay for.

Plus is $20 a month, and it's where things open up. You get the advanced reasoning models, more deep research, projects, scheduled tasks, custom GPTs and Codex, a coding agent.

Pro comes in three sizes: $100, $200 or $500 a month. We'd skip it unless ChatGPT is pretty much your job.

For a team, Business is $20 a person a month on yearly billing, or $25 monthly. You need at least 2 people.

What actual users say

ChatGPT has 4.8 on the App Store from about 11 million ratings. No, that's not a typo. Very few apps get anywhere near that.

What do people use it for? School comes up a lot. One student, back at college after years away, says it got them through a statistics class by putting every idea into plain words.

Others lean on it for personal stuff, like talking through a breakup or keeping a journal. Make of that what you will, but it shows how easy people find it to talk to.

On Hacker News you see the practical side. One small business feeds in its receipts and gets a spreadsheet file back, which saved them buying another tool. Another, who runs their own business, says they get by fine on the free plan.

The grumbles? Limits on the free plan, features that vanish in updates, and answers that got less direct.
