The best ChatGPT alternatives in 2026
Four alternatives to ChatGPT, from general assistants that can take over from it to tools that answer from the web or from your own sources. Each pick says how it differs, what it costs and where it stops.
Updated Oct 4, 2026 · 4 tools · How we pick
ChatGPT's Free plan allows unlimited text chats but limits uploads, image creation, voice chats, deep research and memory. The paid ladder is uneven: Go is $8 a month and Plus is $20, then Pro is sold at $100, $200 or $500 a month. OpenAI notes that Go may include ads, and Wikipedia reports that OpenAI began testing ads in the free version for logged-in adult US users in January 2026. The team plan, Business, requires at least 2 users.
Those are reasons to look around, and there is a simpler one: another assistant may be built for the job you actually do. The four alternatives here split two ways. Gemini and Claude are general assistants that can take over from ChatGPT. Perplexity and Gemini Notebook are narrower: one answers from the web and lists its sources, the other answers from the sources you add to it.
The picks run from the closest all-round replacement to the more specialized ones. Prices are the vendors' own, read on the date shown on each tool's page. The picks compare what each plan includes, not how well each model performs.

The picks in detail

Gemini
Closest all-round replacementGoogle's AI assistant, tied into Gmail, Docs and other Google appsGemini covers much of the same ground as ChatGPT. It runs on the same platforms (web, Mac, Windows, iOS and Android), and its free plan includes image generation, Deep Research and spoken conversations through Gemini Live. It also works with Gmail, Drive, Docs and Calendar. Paid plans start lower than ChatGPT's: Google AI Plus is $4.99 a month against $8 for Go, and Google AI Pro is $19.99 a month with 5 TB of storage.
Worth knowing: Paid tiers are Google AI plans that bundle storage and other Google services, with no Gemini-only paid plan listed, and they require age 18 or over. The macOS app needs Apple Silicon and macOS Sequoia (15.0) or later.

Its Free plan includes web search, file creation, code execution, memory and Artifacts, and every paid plan includes Claude Code, a coding agent for the terminal, VS Code and JetBrains. Pro is $17 a month on an annual subscription or $20 billed monthly, the same monthly price as ChatGPT Plus. Claude also lists a Linux app, which ChatGPT does not.
Worth knowing: Usage is capped in rolling five-hour sessions on every plan, with weekly limits added on paid plans. Projects, Research and Claude Code are not in the Free plan, and the Linux desktop app is in beta.

Perplexity
Best for cited answers from the webAI search assistant that answers questions with cited sourcesPerplexity suits the questions you would otherwise put to a search engine. Each answer is drawn from current web content and lists the sources used, and follow-up questions in the same thread build on earlier answers. Pro adds deep research and a choice of AI models for $17 a month when billed annually, or $20 a month on the US App Store.
Worth knowing: The plans page does not spell out the free plan's limits, and Pro and Max are described as for personal use only. Unlike ChatGPT, it lists no Mac or Windows app.

Gemini Notebook
Best for answers from your own sourcesGoogle's AI research assistant that answers from your own sourcesChatGPT's Free plan limits uploads; Gemini Notebook, formerly NotebookLM, is built around your own material. Add PDFs, Google Docs, websites, YouTube videos or audio files, and it answers with in-line citations back to those sources. The free Standard tier allows 100 notebooks with 50 sources each, and it can turn sources into audio overviews, flashcards and quizzes.
Worth knowing: Answers are based on the sources you add, so it complements a general assistant more than it replaces one. Higher limits come only with a Google AI subscription, and no desktop app is listed.

How to choose
Decide whether you want a replacement or a second tool
Gemini and Claude are general assistants that can take over everyday questions, writing and research. Perplexity and Gemini Notebook each do a narrower job: Perplexity answers from the web with its sources listed, and Gemini Notebook answers from the sources you add. All four have a free plan, so either of the narrower two can sit alongside whichever general assistant you keep.
Match the ChatGPT features you rely on
For image generation and voice conversations, Gemini lists both on its free plan. For a coding agent in place of Codex, Claude includes Claude Code on every paid plan. For projects and scheduled tasks, which ChatGPT puts on Plus, Claude Pro lists Projects and task scheduling. For longer research, Gemini includes Deep Research on its free plan, and Claude and Perplexity list it on paid plans.
Compare what you would pay
ChatGPT Plus is $20 a month. Claude Pro is $20 billed monthly or $17 a month on an annual subscription, Perplexity Pro is $20 a month on the US App Store or $17 a month billed annually, and Google AI Pro is $19.99 a month. Below that, Google AI Plus is $4.99 a month against $8 for ChatGPT Go. For a team, Claude Team matches ChatGPT Business at $20 per person a month billed annually, starting at 2 users.
Check your devices
ChatGPT has apps for web, Mac, Windows, iOS and Android. Gemini covers the same list. Claude does too, and adds a Linux app in beta and a Chrome extension on paid plans. Perplexity runs on the web, iOS and Android with a browser extension, and Gemini Notebook on the web, iOS and Android; neither lists a desktop app.
Common questions
Is there a free alternative to ChatGPT?
All four alternatives have a free plan. Gemini's is free with a Google Account and includes image generation, Deep Research and Gemini Live. Claude's includes web search, file creation, code execution and memory, with usage that resets on a rolling five-hour window. Perplexity is free to use with cited answers, and Gemini Notebook's free Standard tier allows 100 notebooks with 50 sources each.
Which ChatGPT alternative has the cheapest paid plan?
Google AI Plus, at $4.99 a month, is the lowest-priced paid plan among the four, and it covers both Gemini and Gemini Notebook. Claude Pro and Perplexity Pro are each $17 a month when billed annually. For comparison, ChatGPT's own lowest paid plan, Go, is $8 a month.
Which ChatGPT alternatives have desktop apps?
Gemini and Claude have Mac and Windows apps, as ChatGPT does. Claude also lists a Linux app, which is in beta. Perplexity and Gemini Notebook list web, iOS and Android apps but no desktop app.
Which ChatGPT alternative is best for research with sources?
Perplexity and Gemini Notebook are both built around citations. Perplexity answers from current web content and lists the sources used for each answer. Gemini Notebook answers from the PDFs, documents, websites and videos you add, with in-line citations that point back to them.
Do any ChatGPT alternatives have offers for students?
Google's US subscriptions page says college students get a free Google AI Pro plan for one year, which covers Gemini and the Pro tier of Gemini Notebook. Anthropic offers a university-wide Education plan for Claude, arranged with institutions rather than individual students.
