The best AI assistants in 2026
Five AI assistants compared on what each is built for, where it runs and what the paid plans cost, from a $4.99 Google plan to tiers at $100 a month and up. Each pick says who it suits and where it stops.
Updated Oct 4, 2026 · 5 tools · How we pick
All five assistants here answer questions in a chat. The useful differences are elsewhere: where the answers come from, what the assistant can do besides chat and which other software it is tied to. Two are general-purpose assistants with image generation and voice conversations. One is aimed at writing, analysis and coding. One is a search assistant that lists its sources, and one answers from the sources you add to it.
Price separates them less than you might expect. Every one has a free plan, and every one has a paid tier at or near $20 a month. The cheaper options sit below that: Google AI Plus, which covers both Gemini and Gemini Notebook, is $4.99 a month, and ChatGPT Go is $8. Above $20, each has a high-usage tier that starts at about $100 a month or more.
The order below runs from the assistant that fits the most people to the ones built for a narrower job. Prices are the vendors' own, read on the date shown on each tool's page. The picks compare what each plan includes, not how well each model performs.

How to choose
Start with where the answers should come from
ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini are general chat assistants; ChatGPT and Claude list web search, and all three have a research mode for longer investigations. Perplexity is search first: it answers from current web content and lists the sources for each answer. Gemini Notebook answers from the sources you add, with in-line citations back to them. If you need to see where a statement came from, the last two are built for it.
Check what it does besides text
ChatGPT and Gemini both list image generation and spoken conversations, and Gemini can also create or edit video from a description. Claude creates files, runs code and presents the results as Artifacts. ChatGPT and Claude each describe a coding agent on paid plans: Codex from ChatGPT Plus, and Claude Code on every paid Claude plan. Gemini Notebook turns sources into audio and video overviews, mind maps and quizzes.
Look at the software around it
Gemini works with Gmail, Drive, Docs and Calendar, and its paid plans bundle Google storage. Claude connects to tools such as Slack and Google Workspace, with Chrome and Microsoft 365 extensions on paid plans. For devices, ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini have Mac and Windows apps, and Claude alone lists Linux. Perplexity and Gemini Notebook list no desktop app.
Compare the plan you would actually buy
About $20 a month buys ChatGPT Plus ($20), Claude Pro ($20 billed monthly, or $17 a month billed annually), Google AI Pro ($19.99) or Perplexity Pro ($20 on the US App Store, or $17 a month billed annually). Below that, Google AI Plus is $4.99 a month and ChatGPT Go is $8. For a team, ChatGPT Business and Claude Team are each $20 per user a month billed annually and start at 2 users.
