Value for money
AFree, with no paid plans. The site says its core tools are free to use and always will be. Hard to argue with that in a category where paid plans usually start around $12 a month.
BWith an academic email, Pro is $10 a month billed annually, so $120 a year, or $12.50 monthly. That's about typical, and it takes every cap off. No academic email? The same Pro is $40 a month billed annually, which is steep. More than 100 lower income countries qualify for a discount code.
Free plan and trial
AEverything is free: Paper Discovery, the Literature Connector, the filters, the SQL panel and export to reference managers. One thing to know: the about page describes a single developer who covers the server costs and may seek donations or a sponsor.
BFree gets you basic search with up to 20 input articles, 2 Litmaps of up to 100 articles each and a monthly alert. Good for one small project. A third map means paying, and so do Zotero Sync and the advanced filters.
Features
BIt does citation mapping fully. Paper Discovery ranks a network by importance and similarity, the Literature Connector traces the shortest citation paths between two papers, and there's a SQL panel for power users. But keyword filters search titles only, because abstracts aren't available.
BIt does citation mapping fully: three ways to search (shared citations, common authors, or AI matching of titles and abstracts), maps you can share by link, and Monitor emails when new related papers appear. Pro adds filters by date, journal and h-index. It finds and maps, though. It doesn't answer questions.
Ease of use
BNo App Store rating on record, so B is as high as we go. Start from a paper and you get a dashboard of tables to filter. Be patient with famous papers: their graphs can pass a million papers and take 3 to 4 minutes to build.
BNo App Store rating on record, so B is as high as we go. Pick a few starting papers and the map draws itself. You'll want a laptop: the homepage tells small screens that creating a Litmap needs a bigger one.
Platforms and integrations
CA web app only, with no phone app, extension or API on the listing. You can start from a BibTeX file and export what you find to Zotero, Mendeley or another reference manager, and that's as far as it reaches.
BWeb only, and no mobile app is listed. It imports BibTeX, RIS and PubMed files, exports BibTeX, RIS and CSV, and on Pro keeps Zotero collections and Litmaps Tags matched in both directions.

Worth knowing

Inciteful

  • Keyword filters search paper titles only; the documentation says abstracts are not available.
  • Graphs for heavily cited papers can pass a million papers and take 3 to 4 minutes to build.
  • The about page describes a single developer who covers the server costs and may seek donations or a sponsor.
  • The tool now sits at incitefulmed.com/academic, next to Inciteful Med, a separate medical research product.

Litmaps

  • The free plan allows 20 input articles per search and 2 Litmaps of up to 100 articles each.
  • Advanced search filters, customizable Monitor alerts and Zotero Sync all need Litmaps Pro.
  • The $10 Education price needs an academic email address; the standard Commercial license is $40 a month, billed annually.
  • The homepage tells visitors on small screens that creating a Litmap needs a bigger screen, and no mobile app is listed.

Key features

Inciteful

Paper Discovery
Builds a citation network around a seed paper, then lists the most important papers by PageRank and the most similar by link-prediction measures, along with prolific authors and institutions.
Literature Connector
Enter two papers to get an interactive visualization of the shortest citation paths between them. It is aimed at scholars bridging two fields.
Iterative graphs
Add the relevant papers you find to the graph and rebuild it to narrow in on a topic. A typical depth-2 graph spans about 10,000 to 20,000 papers.
Filters and SQL queries
Every graph dashboard filters its tables by title keyword, citation distance and year, and a SQL query panel gives direct access to the papers and authors in the graph.
BibTeX import and export
Start from a BibTeX file of a paper's references, and export what you find to Zotero, Mendeley or another reference manager.
Open data sources
The index is built from OpenAlex, Semantic Scholar, Crossref and OpenCitations, and the site says hundreds of thousands of papers are added every month.

Litmaps

Citation-network search
Start from one or more articles and Litmaps returns the most connected papers among their citations, references and co-citations, from a database of 270+ million articles.
Three search algorithms
Shared Citations & References is the default. Common Authors finds other work by the same collaborators, and Similar Text uses AI semantic analysis of titles and abstracts.
Visual literature maps
Results are shown as a Litmap of articles linked by citation. A map can be shared through a public link, with specific email addresses or as an exported image.
Monitor alerts
Monitor reruns a map's search and emails you about newly published articles. Every user can enable it; Pro users can set the frequency, algorithm and filters.
Import, export and Zotero Sync
Import BibTeX, RIS or PubMed files and export as BibTeX, RIS or CSV. Zotero Sync, a Pro feature, keeps Zotero collections and Litmaps Tags matched in both directions.
Advanced search filters
Pro users can narrow results by publication date, keyword, author, journal title, journal h-index and SJR quartile.
