How we grade them
| 3.0GPAjtx BoardVery good | 3.0GPASnaptickVery good | |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | AThe Pro upgrade is an in-app purchase that Google Play lists at $0.99 to $3.49, and the app's code treats it as a one-off. That's pocket change next to a subscription. The exact price isn't shown on the store page. | AFree, ad-free and open source under the GPL-3.0 license, with no paid version. The developer takes donations through Ko-fi, Buy Me a Coffee and PayPal. That's it for money. |
| Free plan and trial | AThe Google Play version is free for journals, notes and tasks kept on your phone. The F-Droid edition is free too, with a donations page where the in-app purchase would be. On Google Play, editing synced entries needs Pro. | AThe whole app is free and needs no registration. Timed tasks, the pomodoro timer, the calendar view, the widget and backups are all in, because there's no paid tier to hold them for. |
| Features | BTasks take due dates, sub-tasks, a progress value, alarms and a map location, and can repeat daily to yearly. You can hang them off a journal entry or a note. Solid basics. But geofence alerts are in the Google Play version only, and there, editing synced entries is a paid extra. | BTasks with start and end times, up to 4 reminders each, repeats, a calendar view, a pomodoro timer that keeps counting after you close the app, and a screen that works out your free time around sleep. Good for one day at a time. But there's no account or cloud sync, only backup and restore. |
| Ease of use | BWe have no App Store rating on record, so a B is as high as we go. By itself it's install and go, and it works offline. Sync is the fiddly part: you need the separate DAVx5 app and a server that accepts journals. | BOpen it and add a task, with no sign-up. The fiddly part is getting it: the README offers an APK from GitHub Releases or the IzzyOnDroid repository, not a Google Play link. There's no rating on record either, so a B. |
| Platforms and integrations | DAndroid only. No iPhone, desktop or web version is listed. Through DAVx5 it syncs with Nextcloud, ownCloud, Fastmail, Radicale, Baikal and GMX, but its compatibility list says iCloud, Posteo, Ionos and Infomaniak don't take journals. | DAndroid only, version 8.0 or later. There's no iOS, desktop or web version, and no integrations listed. It can mirror tasks to a calendar on the device and import events from an .ics file, and that's as far as it reaches. |

- Keeping meeting minutes and their follow-up tasks together
Snaptick

Worth knowing
jtx Board
- Android only: the vendor's terms say the app is currently available on Android, and no iOS, desktop or web version is listed.
- Sync needs the separate DAVx5 app and a server that accepts VJOURNAL; the compatibility list marks iCloud, Posteo, Ionos and Infomaniak as not supporting it.
- In the Google Play version, editing entries in remote collections is part of the paid Pro upgrade.
- Google Play lists in-app purchases at $0.99 to $3.49 per item without naming them, so the exact Pro price is not shown; the app's code treats Pro as a one-time purchase.
Snaptick
- Android only, version 8.0 or later; there is no iOS, desktop or web version.
- The README offers downloads from GitHub Releases and IzzyOnDroid only; the changelog records the Google Play link being removed in version 3.1.
- The README and release notes describe no account or cloud sync between devices; task data is moved with the backup and restore feature.
- The in-app update checker contacts GitHub, which the IzzyOnDroid listing flags as a dependency on a non-free network service.
Key features
jtx Board
- Journals, notes and tasks in one app
- Journals hold dated entries such as meeting minutes or a diary, notes hold memos without a date, and tasks carry due dates, subtasks and a progress value.
- Linked entries
- Tasks can be attached to a journal or a note, and any entry can take a comment or an audio comment, so follow-ups stay with the minutes they came from.
- iCalendar standard format
- Journals and notes are stored as VJOURNAL components and tasks as VTODO components under RFC 5545, so other apps and servers that follow the standard can read them.
- CalDAV sync through DAVx5
- The separate DAVx5 app syncs entries with a CalDAV server the user picks, including a self-run one. Infomaniak's kSync, a fork of DAVx5, also works.
- Local storage and offline use
- Entries are stored on the device and the app works without an internet connection; syncing is optional.
- Recurrence, alarms and locations
- Entries can recur daily, weekly, monthly or yearly, raise alarm notifications and carry a map location. Geofence notifications are in the Google Play version only.
Snaptick
- Timed and all-day tasks
- Tasks are created with a start and end time or as all-day items, given a priority, and sorted by options such as priority. Tasks that run past midnight are supported.
- Pomodoro timer
- A pomodoro timer runs for one task at a time as a foreground service, so it keeps counting after the app is closed and stops when its task is completed or deleted.
- Reminders and repeating tasks
- Each task can carry up to 4 reminders with custom offsets, and repeating tasks send a notification on the days they recur. A reminder notification can start a pomodoro.
- Calendar view, sync and ICS import
- A calendar view shows tasks by date and lets you create and edit them there. Tasks can be mirrored to a calendar on the device, and events can be imported from an .ics file.
- Free-time analysis
- A free-time screen works out the time left in the day around the tasks you have scheduled and a sleep time that you set.
- Widget, backup and themes
- A home-screen widget lists today's incomplete tasks and completes one with a tap. Task data can be backed up and restored offline, and themes cover light, dark, AMOLED and dynamic colors.
