How we grade them

3.0GPASnaptickVery good3.6GPATasks.orgExcellent
Value for money
AFree, ad-free and open source under the GPL-3.0 license, with no paid version. The developer takes donations through Ko-fi, Buy Me a Coffee and PayPal. That's it for money.
AYou name your own price, from $0.99 a year, and that unlocks every in-app feature. Tasks.org Cloud, with sync, list sharing and an email-to-task inbox, is $29.99 a year, or $2.99 monthly. Both sit well under what to-do apps typically charge.
Free plan and trial
AThe whole app is free and needs no registration. Timed tasks, the pomodoro timer, the calendar view, the widget and backups are all in, because there's no paid tier to hold them for.
AFree on Android with no account: unlimited tasks, lists, tags and reminders, recurring tasks, location reminders, and sync with Google Tasks and Microsoft To Do. No ads either. Most people could stay here for good.
Features
BTasks with start and end times, up to 4 reminders each, repeats, a calendar view, a pomodoro timer that keeps counting after you close the app, and a screen that works out your free time around sleep. Good for one day at a time. But there's no account or cloud sync, only backup and restore.
ASubtasks nested as deep as you like, filters, manual sorting, repeats and reminders tied to a place. Then the sync choices: Google Tasks, Microsoft To Do, CalDAV, EteSync or its own Cloud, which adds sharing with up to five guests and an email-to-task inbox.
Ease of use
BOpen it and add a task, with no sign-up. The fiddly part is getting it: the README offers an APK from GitHub Releases or the IzzyOnDroid repository, not a Google Play link. There's no rating on record either, so a B.
BInstall it and start a list, with no account and no internet needed. Hooking it to your own CalDAV server or DAVx⁵ takes more doing, but that's a choice. There's no rating on record to go by, so it stops at a B.
Platforms and integrations
DAndroid only, version 8.0 or later. There's no iOS, desktop or web version, and no integrations listed. It can mirror tasks to a calendar on the device and import events from an .ics file, and that's as far as it reaches.
BAndroid, plus desktop apps for Mac, Windows and Linux that are labeled alpha and need a subscription. It syncs with a lot: Google Tasks, Microsoft To Do, CalDAV, EteSync. But there's no iPhone or web app. Apple devices get there through Apple Reminders over CalDAV.

Who each one suits

Snaptick

  • Android users who want a free daily planner without ads
  • Planning a day as timed tasks and working through them with a pomodoro timer
  • People who prefer open-source apps installed from outside Google Play

Tasks.org

  • Android users who want a task list that works with no account
  • People syncing tasks with their own CalDAV server or EteSync
  • Google Tasks or Microsoft To Do users who want a fuller Android client

Worth knowing

Snaptick

  • Android only, version 8.0 or later; there is no iOS, desktop or web version.
  • The README offers downloads from GitHub Releases and IzzyOnDroid only; the changelog records the Google Play link being removed in version 3.1.
  • The README and release notes describe no account or cloud sync between devices; task data is moved with the backup and restore feature.
  • The in-app update checker contacts GitHub, which the IzzyOnDroid listing flags as a dependency on a non-free network service.

Tasks.org

  • There is no iPhone or web app. Apple devices reach Tasks.org lists through Apple Reminders over CalDAV.
  • The desktop apps are labeled alpha and need a subscription, and the maker says matching the Android app's features will take a while.
  • Tasks.org Cloud sync needs the $2.99 a month or $29.99 a year subscription; the name-your-price tier does not include it.
  • On Google Play installs, custom themes and icons and sync through DAVx⁵, CalDAV or EteSync all need a subscription.

Key features

Snaptick

Timed and all-day tasks
Tasks are created with a start and end time or as all-day items, given a priority, and sorted by options such as priority. Tasks that run past midnight are supported.
Pomodoro timer
A pomodoro timer runs for one task at a time as a foreground service, so it keeps counting after the app is closed and stops when its task is completed or deleted.
Reminders and repeating tasks
Each task can carry up to 4 reminders with custom offsets, and repeating tasks send a notification on the days they recur. A reminder notification can start a pomodoro.
Calendar view, sync and ICS import
A calendar view shows tasks by date and lets you create and edit them there. Tasks can be mirrored to a calendar on the device, and events can be imported from an .ics file.
Free-time analysis
A free-time screen works out the time left in the day around the tasks you have scheduled and a sleep time that you set.
Widget, backup and themes
A home-screen widget lists today's incomplete tasks and completes one with a tap. Task data can be backed up and restored offline, and themes cover light, dark, AMOLED and dynamic colors.

Tasks.org

Offline lists with deep subtasks
Tasks, lists, tags and reminders are unlimited and need no account or internet connection. Filters, manual sorting and subtasks nested to any depth are included.
Recurring tasks and location reminders
Tasks can repeat and send notifications, and reminders can be tied to a location. Both are part of the free Android app.
Sync with services you already use
Google Tasks and Microsoft To Do connect for free. Sync through DAVx⁵, a CalDAV server, EteSync or DecSync CC needs an in-app subscription.
Tasks.org Cloud
The maker's CalDAV-based sync service adds list sharing with up to five guests, an email-to-task inbox and app passwords for clients such as Apple Reminders.
Desktop apps in alpha
Early-access apps for macOS, Windows and Linux sync with Tasks.org Cloud, Google Tasks, CalDAV and EteSync. One subscription unlocks both Android and desktop.
Open source without ads
The Android and desktop apps are licensed under the GNU GPLv3 and show no ads. Installs from F-Droid unlock in-app features without a subscription.
