Who each one suits

Quicksilver

  • Mac users who want to act on files, apps and contacts from the keyboard
  • People who want a launcher with clipboard history and no paid tier
  • Tinkerers who like plugins, triggers and AppleScript actions

Raycast

  • Mac and Windows users who prefer the keyboard to the mouse
  • Replacing separate clipboard, snippet and window utilities with one app
  • Developers who want to build their own commands and extensions
  • Teams that share snippets, quicklinks and internal extensions

Worth knowing

Quicksilver

  • macOS only; the latest version runs on macOS 10.14 or later, with older releases kept for older systems.
  • Many features come from plugins, which have to be installed and enabled before they show up.
  • It is maintained by volunteer contributors and relies on donations for hosting and development costs.
  • On startup it contacts qs0.qsapp.com to check for new versions, which the manual notes a network monitor may flag.

Raycast

  • AI is not part of the free plan; Raycast AI, cloud sync and unlimited notes need Pro.
  • The free plan keeps 3 months of clipboard history and allows 5 Raycast Notes.
  • Top-tier AI models need the Plus or Max tier, at $20 or $50 a month.
  • The Windows app does not yet have every macOS feature; Raycast says it is still bringing them across.

Key features

Quicksilver

Object, action, argument commands
Commands are built in two or three panes: an object such as a file, an action such as E-mail To, and an argument when the action needs one.
Abbreviation matching that learns
An item matches when the typed letters appear in its name in order, and items you pick often rise in the results, so short abbreviations come to select them.
Its own catalog
Quicksilver builds a catalog of apps, files, bookmarks, contacts and more without depending on Spotlight, and rescans it in the background every 10 minutes by default.
Triggers
A command can be bound to a keyboard shortcut, a mouse action, a gesture or an event so that it runs without opening the command window.
Plugins
Optional plugins add objects and actions for apps such as Mail, Gmail, Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Calendar and Reminders. They are found, installed and updated from the Preferences.
Clipboard history and Shelf
The Clipboard and Shelf plugin keeps a history of what you copy and a Shelf for storing items you want within quick reach.

Raycast

Launcher with hotkeys and aliases
Open apps, search files and run commands from one keyboard-driven window, and assign hotkeys or aliases to the commands and apps you use most.
Extension store
Thousands of extensions for tools such as Linear, Slack, Notion and Spotify. The extension API lets anyone with web development skills build their own.
Clipboard history, snippets, quicklinks
Built-in utilities included in the free plan. Free keeps clipboard history for 3 months.
Window management
Window management commands are part of the free core features; creating custom window management commands needs Pro.
Raycast AI
Pro adds Quick AI and AI Chat on a monthly credit allowance. A browser extension for Safari, Chrome, Firefox and Chromium browsers passes the active tab to the AI.
Notes and iOS companion app
Raycast Notes captures quick thoughts: 5 notes on Free and unlimited on Pro. The iOS app carries AI, notes, snippets and quicklinks; syncing them across devices needs Pro.
