How we grade them
| 3.4GPARaycastVery good | 3.0GPASoulverVery good | |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | BThe free app is the bargain. Pro is $96 a year, or $10 a month, and it's mostly AI plus sync. You can't buy sync without the AI, and the top AI models need the $20 tier. | B$59 once covers Mac, iPad and iPhone, with no subscription. That's on the dear side for a pay-once utility, but major versions are the only paid upgrades and they've averaged seven years apart. iPhone only is $15. Live stocks and Wolfram|Alpha are a separate $26 a year. |
| Free plan and trial | ALauncher, clipboard history, snippets, window management and the whole extension store, all free, even at work. What's held back is AI, sync and notes past the first 5. | CNo free plan. You do get a 60-day trial with no account and no automatic charge, which is a long one. Afterwards your sheets can still be viewed and exported, but making or editing them needs a purchase. |
| Features | AA launcher, clipboard manager, text expander and window manager in one. Add thousands of extensions for Linear, Slack, Notion, Spotify and the rest, or build your own. | AIt reads 190 currencies, more than 200 units, percentages, dates and time zones, and has functions for sales tax, loans and interest. Lines can refer back to earlier answers, and sheets sync through iCloud and export to PDF. For a calculator, that's the lot. |
| Ease of use | BPress a hotkey, type, hit Enter. That bit takes a minute. The rest is hotkeys, aliases and extensions you set up yourself, and some users say version 2 came with bugs. | A4.9 from 431 App Store ratings. You write a sum the way you'd jot it on paper and the answer appears alongside as you type. The trial needs no account, so there's nothing to set up first. |
| Platforms and integrations | BMac, Windows, iPhone and iPad, plus a browser extension. No Android or Linux, and Raycast says the Windows app doesn't have every Mac feature yet. The extension API is a real plus. | CMac, iPad and iPhone, with a Shortcuts action, an Alfred workflow, URL schemes and a free command-line tool. All Apple, though: the site lists no Windows, Android or web version. It needs macOS 14 or iOS 17 or later. |
| Best for | running your computer from the keyboard | working out sums in words on a Mac or iPhone |

Worth knowing
Raycast

- Top-tier AI models need the Plus or Max tier, at $20 or $50 a month.
- The Windows app does not yet have every macOS feature; Raycast says it is still bringing them across.
Soulver
- Apple platforms only: it requires macOS 14, iPadOS 17 or iOS 17 or later, and the site lists no Windows, Android or web version.
- There is no free plan. After the 60-day trial, sheets can still be viewed and exported, but creating and editing them requires a purchase.

Key features
Raycast
- Launcher with hotkeys and aliases
- Open apps, search files and run commands from one keyboard-driven window, and assign hotkeys or aliases to the commands and apps you use most.
- Extension store
- Thousands of extensions for tools such as Linear, Slack, Notion and Spotify. The extension API lets anyone with web development skills build their own.
- Clipboard history, snippets, quicklinks
- Built-in utilities included in the free plan. Free keeps clipboard history for 3 months.
- Window management
- Window management commands are part of the free core features; creating custom window management commands needs Pro.

- Pro adds Quick AI and AI Chat on a monthly credit allowance. A browser extension for Safari, Chrome, Firefox and Chromium browsers passes the active tab to the AI.
- Notes and iOS companion app
- Raycast Notes captures quick thoughts: 5 notes on Free and unlimited on Pro. The iOS app carries AI, notes, snippets and quicklinks; syncing them across devices needs Pro.
Soulver
- Answer column
- A sheet works like a notepad: write words and numbers on a line and the answer appears alongside it as you type, with a floating total for the whole sheet at the bottom.
- Line references, variables and subtotals
- An answer can be referenced on later lines and updates when earlier lines change. Multi-word variables, subtotals and totals of every line carrying a tag are supported.
- Currencies, units and dates
- Recognizes 190 currencies, more than 200 units, percentages, calendar and clock-time math and time zones, with functions for sales tax, loans, interest and inflation.
- Live data
- Pulls live and historical currency and stock prices and weather into a sheet. Access to 150k+ stocks and inline Wolfram|Alpha queries needs the optional data services subscription.
- iCloud sync and export
- Sheets sync through iCloud across Mac, iPad and iPhone with automatic backups. They are plain text and can be exported to PDF, printed or sent as a styled HTML email.
- Automation and command line
- A Shortcuts action, URL schemes, macOS Services and an Alfred workflow connect Soulver to other tools. A free standalone command-line tool can create and edit sheets.
