Value for money
BResearchRabbit+ is $10 a month on the annual plan or $12.50 on the monthly one, about typical. It lifts a search from 50 seed articles to 300 and adds advanced filters, multiple projects and Signals badges. Honestly, the free tier is so full that plenty of people won't need it.
BBasic is $20 a month billed monthly, the dear end of typical for this category. It does include unlimited Assistant queries, full-text search and citation alerts. Patents, clinical trials and grants need Pro at $50. Annual billing is offered, but its price couldn't be confirmed.
Free plan and trial
AFree forever, and properly so: unlimited searches across 310+ million articles, an unlimited library and collections, sharing, and Zotero import. The one real cap is 50 seed articles per search. Most people could stay here for a whole thesis.
DNo free plan is listed. New users get a 7-day free trial, and it rolls into whichever plan you chose at sign-up unless you cancel first. So set a reminder if you're only looking!
Features
BIt does citation chasing fully: similar, earlier and later work from your seed papers, interactive maps of papers and authors, and collections with notes that you can share by public link. It finds papers, and that's the job. Articles without open-access metadata aren't indexed, so some can be missing.
ASmart Citations show whether later papers support, contrast or just mention a finding, with the context around each one. The Assistant links every claim to a sentence, and search runs inside more than 280 million full-text articles under agreements with Wiley, SAGE and 30+ other publishers.
Ease of use
BNo App Store rating on record, so B is as high as we go. Add a few papers you know and follow the trail from there. Your Zotero library comes across with the importer, so you don't start from an empty page.
BNo App Store rating on record, so B is as high as we go. The browser extension does the handy bit: it puts Smart Citation counts beside papers on Google Scholar and PubMed, so you barely change how you search.
Platforms and integrations
BWeb only, with no phone or desktop app on the listing. The Zotero Importer brings in your saved papers, BibTeX files go in and out, and institutions can link it to their library through LibKey.
BA web app and a browser extension, plus a Zotero plugin, an API and an MCP connector that runs Scite inside Claude and ChatGPT. MCP use is capped by credits, at 250 a month on Basic. No phone or desktop app is listed.
