Who each one suits

Voicetypr

  • People who would rather pay once than subscribe to a dictation app
  • Users on both Mac and Windows who want speech transcribed on the device
  • Developers who want a CLI that feeds transcripts to scripts and AI agents

Wispr Flow

  • People who write a lot of email, chat and documents and prefer to speak
  • Developers dictating into a terminal, code editor or AI tool
  • Students and educators, who get 50% off Pro with an education email

Worth knowing

Voicetypr

  • There is no free plan: after the 3-day trial a lifetime license is needed, and each license is capped at 1, 2 or 4 device activations.
  • The Windows installer is not code-signed yet, so the browser and SmartScreen show warnings when it is downloaded and first run.
  • It needs macOS 14 or Windows 10 and later; Intel Macs get a legacy, Whisper-only build, and no mobile or Linux app is listed.
  • Cloud transcription and AI formatting need your own provider keys, and those requests leave the computer.

Wispr Flow

  • Free dictation is capped at 2,000 words a week on desktop and 1,000 a week on mobile.
  • The Notetaker runs on Mac and Windows only; the vendor says mobile is on the roadmap.
  • SAML SSO and org-wide HIPAA enforcement need Growth, and SCIM and audit logs need Enterprise.
  • Growth is listed at a discounted price next to a crossed-out $26 a month (annual); no end date is given.

Key features

Voicetypr

Dictation in any app
A global hotkey records in push-to-talk or tap-to-lock mode and inserts the transcript at the cursor, in apps such as Gmail, Slack, Notion, Word and Cursor.
Local models by default
Whisper runs on the device on macOS and Windows, and Parakeet is added on Apple Silicon Macs. The site lists 99 languages with automatic detection.
Optional cloud transcription
Recordings can instead go to Soniox, OpenAI, Groq, Deepgram or Cohere, which helps on lighter machines. The chosen provider's billing and limits apply.
AI formatting with your own key
Connect an OpenAI, Anthropic or Gemini key, or an OpenAI-compatible endpoint, to clean up rough dictation. Only the text is sent, and there are six formatting modes plus per-app rules.
File transcription and history
Transcribe audio and video files, with speaker diarization on supported cloud providers. A searchable local history compares original and formatted text and can re-transcribe.
Network Sharing and CLI
A second Voicetypr installation on your network can act as the transcription server for a lighter laptop. A command-line tool gives scripts and AI agents text or JSON output.

Wispr Flow

Dictation in any app
Speech-to-text works wherever you can type, including Gmail, Slack, Notion, a terminal or a code editor, in 100+ languages with automatic language detection.
Automatic cleanup
Removes filler words, repetitions and mid-sentence corrections, then adds punctuation and formatting so the output reads like written text.
Personal dictionary
Learns unusual words and names automatically, and you can add your own. Paid plans add a dictionary shared across the team.
Snippets
Store text you type all the time, such as email replies, links, addresses and bios, and reuse it instead of dictating or typing it again.
Notetaker for meetings
On Mac and Windows, the Notetaker captures meetings and voice memos, identifies speakers and answers questions across meetings. Notes can be used in Claude and ChatGPT through MCP.
Security and admin controls
Wispr states SOC 2 Type II, HIPAA and ISO 27001 certification. Growth adds SAML SSO and usage reporting; SCIM and audit logs are on Enterprise.
