Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.6

GPA, above 48 of the 123 other to-do list apps we grade

Actions is a to-do list app from Bonobo in which every task is an Action Card that can carry its own checklist, notes, deadline and reminders. Cards are grouped into color-coded Lists, and a Schedule screen lays out today and the week ahead. It runs on iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and Mac and in a web app, and is sold as a membership through the App Store, either on its own or in the Bonobo Bundle with the Timepage calendar and the Flow notebook app.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Actions, taken from its own pages and our grades.

Siri adds and checks off tasks by voice, and moving a card to another day is a drag across the Schedule.

The report card

Best for a card-based to-do list on Apple devices

Actions turns each task into a card with its own checklist, notes, deadline and reminders, and lays out your day and week on a Schedule screen. One membership at $19.99 a year covers iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Mac and the web. But there's no free plan: after the 7-day trial it goes read-only. There's no Android or Windows app, and typed dates work in English only and not on the Mac.

SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyBThe Annual Membership is $19.99, about $1.67 a month against the $3.99 a typical to-do app charges, and it covers every device. Monthly is $3.99, so take the year. The Bonobo Bundle adds the Timepage calendar and the Flow notebook for $29.99.
Free plan and trialCNo free plan. You get a 7-day trial with every feature and no credit card asked for. After that the app sits in read-only mode, looking at your own lists, until you buy a membership.
FeaturesCCards with checklists, notes, deadlines and reminders, colour-coded lists, a Schedule you rearrange by dragging, a Logbook of what's done, and lists shared by invitation link. The gap the help pages own up to: typing "Pay rent on the 1st of every month" works in English only, and not on the Mac app.
Ease of useB4.64 on the App Store from 9,754 ratings. Siri adds and checks off tasks by voice, and moving a card to another day is a drag across the Schedule.
Platforms and integrationsBiPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and Mac, plus a web app, with Siri, Shortcuts and Bonobo's Timepage calendar. No Android or Windows app is listed, and memberships are bought through Apple's App Store with an Apple ID.
Grade point averageGood, out of 4.02.6

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Actions is for

  • Fits if you're on iPhone, iPad and Mac and want each task as its own card
  • Works for households sharing lists, as the Family Bundle covers up to six people for $49.99 a year

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you want a free plan, because after the 7-day trial it goes read-only without a membership
  • Not for you if you're on Android or Windows, as there's only the web app and you pay through an Apple ID
  • Pricey if you pay monthly, at $3.99 a month against $19.99 for the whole year
  • Watch out: typing dates in plain words works in English only, and the help lists it for iOS and the web, not the Mac
  • Watch out: prices are set by country, so the US App Store figures here may not be what you pay

Good to know

Good for

  • iPhone, iPad and Mac users who want a card-based to-do list
  • People who already use Bonobo's Timepage calendar
  • Households sharing lists under one Family Bundle
  • Typing tasks with dates and repeats in plain English

Worth knowing

  • There is no free plan: after the 7-day trial the app stays in read-only mode without a membership.
  • Memberships are bought through Apple's App Store and billed to an Apple ID. No Android or Windows app is listed, only the web app.
  • Bonobo sets prices by purchasing power parity, so they vary by country. The figures here are from the US App Store.
  • Natural-language entry works in English only, and the help article lists it as supported on iOS and the web.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

The plain part of Actions you could make: tasks and natural-language input. What surrounds it you could not. The 3 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.

It costs $19.99 a year.

What you could make

  • Tasks and natural-language input: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • Apps for macOS and iOS that stay in step with each other.
  • Hooks into the device itself: an Apple Watch app, Siri and Shortcuts.
  • Sharing with other people, which means accounts and invitations.

What this rests on. Actions’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
