Best for midsize firms that set their own workflows

Actionstep is practice management for midsize firms that want matter workflows shaped to each practice area, with time, billing and trust accounting included. But every part is priced by quote plus implementation fees, setup goes through certified partners, the full accounting suite is North America only, and document automation, intake and AI time capture are add-ons.

Who Actionstep is for

  • Fits if you run a midsize firm and want matter workflows built around each practice area
  • Works for firms in the US, UK, Australia, New Zealand or Canada

Who Actionstep is not for

  • Watch out: there are no published prices, and each product and add-on is per user plus implementation fees, by quote
  • Skip it if you want to try it yourself, as there's no trial and setup runs through certified partners
  • Not for you if you're outside North America and want the Legal Accounting suite, which isn't sold there
  • Pricey if you need document automation, intake forms, AI time capture or analytics, as each is an add-on module
  • Watch out: AI workflow automation is listed as coming soon, so it isn't there yet

Why Actionstep gets a 1.8

Five grades, each with its reason. The GPA is their average: an A is 4 points, an F is none.

  • CValue for moneyNo price is published. Actionstep gives a price only on a sales call: each product and add-on is priced per user, plus implementation fees.
  • FFree plan and trialNothing free on record: no free plan and no trial, just a demo or a call with sales.
  • CFeaturesMatters, configurable workflows, calendaring, time capture, billing and trust accounting, with accounting, document automation, intake and AI as extras. The gaps the listing shows: no client portal on record, and the Legal Accounting suite is North America only.
  • CEase of useWe have no store rating on file for it. It's built for midsize firms and set up through Actionstep's certified partners rather than a sign-up, with implementation fees to match.
  • BPlatforms and integrationsWeb, iPhone and Android, with Outlook, Word, Microsoft 365 and Lexidesk. No desktop app, and only four integrations on record.

Each grade against the category

Every bar is all 10 law practice software we grade, cut by the letter each got. Actionstep’s own letter is outlined.

  • CValue for moneyAbove 1 of 9, level with 8
  • FFree plan and trialAbove 0 of 9, level with 3
  • CFeaturesAbove 0 of 9, level with 6
  • CEase of useAbove 0 of 9, level with 8
  • BPlatforms and integrationsAbove 0 of 9, level with 9

Keep Actionstep, or make your own?

Keep it

To replace Actionstep you would be making client trust accounts kept the way bar rules require. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 8 of the 9 other law practice software grade higher.

What you could make

  • Case management, time tracking and invoicing: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • Client trust accounts kept the way bar rules require.
  • Live feeds from your bank, which take an agreement with each bank or a service that has them.
  • Connections to other products, each kept working as those products change.
  • A real app for iOS and Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
  • AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.

What this rests on. Actionstep’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
