Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.6
GPA, above 28 of the 52 other screen recording and video tools we grade
Adobe Premiere, called Premiere Pro until Adobe shortened the name, is a professional video editor for Mac and Windows. It covers timeline editing, color, audio, effects and titles, with AI tools such as Text-Based Editing, Generative Extend and Enhance Speech. The desktop app is sold only by subscription, alone or inside Creative Cloud Pro, while Premiere on mobile is a free standalone app for iOS and Android.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Adobe Premiere, taken from its own pages and our grades.
If you edit a few videos a year, look at DaVinci Resolve's free version.
- 1
Best for pro video editing alongside other Adobe apps
Premiere is Adobe's video editor, covering cutting, color, sound and titles in one app, and the phone app is free with no watermark.
- 2
Paid plans start at $22.99 a month
As its pricing page puts it: US$22.99 per month, on an annual plan billed monthly.
- 3
There is a free plan
Premiere on mobile is a free standalone app for iOS and Android with core editing and unlimited watermark-free 4K exports. The desktop app has no free version, only a seven-day trial.
- 4
It runs on 4 platforms
macOS, Windows, iOS and Android.
- 5
Timeline editing
Three-point editing on a professional timeline, with footage from nearly any camera and export to formats including H.264, HEVC and Apple ProRes.
- 6
Text-Based Editing and captions
AI transcribes footage on import so a rough cut can be built by copying and pasting text. Captions can be translated into 18 languages.
- 7
Generative Extend and Object Mask
Generative Extend uses Firefly to add frames and ambient sound to a clip. Object Mask selects a subject with a click and tracks it.
- 8
A 2.6 GPA, above 28 of 52
That is against the other screen recording and video tools we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 9
Keep it
To replace Adobe Premiere you would be making a video editor. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card
Best for pro video editing alongside other Adobe apps
Premiere is Adobe's video editor, covering cutting, color, sound and titles in one app, and the phone app is free with no watermark. But the desktop app is rental only, at $22.99 a month on a year's commitment, more than twice this category's middle. The trial is 7 days and rolls into a paid plan, it needs Windows 11 or macOS Sonoma, and it takes a while to learn. If you edit a few videos a year, look at DaVinci Resolve's free version.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | D | $22.99 a month, and only if you commit to a year. That's more than twice the $10 middle for video tools here, and you can't buy it outright at any price. DaVinci Resolve has a free version and Apple's Final Cut bundle is $12.99. |
| Free plan and trial | B | The phone app is free: no watermark, unlimited 4K exports and a timeline, though its generative AI costs credits and is iPhone only. The desktop app you actually came for gets 7 days, and that trial needs a card and rolls into a paid plan unless you cancel. |
| Features | A | A full pro timeline with color, audio, effects and multicam, plus rough cuts built by copying and pasting the transcript, and search that finds a clip from a plain-language description. The single-app plan comes with 25 generative credits a month. |
| Ease of use | C | The 4.8 from about 26,000 App Store ratings belongs to the free phone app, not this. The desktop editor is a professional tool with panels everywhere: Adobe's own free workshop for learning it runs two hours, and founders on Hacker News said they kept looking up simple edits. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | Mac and Windows on the desktop, iPhone and Android for the free app, and it's wired into Frame.io, After Effects and Photoshop. No web version and no Linux, so not the full set. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Adobe Premiere is for
- Fits if you already pay for Photoshop or After Effects and move between them
- Works for editors of interviews and podcasts, who can cut by editing the transcript and get client sign-off in Frame.io
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you hate subscriptions: you can't buy it outright, and the $22.99 price needs a year's commitment
- Pricey if you edit a few videos a year, when DaVinci Resolve has a free version and Final Cut's bundle is $12.99
- Not for you if you want to be editing in ten minutes, as there's a lot to learn
- Not for you if you're on Linux, Windows 10 or a Mac older than Sonoma, as the desktop app needs Windows 11 24H2 or macOS 14
- Watch out: the 7-day trial rolls into a paid plan, and the free phone app's AI costs credits and is iPhone only
Good to know
Good for
- Professional editors who also use other Creative Cloud apps
- Teams that review and approve cuts through Frame.io
- Creators who start a social video on a phone and finish it on desktop
Worth knowing
- The desktop app is subscription only; Adobe says it cannot be bought as a perpetual license.
- The US$22.99 price needs an annual commitment billed monthly, and the seven-day trial converts to a paid membership unless cancelled.
- Premiere on mobile is free, but its generative AI features use paid credits and are currently available on iOS only.
- The desktop app requires Windows 11 v24H2 or macOS Sonoma (version 14) or later.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace Adobe Premiere you would be making a video editor. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
It costs $275.88 a year.
What you could make
- Templates: an app builder makes this well.
What you could not
- A video editor.
- Audio cleaned up live as you speak.
- Speech turned into text you can trust.
- Apps for macOS, Windows, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
- It plugs into other products, Frame.io, Adobe Express and Adobe Firefly among them.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
- The depth: we grade its features A, which means it covers the whole job.
What this rests on. Adobe Premiere’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
