Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.8
GPA, above 40 of the 51 other AI agents we grade
Agent Zero is an open-source agent framework that gives an AI agent its own Dockerized Linux computer, with a desktop, a browser, a terminal and document editors it operates while you watch. It keeps memory per project, hands parts of a task to subagents, runs scheduled jobs and is extended with plugins, skills and MCP servers. The software is MIT licensed and free: you install it on your own machine or server and connect a model provider or a local model.
To get you started, here are 8 things to know about Agent Zero, taken from its own pages and our grades.
Docker on a machine you provide, then your own model provider wired in before it does a thing.
- 1
Best for an open-source agent you can watch and take apart
Agent Zero gives an AI agent its own Linux computer inside Docker, with a desktop, a browser and a terminal, and you watch every click it makes.
- 2
It is free
Agent Zero has no paid plan at all. The whole framework is free and open source under the MIT license, with no paid edition or hosted tier. You supply the machine it runs on and your own model access, which the provider bills separately.
- 3
It runs on 4 platforms
Web, macOS, Windows and Linux.
- 4
Linux desktop in a container
The agent gets an XFCE desktop session inside its Docker container, where it runs terminals, file tools and GUI software. You see each action and share the same mouse and keyboard.
- 5
Browser with annotation
A built-in browser opens pages, clicks, types, uploads files and takes screenshots. In Annotate mode you click a page element to have it changed, inspected, copied or commented on.
- 6
Document cowork
A Markdown editor and LibreOffice Writer, Calc and Impress are built into the workspace, so you and the agent edit the same document, spreadsheet or slide deck.
- 7
A 2.8 GPA, above 40 of 51
That is against the other AI agents we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

Keep it
Agent Zero is free, so making your own would save you nothing.

The report card
Best for an open-source agent you can watch and take apart
Agent Zero gives an AI agent its own Linux computer inside Docker, with a desktop, a browser and a terminal, and you watch every click it makes. It's free and open source under MIT. What it costs you is setup: there's no hosted version, no model included, no phone app, and its own LLM API is open only to people who stake its A0T crypto token.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | A | MIT licensed, with no paid edition and no hosted tier waiting to charge you. The bill you can't see is the other one: you bring the machine and your own model account, and that provider charges you separately. |
| Free plan and trial | A | Nothing is held back, because there's no paid plan to hold it back for. The desktop, the browser, memory, the 100-odd plugins, all of it. Point it at Ollama or LM Studio and you're not paying anyone. |
| Features | C | It runs a Linux desktop in a container, and the agent drives a browser, a terminal and LibreOffice in it while you watch. But this is a framework's basics, not a finished platform: no hosted version, no model, nothing on record about scheduled runs or about several people sharing it. |
| Ease of use | D | You host it. Docker on a machine you provide, then your own model provider wired in before it does a thing. The desktop Launcher takes some of the sting out, but it's still setup work, and there's no rating on record. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | The Launcher comes for Mac, Windows and Linux and you work in a web interface, and it talks to MCP servers and to providers like OpenAI, Anthropic and Ollama. No iPhone or Android app is listed, so not the top mark. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Agent Zero is for
- Fits if you're a developer who wants to read and change the agent's prompts and tools
- Works for running on local models through Ollama or LM Studio, with the agent boxed into Docker
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you want to sign up and start, as there's no hosted version to log in to
- Not for you if you expect the model to be included, because you bring your own provider or a local one
- Not for you if you want an agent on your phone, since no iPhone or Android app is listed
- Watch out: the project funds itself through its A0T crypto token, and its beta LLM API is only for people who stake it
- Too light for teams, as nothing on record covers scheduled runs or several people sharing it
Good to know
Good for
- Developers who want an agent whose prompts and tools they can inspect and change
- Keeping an agent sandboxed in Docker instead of running it on the host
- Running on local models through Ollama or LM Studio
Worth knowing
- The site lists no hosted version: you install it with the Launcher, a terminal installer or Docker on a machine you provide.
- Model access is not included. You connect a cloud provider, an AI account such as ChatGPT or GitHub Copilot, or a local model server.
- The Launcher is offered for macOS, Windows and Linux; the installation page lists no iOS or Android app.
- The project funds itself through its A0T crypto token, not paid plans; a beta LLM API with a daily quota is open only to people who stake A0T.

Part 03 · Features
What it does
Its main features, where it runs, what it works with and who makes it
4
Places it runs: Web, macOS, Windows and Linux
Open-source agent framework that works in its own Linux computer. Here is what it does, as its own site describes it, and what it covers: open source, self-hostable, local-first, AI agents.
It runs a Linux desktop in a container, and the agent drives a browser, a terminal and LibreOffice in it while you watch.
- Linux desktop in a container
- The agent gets an XFCE desktop session inside its Docker container, where it runs terminals, file tools and GUI software. You see each action and share the same mouse and keyboard.
- Browser with annotation
- A built-in browser opens pages, clicks, types, uploads files and takes screenshots. In Annotate mode you click a page element to have it changed, inspected, copied or commented on.
- Document cowork
- A Markdown editor and LibreOffice Writer, Calc and Impress are built into the workspace, so you and the agent edit the same document, spreadsheet or slide deck.
- Projects, memory and secrets
- Projects keep files, instructions, memory, secrets, Git repositories and model presets separate per workspace. A Memory Dashboard is used to review and manage what is stored.
- A0 CLI Connector
- An optional command-line bridge lets a sandboxed instance request access to files, a terminal and a Chromium-based browser on your own computer.
- Plugin Hub, MCP and A2A
- More than 100 community plugins install from the Web UI, each scanned for risks first. The agent also connects to MCP servers and Agent-to-Agent flows.

Other AI agents it is graded above
Agent Zero's GPA of 2.8 is higher than 40 of the 51 other AI agents we grade, and level with 6.
It stands best on free plan and trial (A, above 46 of 51) and worst on ease of use (D, above 0).
Agent Zero has no paid plan.
On features, ease of use and platforms it scores 2.0 out of 4. Nothing scores higher for less, though at least one tool matches that score at a lower price.

Price against what you get
Each dot is one of 49 AI agents. Further left costs less; higher up scores better on features, ease of use and platforms. Agent Zero is the marked dot.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
Agent Zero is free, so making your own would save you nothing.
And it is not the kind of software a weekend replaces. It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 2.8 is higher than 40 of the 51 other AI agents we grade.
What you could not
- An AI agent, with the models and the safeguards behind it.
- Apps for macOS, Windows and Linux that stay in step with each other.
- It plugs into other products, OpenRouter, OpenAI and Anthropic among them.
- Sharing with other people, which means accounts and invitations.
What this rests on. Agent Zero’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
