Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

3.0

GPA, above 41 of the 51 other email apps we grade

Mail is Apple's own email app for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and Apple Vision. It reads iCloud, Gmail, Exchange, Yahoo, Outlook and other accounts in one inbox, sorts incoming messages into categories and blocks tracking by senders. The app is free. An iCloud Mail address can also be used in a browser at iCloud.com, and a paid iCloud+ plan adds Hide My Email addresses, custom email domains and more storage.

To get you started, here are 10 things to know about Apple Mail, taken from its own pages and our grades.

If you own anything that isn't Apple, look elsewhere.
From our review of Apple Mail
  1. 1

Best for everyday email if all your devices are Apple

Apple Mail is the free mail app on iPhone, iPad and Mac, and it reads Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo and iCloud accounts in one inbox.

  2. 2

Paid plans start at $0.99 a month

As its pricing page puts it: $0.99 per month (iCloud+ with 50 GB).

  3. 3

    There is a free plan

The Mail app is free on Apple devices and works with iCloud, Gmail, Exchange, Yahoo, Outlook and other accounts. An iCloud Mail address draws on the 5 GB of free iCloud storage.

  4. 4

    It runs on 3 platforms

    iOS, macOS and Web.

  5. 5

    Every account in one inbox

Add iCloud, Gmail, Exchange, Yahoo, Outlook and other accounts, then read them in a single inbox or one mailbox at a time, with filters for unread or flagged messages.

  6. 6

    Automatic categories

Mail sorts incoming messages into Primary, Transactions, Updates and Promotions, which keeps receipts and marketing email out of the main list.

  7. 7

    Priority Messages and summaries

With Apple Intelligence, urgent messages are shown in a section at the top of the inbox, messages and threads can be summarized, and Smart Reply drafts quick responses.

  8. 8

    Refunds: no set window

The Mail app comes with the device; what you pay for is iCloud+ storage, and Apple's policy there is the usual one. The terms say transactions are final and fees paid in advance are not refundable, but you drop the plan yourself in your device's settings, nothing is taken away before the period you paid for runs out, and the account falls back to free 5 GB rather than closing.

  9. 9

    A 3.0 GPA, above 41 of 51

That is against the other email apps we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

  10. 10

    Keep it

To replace Apple Mail you would be making an email client: sending, receiving, threading and searching years of mail. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card

Best for everyday email if all your devices are Apple

Apple Mail is the free mail app on iPhone, iPad and Mac, and it reads Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo and iCloud accounts in one inbox. There's no Windows or Android app, Gmail isn't pushed to the iPhone app, rules live on the Mac only, and an iCloud address stops getting mail once the free 5 GB fills. If you own anything that isn't Apple, look elsewhere.

ToolGPA report cardApple MailGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyAThe app costs nothing, and the only thing to buy is iCloud+ at $0.99 a month for 50 GB, well under the $4 that paid email tools here start at. That throws in throwaway addresses and email at your own domain, shared with up to five other people.
Free plan and trialAFree outright, and it reads Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo and Exchange accounts as well as iCloud ones. The one cap is an iCloud address, whose mail shares the free 5 GB with the rest of your iCloud and stops arriving when that fills.
FeaturesCCategories, snooze, send later, unsend, VIPs and tracker blocking are all built in, and that's the basics, not a deep mail app. The gaps show: rules live on the Mac only, one reviewer says they don't even sync between two Macs, and the AI summaries hang on Apple Intelligence, still a beta.
Ease of useB4.63 from about 4.5 million App Store ratings, short of the top of this category. It's already on your iPhone, iPad and Mac, so there's nothing to download: add your Gmail or Outlook account and the mail turns up.
Platforms and integrationsCiPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and Apple Vision, and that's where it ends. No Windows app, no Android app. An iCloud address can be read at iCloud.com or in Outlook on Windows, but that isn't this app.
Grade point averageVery good, out of 4.03.0

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Apple Mail is for

  • Fits if everything you own is Apple and you want the mail app that's already installed
  • Works for reading Gmail, Yahoo and a work Exchange account in one inbox

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you also use a Windows PC or an Android phone, because there's no app for either
  • Not for you if you need Gmail the second it lands, since commenters say it isn't pushed to the iPhone app
  • Tight if you use an iCloud address on the free 5 GB: it's shared with the rest of iCloud, and mail stops when full
  • Too light for people who live by mail rules, which are Mac only and, one reviewer says, don't sync between Macs
  • Watch out: Mac users on Microsoft 365 connect through EWS, which Microsoft starts switching off in October 2026

Good to know

Good for

  • iPhone, iPad and Mac owners who want a mail app at no cost
  • Reading iCloud, Gmail, Exchange and Yahoo mail in one inbox
  • People who want protection from email tracking built in

Worth knowing

  • The app is listed only for Apple devices. Elsewhere, iCloud Mail is reached in a browser at iCloud.com, which Apple describes for iCloud Mail accounts, or in Outlook on Windows.
  • iCloud Mail counts against iCloud storage, 5 GB on the free tier. When it runs out, the iCloud address stops receiving new mail until space is freed or bought.
  • Hide My Email and Custom Email Domain need iCloud+, and Apple notes that Custom Email Domain is not available in all countries or regions.
  • Priority Messages, summaries and Writing Tools depend on Apple Intelligence, which Apple labels a beta and limits to certain languages and regions.

What people say

  • 4.6on the App Store, from 4,486,353 ratings

What they like

  • Reviewers say it fits in with the rest of their Apple devices, with mail staying in step between iPhone, iPad and Mac.
  • Commenters describe using it as the app in front of mail hosted elsewhere, such as Fastmail or their own domain, since it works with any provider.

What they don’t

  • Commenters with Gmail accounts say new mail is not pushed to it on the iPhone, and some moved to another app or another mail host because of that.
  • Mac users describe rough edges, such as rules and smart mailboxes that misbehave across more than one Mac and search they no longer rely on.

41/51

Other email apps it is graded above

Apple Mail's GPA of 3.0 is higher than 41 of the 51 other email apps we grade, and level with 5.

It stands best on free plan and trial (A, above 42 of 51) and worst on features (C, above 0).

Its paid plans start at $0.99 a month, against a middle price of $4.99 for the category: 0 of the 45 others that charge start lower.

On features, ease of use and platforms it scores 2.3 out of 4. 2 tools score higher and cost less.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

To replace Apple Mail you would be making an email client: sending, receiving, threading and searching years of mail. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 3.0 is higher than 41 of the 51 other email apps we grade. It costs $11.88 a year.

What you could not

  • An email client: sending, receiving, threading and searching years of mail.
  • Filters that read every message as it arrives.
  • Apps for macOS and iOS that stay in step with each other.
  • It plugs into other products, iCloud, Gmail and Microsoft Exchange among them.
  • AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
  • Hooks into the device itself: an Apple Watch app.
  • Sharing with other people, which means accounts and invitations.

What this rests on. Apple Mail’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.

Refunds and cancelling

CGrade

Ordinary · checked Oct 18, 2026

The Mail app comes with the device; what you pay for is iCloud+ storage, and Apple's policy there is the usual one. The terms say transactions are final and fees paid in advance are not refundable, but you drop the plan yourself in your device's settings, nothing is taken away before the period you paid for runs out, and the account falls back to free 5 GB rather than closing. Ordinary, so a C.

Refund window
No set window
How you cancel
Yourself, in settings
Getting your money back

Apple's iCloud terms say any fees paid before you terminate are nonrefundable, including fees paid in advance for the billing year in which you terminate, and the Media Services terms say all transactions are final. The iCloud+ cancellation page adds that partial refunds are available where required by law, and that if you recently changed your plan you can contact Apple within 14 days for a refund.

Stated on apple.com
How to cancel Apple Mail

An iCloud+ plan is cancelled in the device's own settings: on an iPhone with iOS 18.4 or later tap your name, then Subscriptions, then iCloud+ and Cancel Subscription; on a Mac, under Apple Account, then iCloud, then Manage Plan. Choosing the free 5 GB plan is how you cancel. Apple says the change takes effect after the current billing period ends, and points people without an Apple device to a separate route online.

  1. Download or remove anything stored above the storage you will be left with
  2. Open the Settings app and tap your name
  3. Tap Subscriptions, then tap iCloud+ under Active
  4. Tap Cancel Subscription
  5. Read the warning that there may not be enough iCloud storage to sync your data, then follow the prompts
Stated on support.apple.com
What you keep afterwards

Apple says the downgrade takes effect at the end of the billing period, after which iCloud+ features such as Hide My Email and Private Relay stop. If what you store is over the new plan's capacity, iCloud will not sync or update your information and backups will not complete, resuming only when you add storage or delete enough data. The iCloud terms add that Apple may delete data above the limit on 30 days' notice.

Stated on support.apple.com
Renewals

Apple's Media Services terms say subscriptions renew automatically until cancelled in the Manage Subscriptions section of the account settings, and that you are charged no more than 24 hours before the start of the next period. They say you will be notified if the price increases, and that your consent will be required where that is required. No reminder before an ordinary renewal is promised.

Stated on apple.com

In your favour

  • You cancel in your own settings: pick the free 5 GB plan and iCloud+ stops.
  • Nothing ends early. The change lands at the close of the period you already paid for.
  • Apple says it will tell you before a subscription price goes up.
  • Drop the plan and the account stays open on the free 5 GB tier.

Watch out for

  • Apple's terms say transactions are final and fees paid in advance are not refundable.
  • Over the free limit afterwards, iCloud stops syncing and your backups stop completing.
  • The iCloud terms let Apple delete data above your storage limit after 30 days' notice.
  • The 14 days to ask for a refund are tied to a recent plan change, with partial refunds only where the law requires.

Customer support

BGrade

Good · checked Oct 18, 2026

Mail has no support desk of its own, so you get Apple's, and Apple's is better than most: a chat that runs in Messages, a phone line in the countries it lists, a proper user guide for the app and a busy public forum. It falls short of an A because the contact page states no hours and no reply time, and Apple says live support is not offered in every region.

Ways to get help

  • Live chat

The Contact Apple Support page offers a chat with Apple that runs in the Messages app on your device. It covers Apple's products in general rather than Mail on its own.

    Stated on support.apple.com
  • Phone

Apple lists support phone numbers by country or region on its contact page. Where a region is not listed, the page says Apple does not offer live support there, and many numbers only work from inside their own country.

    Stated on support.apple.com
  • Help centre

The Mail User Guide covers the Mac app feature by feature, with a version for each recent release of macOS, and Apple's support site carries separate articles on iCloud+ plans, billing and cancelling.

  • Community or forum

In your favour

  • You can reach Apple live, by chat in Messages or by phone, even on the free plan.
  • The Mail User Guide is detailed and kept up to date with each macOS release.
  • Apple's own articles walk through cancelling iCloud+ and what happens to your storage.

Watch out for

  • No hours and no reply time are stated on the contact page.
  • Live support is not offered everywhere: if your region is not listed, Apple says there is none.
  • Many of the phone numbers only work from inside their own country.
  • There is no queue for Mail or for paying iCloud+ customers: you go through Apple's general support.

What these two grades rest on. Read on 18 October 2026: Apple's article on downgrading or cancelling an iCloud+ plan, the iCloud terms of service, the Apple Media Services terms, the iCloud+ plans and pricing page, the Contact Apple Support page, the Mail User Guide and the Apple Support Community. Mail comes with the device, so the policy read is Apple's account-wide one for iCloud+. Nobody here cancelled a plan or contacted its support. They are graded apart from the five that make the GPA.
