Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.0
GPA, above 5 of the 69 other writing tools we grade
AutoCrit is a web-based platform where fiction and non-fiction authors plan, write and self-edit a manuscript. Its editing reports compare a draft with published books in a chosen genre and flag pacing, dialogue, repetition and word-choice problems, and the Pro membership adds story-level analysis, AI alpha and beta readers, idea generation, book formatting and a private author community. A Free Forever account covers the writing platform and a few of the editing tools.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about AutoCrit, taken from its own pages and our grades.
- 1
Best for self-editing a novel before an editor sees it
The free plan leaves out the reports, monthly plans aren't refundable, and it only runs in a browser.
- 2
Paid plans start at $15 a month
As its pricing page puts it: $15 per month, billed annually.
- 3
There is a free plan
Free Forever: the writing platform with no word limits, digital noteboards and cards, and select editing tools including Adverbs, Word Choice and Readability.
- 4
It runs on Web
Web.
- 5
Line editing reports
More than 25 interactive reports cover pacing, dialogue, strong writing, word choice, repetition and readability, with a spelling and grammar checker.
- 6
Genre comparison
Guided editing compares a manuscript with published work in a chosen fiction or non-fiction genre and gives a summary score to track edits against.
- 7
Story Analyzer+
Reviews a whole book for character arcs, conflict, timeline, contradictory events, foreshadowing and story beats, and can analyze a full series.
- 8
A 2.0 GPA, above 5 of 69
That is against the other writing tools we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 9
Keep it
The plain part of AutoCrit you could make: long-form writing. What surrounds it you could not. The 3 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.

The report card
Best for self-editing a novel before an editor sees it
AutoCrit checks a draft for pacing, dialogue and repetition against published books in your genre, before you pay a human editor, and Pro adds whole-story analysis and book formatting. Pro is $30 a month, or $15 billed yearly, the dear end of this category. The free plan leaves out the reports, monthly plans aren't refundable, and it only runs in a browser.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | D | Pro is $15 a month billed annually and $30 month to month. The dearest tenth of this category starts at $15.00, so even the yearly rate sits in it, and the monthly one is nearly four times the $8.33 middle. The reports, which are the whole point, are all on that plan. |
| Free plan and trial | C | Free Forever has no word limits, noteboards and cards, and a handful of editing tools: Adverbs, Word Choice, Readability. The reports people come for aren't in it. The Summary Report, Story Analyzer+, the reader avatars and formatting all need Pro, so it's a wall you hit on day one. |
| Features | B | More than 25 interactive reports on pacing, dialogue, repetition and word choice, scored against published books in your genre, plus Story Analyzer+ reading a whole book or series for arcs and contradictions, AI alpha and beta readers, Story Builder, and export to EPUB or print PDF. The self-editing job, covered. |
| Ease of use | C | No store rating on record, and it's a browser platform with a bit to it: noteboards and cards to set up, 25-plus reports and a score to learn your way around, and AutoCrit's own advice is to edit on a desktop or laptop rather than a phone. |
| Platforms and integrations | C | Web only. The site works on a phone, but AutoCrit itself says use a desktop or laptop for editing, and the listing shows no apps, no integrations and no API, so there's nothing to connect it to. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who AutoCrit is for
- Fits if you're self-editing a novel before you pay a human editor
- Works for genre fiction writers who want a draft set against published books
Who it is not for
- Pricey if you pay monthly, at $30 against $15 on the yearly plan
- Not for you if you want to edit offline or in an app, as it's a website and nothing else
- Tight if you're staying free, since the Summary Report, Story Analyzer+ and the readers all need Pro
- Watch out: monthly plans aren't refundable, and yearly refunds within 60 days are prorated at $30 a month
- Skip it if you edit on a phone, as AutoCrit itself recommends a desktop or laptop
Good to know
Good for
- Novelists self-editing a draft before paying a human editor

- Monthly subscriptions are not refundable. Annual plans can be refunded within 60 days, prorated at $30 a month.
- The editing reports are algorithmic; generative AI is used only in the optional Inspiration Studio.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
The plain part of AutoCrit you could make: long-form writing. What surrounds it you could not. The 3 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.
That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 59 of the 69 other writing tools grade higher. It costs $180 a year.
What you could make
- Long-form writing: an app builder makes this well.
What you could not
- Grammar checking as you type, wherever you type.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
- The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.
What this rests on. AutoCrit’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
