Worth knowing

AutoCrit

  • The Free Forever account includes only select editing tools; the Summary Report, Story Analyzer+, readers and formatting need Pro.
  • It is web-based only. The site works on phones, but AutoCrit recommends a desktop or laptop for editing.
  • Monthly subscriptions are not refundable. Annual plans can be refunded within 60 days, prorated at $30 a month.
  • The editing reports are algorithmic; generative AI is used only in the optional Inspiration Studio.

Fictionary

  • There is no free plan: after the 7-day trial every plan is a paid subscription.
  • The support FAQ says it works in Safari or Chrome on a laptop or desktop, and that phones and tablets are not supported yet.
  • Manuscripts are imported only as Microsoft Word .docx files, and StoryTeller holds 3 manuscripts at a time unless you move to Premium.
  • Prices here come from an October 8, 2026 archive copy of the pricing page, because the live site showed a bot check.

Key features

AutoCrit

Line editing reports
More than 25 interactive reports cover pacing, dialogue, strong writing, word choice, repetition and readability, with a spelling and grammar checker.
Genre comparison
Guided editing compares a manuscript with published work in a chosen fiction or non-fiction genre and gives a summary score to track edits against.
Story Analyzer+
Reviews a whole book for character arcs, conflict, timeline, contradictory events, foreshadowing and story beats, and can analyze a full series.
Alpha and beta readers
Automated readers give impressions of a draft from a reader's point of view, from 20+ ready-made reader avatars or a custom-built one.
Story Builder and Inspiration Studio
Story Builder holds the premise, world-building, characters and beat sheets. Inspiration Studio uses generative AI to suggest ideas when a story stalls.
Formatting and export
Formatting tools set margins, fonts, trim size and front matter, then export a manuscript to EPUB or a print-ready PDF.

Fictionary

Scene-by-scene story evaluation
A manuscript is assessed one scene at a time for character, plot and setting, covering points such as the scene goal, tension, conflict and point-of-view goals.
Story arc and 15 visualizations
Fifteen visualizations, including an automated Story Arc and a Story Goal Tracker, show where the structure has problems, and a Story Map gives an overview of the whole book.
AI feedback on every scene
A built-in AI writing instructor the company calls Edwina gives immediate, scene-specific feedback as you write or revise.
Genre-based outlining templates
Templates for different genres lay out a story arc to outline against, and the outline stays alongside the manuscript while you write.
Story Editing Journey
A step-by-step editing process tracks progress by scene and by story element, with explanations of terms such as entry hooks on hand as you edit.
StoryCoach for editors
The editor plan adds a client dashboard, editing notes shown beside each scene, track changes and a library of hundreds of prewritten suggestions.
