Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

3.0

GPA, above 107 of the 147 other note-taking apps we grade

Bangle.io is a free, open-source note-taking web app that works on top of Markdown files saved in a local folder of your choice. It gives those files a WYSIWYG editor with folders, backlinks, split-screen views and tabs, and it keeps running offline once loaded. There is no sign-up, and the app can be installed as a Progressive Web App for a desktop-style window.

To get you started, here are 8 things to know about Bangle.io, taken from its own pages and our grades.

No store rating on record, so we go by the listing: open a web page, pick a folder on your computer, start writing.

The report card

Best for editing a folder of Markdown notes in the browser

Bangle.io is a free, open-source web app that edits plain Markdown files in a folder on your own computer, with no sign-up and offline use once it's loaded. It is a browser app and nothing more: no phone or native desktop app, no sync, no built-in backup, and browsers other than Chrome or Edge are steered to the installed PWA.

ToolGPA report cardBangle.ioGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyAFree and open source under AGPL-3.0, with no paid plan at all, in a category whose middle plan is $6 a month. The FAQ says the core product is planned to stay free, with optional paid add-ons only being considered.
Free plan and trialAFree outright, and there isn't even an account to make. Open app.bangle.io or install it as a Progressive Web App and that's the whole product. Nothing is held back, because there's nothing above it.
FeaturesCThe editor shows formatting as you write while the files on disk stay Markdown, with folders, backlinks, split screen and tabs. But the FAQ says there's no sync and no backup built in and points you at git instead, and that's a hole in the middle of what a notes app is for.
Ease of useBNo store rating on record, so we go by the listing: open a web page, pick a folder on your computer, start writing. No account, nothing to configure. It does want Chrome or Edge, mind.
Platforms and integrationsCA web app and nothing else. No native desktop or mobile apps, so nothing on your phone, and the listing names no integrations and no API. Installing it as a PWA is the nearest thing to a desktop app.
Grade point averageVery good, out of 4.03.0

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Bangle.io is for

  • Fits if you already keep Markdown notes in a folder and want a WYSIWYG editor for them
  • Works for trying a notes tool with no sign-up and nothing to install

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you want your notes on your phone, as there's no mobile app and no native desktop app
  • Not for you if you expect sync or backup built in, because the FAQ leaves both to you and suggests git
  • Tight if your browser isn't Chrome or Edge, since other browsers are steered to the installed PWA
  • Watch out: it lists no integrations or API, and the FAQ says paid add-on services may come later to fund development

Good to know

Good for

  • Editing a folder of Markdown notes from the browser
  • Writers who want rich-text editing with Markdown files on disk
  • Trying a notes tool with no sign-up and nothing to install

Worth knowing

  • It works best in browsers with the File System Access API, such as Chrome or Edge; other browsers are steered toward the installed PWA.
  • There are no native desktop or mobile apps. The desktop option is installing the web app as a Progressive Web App.
  • No sync or backup is built in. The FAQ leaves backups to your own routine and recommends git for versioned ones.
  • The FAQ says optional paid add-on services may be considered in future to fund development.
