3.2GPA

Best for editing a folder of Markdown notes in the browser

Bangle.io runs in your browser but saves your notes as plain Markdown files in a folder on your own computer. No sign-up, nothing to install, free and open source, and it carries on working offline once it's loaded. But a browser app is all it is. There's no phone app and no sync, and backups are your job.

Who Bangle.io is for

  • Great if you already keep Markdown notes in a folder and want a nicer editor for them
  • Handy when you want to try a notes tool with no sign-up and nothing to install
  • Good for writers who like rich-text editing but want plain files on disk

Who Bangle.io is not for

  • Skip it if you want your notes on your phone, as there's no mobile app
  • Not for you if you expect sync or backup built in, because both are left to you
  • Tight if your browser isn't Chrome or Edge, since that's where it works best

Why Bangle.io gets a 3.2

Five grades, each with its reason. The GPA is their average: an A is 4 points, an F is none.

  • AValue for moneyFree and open source under AGPL-3.0, with no paid plan. The FAQ says the core product is planned to stay free, though optional paid add-on services may be considered later to fund the work.
  • AFree plan and trialThe whole app is free with no account, at app.bangle.io or installed as a Progressive Web App. Nothing is held back, because there's nothing to upgrade to.
  • BFeaturesA rich-text editor that shows formatting as you write while the files stay Markdown, plus folders, backlinks, split screen and tabs. Good basics. But no sync or backup is built in, and the FAQ points you to git for versions.
  • BEase of useWe have no store rating on record, so a B is as high as we go. You open a web page, pick a folder and start writing. It works best in Chrome or Edge, and other browsers are steered to the installed version.
  • CPlatforms and integrationsIt's a web app and that's it. No native desktop or mobile apps, and the listing shows no integrations. The desktop option is installing the web app as a PWA so it gets its own window.
