Bearable is a symptom, mood and health tracker for iPhone and Android, aimed at people managing chronic conditions or their mental health. Each day you rate mood, energy, sleep and symptoms in a few taps and log factors such as medication, food and activities; reports then show trends and correlations between them. Tracking is free and unlimited, and an optional Premium subscription adds correlation reports, longer report history and unlimited goals and experiments.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Bearable, taken from its own pages and our grades.

The report card

Best for working out what sets off your bad days

Bearable is for people living with a chronic condition or looking after their mental health. Each day you rate mood, energy, sleep and symptoms and log things like medication and food. Tracking is free, but the correlations that show what goes with what need Premium, there's no web version, and staying logged in on two devices can cost you data.

SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyBPremium is $34.99 a year, about $2.92 a month, which lands just inside the cheapest quarter for journaling apps here, and the support site says it's often discounted by up to 76% in the app. No monthly price is published, so you can't price it any other way.
Free plan and trialBFree covers unlimited symptoms, mood, sleep, medication and factors, reminders, widgets and CSV export. The caps bite later, though. Trend reports stop at 30 days and goals and experiments are limited in number.
FeaturesCIt does the symptom-and-mood job fully, with your own scales, factors like food and weather, goals and experiments, and health data read in from your phone. But that's a narrower job than journaling: writing is a note on a day, and the correlations that make sense of it all need Premium.
Ease of useA4.77 from about 6,400 App Store ratings. The daily check-in is a few taps, reminders cover doses and entries, and steps, sleep, heart rate and weight come in from your health apps so there's less to type.
Platforms and integrationsCPhones and tablets only: iPhone and Android, with the support site saying there's no browser or desktop version. It reads from Apple Health, Google Health Connect and Fitbit but never writes back, and it's built for one device at a time.
Grade point averageGood, out of 4.02.8

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Bearable is for

  • Fits if you're tracking a chronic illness, pain, migraines or your mental health
  • Works for bringing a symptom record to a medical appointment

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you want to log from a computer, as it's mobile and tablet only
  • Not for you if you swap between a phone and a tablet all day, since two logged-in devices can lose data
  • Tight if you're staying free and want the correlations, which sit in Premium's Impacts tab
  • Tight if you want reports past 30 days or unlimited goals and experiments, which need Premium
  • Watch out: no monthly price or lifetime purchase is published, and in-app prices run $4.49 to $49.99 with no periods shown

Good to know

Good for

  • People tracking a chronic illness, pain, migraines or mental health
  • Finding which habits, foods or treatments go with better or worse days
  • Bringing a clear symptom record to medical appointments

Worth knowing

  • Built for one device at a time; the vendor warns that staying logged in on two devices can cause data conflicts and data loss.
  • Correlation reports in the Impacts tab, report ranges beyond 30 days and unlimited goals and experiments need Premium.
  • No lifetime purchase is offered, and the site does not publish the price of the monthly subscription.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

You could make this

A journal at its plainest is dated entries of text and photos.

What Bearable does at its core is mood tracking, habit tracking, goals and daily notes, and that is the kind of thing an AI app builder makes well. You would give up one thing, listed below, and little else. It costs $34.99 a year. An AI app builder starts at about $19 a month on our listings, and you only need it while you build.

What you could make

  • Mood tracking, habit tracking, goals and daily notes: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • A real app for iOS and Android. Something home-made would be a web page.

What this rests on. Bearable’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
