Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.0
GPA, above 0 of the 27 other email marketing and newsletter tools we grade
RGE Studio, the Beefree email builder under a new name, is a drag-and-drop tool for designing HTML emails and landing pages, with more than 1,600 templates, brand controls, reviews and approvals. It does not send email: finished designs are pushed to an email platform or CRM such as Salesforce Marketing Cloud, HubSpot or Mailchimp, or exported as HTML.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about RGE Studio, taken from its own pages and our grades.
But it doesn't send anything, so you're paying for that platform as well.
- 1
Best for designing on-brand emails your platform will send
Then it pushes them to HubSpot, Mailchimp or Salesforce.
- 2
Paid plans start at $25 a month
As its pricing page puts it: $25 per month for up to 2 users, billed yearly ($30 billed monthly).
- 3
There is a free plan
Starter plan: up to 10 designs, 6 exports a month, the landing page builder, a custom subdomain, 2 reusable blocks and the last 2 versions of each design.
- 4
It runs on Web
Web.
- 5
Drag-and-drop email builder
Build with rows and content blocks, adjust a mobile layout separately, preview dark mode, and add custom HTML, merge tags and display conditions.
- 6
Templates and landing pages
Start from more than 1,600 email and landing page templates, turn a page into an email and back in one click, and host pages on a custom subdomain.
- 7
Brand controls and synced rows
Set brand colors and fonts once, lock rows such as legal footers, and use synced rows that update in every design when edited.
- 8
A 2.0 GPA, above 0 of 27
That is against the other email marketing and newsletter tools we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 9
Keep it
To replace RGE Studio you would be making a builder that other people can use without writing code. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card
Best for designing on-brand emails your platform will send
RGE Studio, the email builder that used to be Beefree, is for designing good-looking HTML emails and landing pages, with locked brand styles and approvals so a team can't go off-piste. Then it pushes them to HubSpot, Mailchimp or Salesforce. But it doesn't send anything, so you're paying for that platform as well.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | Graded against its own alternatives, since it designs emails rather than sending them. Professional is $25 a month billed yearly ($30 monthly) for 2 users, with extras at $15. That's around Klaviyo's $20 and twice Mailchimp's $13, and you still pay one of them to send. |
| Free plan and trial | C | The free Starter plan has no end date, but it stops at 10 designs and 6 exports a month and keeps only the last 2 versions of each. Fine for the odd project, not a weekly newsletter for long. There's also a 15-day Business trial. |
| Features | D | Next to its alternatives it does one slice of the job, and does it well: drag-and-drop emails, dark mode preview, synced rows, approvals and pre-send checks. But it doesn't send. Lists, sending and automation all stay in a separate email platform. |
| Ease of use | C | No store rating on record. Over 1,600 templates help, but it's a web app where the work is building the email itself, then setting up brand styles and the connection to your sending platform. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | Web only, with one-click export to Salesforce Marketing Cloud, HubSpot, Marketo, Braze, Mailchimp and Klaviyo, plus Canva, or plain HTML. No desktop or phone app, so a B at most. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who RGE Studio is for
- Great if your designers build emails outside the platform that sends them
- Handy when several people design for one brand and footers and colours must stay locked
- Good for teams switching email platforms who want to take their designs along
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you want one tool to design and send, as this one only designs
- Pricey if you need approvals and workspaces, since they start on Business at $134 a month
- Tight if you're staying free, at 10 designs and 6 exports a month
Good to know
Good for
- Marketing teams that design emails outside their sending platform
- Brands and agencies that need approvals and locked brand styles across many designers
- Teams moving between email platforms that want designs they can take along
Worth knowing
- It is an email designer, narrower than the email marketing tools around it: lists, sending and automation stay in a separate email platform or CRM.
- The free Starter plan stops at 10 designs and 6 exports a month and keeps only the last 2 versions of a design.
- Paid plans include 2 users; more cost $15 a month on Professional and $35 on Business, and extra Business workspaces cost $45 a month.
- Beefree renamed this builder RGE Studio and moved it to the Really Good Emails site; Beefree SDK, for embedding the builder in other software, is sold separately.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace RGE Studio you would be making a builder that other people can use without writing code. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 25 of the 27 other email marketing and newsletter tools grade higher. It costs $300 a year.
What you could make
- Templates: an app builder makes this well.
What you could not
- A builder that other people can use without writing code.
- Several people working in it at the same moment.
- It plugs into other products, Salesforce Marketing Cloud, Salesforce Account Engagement and HubSpot among them.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
What this rests on. RGE Studio’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
