Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

3.2

GPA, above 47 of the 51 other email apps we grade

BlueMail is an email client for iOS, Android, macOS, Windows and Linux that connects to Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, iCloud, Exchange and any IMAP or POP3 account. It shows every account in one unified inbox, sorts mail into automatic groups called Clusters, and includes a calendar and PGP encryption. The Personal plan is free with unlimited accounts. The paid Plus plan adds GemAI, which summarizes threads and drafts replies, and Team adds controls for businesses.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about BlueMail, taken from its own pages and our grades.

There's no web version, S/MIME, SSO and MDM are Enterprise only, and the website and the App Store show different prices for Plus.

The report card

Best for one free inbox on every device you own

BlueMail is an email app for iPhone, Android, Mac, Windows and Linux. The free plan takes unlimited accounts into one inbox, and the AI that sums up threads and drafts replies is paid, from $35.99 a year. There's no web version, S/MIME, SSO and MDM are Enterprise only, and the website and the App Store show different prices for Plus.

SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyBPlus is $35.99 a year, which BlueMail shows as $3 a month, inside the lowest-priced quarter for this category, where the middle is $8. That buys unlimited GemAI, desktop backup and priority support. Pay monthly and it's $4.99, and the US App Store shows different in-app figures, $6.99 and $49.99.
Free plan and trialAThe Personal plan is free for good with no cap a normal person would reach: unlimited email accounts, the unified inbox, Clusters, MagicSync and PGP encryption, on every platform. GemAI and desktop email backup are held back for Plus.
FeaturesBIt covers the mail-client job: one inbox for every account, Clusters that group newsletters and receipts, a screener that holds mail from new senders for review, a calendar inside the app that proposes times from a thread, and PGP with your own keys. S/MIME is Enterprise only.
Ease of useBNo app rating on record, and nothing to set up beyond signing in: it takes Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, iCloud, Exchange and any IMAP or POP3 account, as many as you like, on the free plan too.
Platforms and integrationsBiPhone, Android, Mac, Windows and Linux, plus links to Slack, Notion, Linear, Trello, Asana and the big cloud drives. The gap is the browser: no web version is listed.
Grade point averageVery good, out of 4.03.2

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who BlueMail is for

  • Fits if you want the same email app on your phone, your Mac and a Linux machine
  • Works for people with several accounts, since the free plan takes unlimited ones

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you want email in a browser tab, as there's no web version
  • Not for you if you need S/MIME, SSO or MDM support, which are listed on the Enterprise plan only
  • Tight if you were hoping for free AI, because GemAI starts on Plus at $35.99 a year
  • Watch out: the website prices Plus at $4.99 a month or $35.99 a year, but the App Store shows $6.99 and $49.99
  • Watch out: the Plus trial is 7 days, and the FAQ ties it to yearly subscriptions

Good to know

Good for

  • People who want the same email app on phone, Mac, Windows and Linux
  • Individuals looking for a free client with unlimited accounts
  • Keeping newsletters and receipts apart from personal mail

Worth knowing

  • GemAI, email backup on desktop and priority support need the paid Plus plan; S/MIME, SSO and MDM support are listed only on Enterprise.
  • No web version is listed: BlueMail runs as apps for iOS, Android, macOS, Windows and Linux.
  • The pricing page shows yearly prices as a rounded monthly figure ($3 and $8) and switches currency by country; the figures here come from its US price table.
  • The US App Store lists BlueMail+ in-app purchases at $6.99 and $49.99 with no billing period shown; the website prices Plus at $4.99 a month or $35.99 a year.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

To replace BlueMail you would be making an email client: sending, receiving, threading and searching years of mail. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 3.2 is higher than 47 of the 51 other email apps we grade. It costs $35.99 a year.

What you could make

  • Calendar and templates: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • An email client: sending, receiving, threading and searching years of mail.
  • Filters that read every message as it arrives.
  • Apps for macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
  • It plugs into other products, Slack, Notion and Linear among them.
  • End-to-end encryption done properly.
  • AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
  • The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.

What this rests on. BlueMail’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
