Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.4
GPA, above 11 of the 52 other screen recording and video tools we grade
Camtasia is TechSmith's screen recorder and video editor for Windows and Mac, aimed at tutorials, demos and training videos. It records screen, camera and audio on separate tracks and edits them on a timeline with cursor effects, captions and quizzes. The editor is free to use with a watermark; yearly plans remove it and bundle Camtasia Snagit, Camtasia Audiate and, at the top tier, AI avatars and stock assets.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Camtasia, taken from its own pages and our grades.
No store rating on record, and this is a full multitrack timeline editor, so give it an afternoon.
- 1
Best for tutorials and training videos made from screen recordings
Camtasia records your screen, camera and audio on separate tracks, then lets you smooth the cursor, zoom in, add captions and drop in a quiz afterwards.
- 2
Paid plans start at $3.25 a month when paid by the year
As its pricing page puts it: $39 per year, billed yearly (Starter; Editor exports stay watermarked).
- 3
There is a free plan
Camtasia Editor is free to download with every editing feature and no time limit, but exported videos carry a watermark until you buy Essentials, Create, Pro or a Business license.
- 4
It runs on 3 platforms
Windows, macOS and Web.
- 5
Multitrack screen recording
Records the screen, camera, system audio and microphone on separate tracks, at up to 4K, so each one can be edited on its own afterwards.
- 6
Timeline editing with drag-and-drop effects
Non-linear multitrack editing with transitions, callouts, zoom and pan, text animation and custom themes for brand colors and fonts.
- 7
Cursor editing
Cursor data is captured with the recording, so the pointer can be smoothed, enlarged, replaced or given a new path later.
- 8
A 2.4 GPA, above 11 of 52
That is against the other screen recording and video tools we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 9
Keep it
To replace Camtasia you would be making a video editor. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card
Best for tutorials and training videos made from screen recordings
Camtasia records your screen, camera and audio on separate tracks, then lets you smooth the cursor, zoom in, add captions and drop in a quiz afterwards. The editor is free to try with no time limit, but every export is watermarked until you pay, and the $39 Starter plan doesn't remove it. The real price is Essentials at $179.88 a year, billed yearly only, with AI voiceover and avatars on dearer plans.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | Essentials is $179.88 a year, about $15 a month, and it's the first plan with clean exports. That's above this category's $10 middle without being extreme. Starter at $39 keeps the watermark, AI voiceover needs Create at $249 and avatars Pro at $599. |
| Free plan and trial | C | The Editor is free to download with every editing feature and no time limit. But every export carries a watermark until you reach Essentials, so nothing you make with it comes out clean. |
| Features | B | Screen, camera, system audio and mic on separate tracks at 4K, a real timeline with callouts and zoom, a cursor you can smooth or replace afterwards, transcript editing, captions, and quizzes with SCORM for an LMS. The job is covered, as ScreenFlow and Descript cover it. |
| Ease of use | C | No store rating on record, and this is a full multitrack timeline editor, so give it an afternoon. Effects are drag and drop and the cursor can be fixed after the fact, which helps, but it isn't press-record-and-done. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | Desktop apps for Windows 10 or later and macOS 14 or later, plus Camtasia Online in the browser for simple edits only, and it works with ChatGPT, Zoom, YouTube and PowerPoint. No phone app. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Camtasia is for
- Fits if you make tutorials, software demos or training videos from screen recordings
- Works for course designers who need quizzes and SCORM export for an LMS
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you were hoping $39 would do, as Starter still watermarks what the Editor exports
- Pricey if you want AI avatars or audio dubbing, since those are on Pro at $599 a year, and AI voiceover needs Create at $249
- Not for you if you'd rather pay monthly, because individual plans are billed yearly
- Watch out: a license can't be moved to another person, and it covers two devices for the same user
- Tight if you're on macOS 13 or older, as the editor needs macOS 14, and the browser version only does simple edits
Good to know
Good for
- Tutorials, software demos and training videos built from screen recordings
- Instructional designers who need quizzes and SCORM export for an LMS
- Trying the full editor before paying, with watermarked exports
Worth knowing
- The free version and the $39 Starter plan both watermark Editor exports; removing it takes Essentials at $179.88 a year or higher.
- Individual plans are billed yearly, cannot be transferred to another person and cover two devices for the same user.
- Teams of up to 99 buy a separate Business license, priced per user per year, that covers Camtasia Editor and Camtasia Snagit.
- The editor is a desktop app for Windows 10 or later and macOS 14 or later; Camtasia Online, the browser tool, offers simple editing only.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace Camtasia you would be making a video editor. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 25 of the 52 other screen recording and video tools grade higher. It costs $39 a year.
What you could make
- Templates: an app builder makes this well.
What you could not
- A video editor.
- Audio cleaned up live as you speak.
- Recording the screen with its sound, and somewhere to keep the video.
- Speech turned into text you can trust.
- A real app for macOS and Windows. Something home-made would be a web page.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
- The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.
What this rests on. Camtasia’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
