The report card
Best for tutorial videos on a Mac, bought once
Capto is a screen recorder, screenshot tool and editor in one Mac app, $29.99 once from the vendor's web store. It records your screen with voice and camera, cuts and annotates, and uploads to YouTube or Dropbox. There's no free plan, only a 15-day trial that watermarks exports, the Mac App Store edition costs $49.99, and 4K drops to 30 fps with the camera on.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | A | $29.99 once from the vendor's web store, no subscription, against a $10 a month middle for video tools here. You're square inside three months. A Family Pack is $74.99, and the Mac App Store edition wants $49.99 for the same thing. |
| Free plan and trial | C | No free plan. The Mac trial runs 15 days with no card and watermarks everything you export; on Windows you get 7 days. After that it's buy or stop. |
| Features | C | Screen or region recording at 60 FPS with system and mic audio on separate tracks, a camera overlay, an editor that cuts and annotates, whole-web-page screenshots and recording of a connected iPhone. It does record-and-tidy fully, and the listing's own limit is 4K: 60 fps only with the camera off, 30 with it on. |
| Ease of use | B | No store rating on record, but nothing needs setting up: recording, editing and sharing all happen in the one app, and captures land in folders with tags. |
| Platforms and integrations | C | A program for computers only: Mac and Windows, nothing in a browser and no phone app. The Windows version is a separate Microsoft Store app and the web store sells the Mac one alone. It does upload to YouTube, Dropbox, Google Drive and Evernote, and it can record a connected iPhone. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Capto is for
- Fits if you record tutorials or lessons on a Mac with your voice and camera
- Works for recording a connected iPhone or iPad screen through your Mac
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you want something free for good, as the trial ends after 15 days and watermarks exports
- Pricey if you buy it on the Mac App Store, at $49.99 against $29.99 on the web store
- Not for you if you film yourself in 4K, since with the camera on it drops to 30 fps
- Watch out: the Windows version is a separate Microsoft Store app with a 7-day trial, not sold on the web store
- Watch out: the $29.99 web price is a half-price sale that has run past its 12 October end, so it could double without notice
Good to know
Good for
- Tutorial and lesson videos recorded on a Mac with voice and camera
- Buyers who prefer a one-time license to a subscription
- Recording an iPhone or iPad screen through a connected Mac
Worth knowing
- There is no free plan: the Mac trial lasts 15 days and exported videos carry a watermark until a license is bought.
- The Mac App Store edition is unlocked by its own in-app purchase, listed at $49.99 for the Lifetime Pack, against $29.99 on the web store.
- 4K recording runs at 60 fps only with the camera off; with the camera on it drops to 30 fps.
- Capto for Windows is a separate Microsoft Store app with a 7-day trial; the vendor's web store sells the Mac version only.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace Capto you would be making a video editor. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
It costs $29.99, paid once.
What you could not
- A video editor.
- Recording the screen with its sound, and somewhere to keep the video.
- Capture tools hooked into the operating system.
- A real app for macOS and Windows. Something home-made would be a web page.
- It is priced for each person, which means accounts and billing for a team.
- It plugs into other products, YouTube, Dropbox and Google Drive among them.
What this rests on. Capto’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
