Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.0
GPA, above 3 of the 24 other presentation tools we grade
Chronicle is a web-based presentation tool that turns notes, outlines, documents or existing decks into designed slides, which stay fully editable on a freeform canvas. Brand themes and saved templates keep decks consistent across a team, and finished work can be presented, published as a website or exported to PDF or PowerPoint. An API and an MCP server let AI assistants and automation tools generate decks.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Chronicle, taken from its own pages and our grades.
That's a lot to pay for getting your own deck out.
- 1
Best for AI-drafted decks you can still move around by hand
Chronicle turns your notes, a meeting doc or an old deck into designed slides, then leaves every piece free to drag about on a canvas.
- 2
Paid plans start at $12 a month for each person
As its pricing page puts it: $12 per user / month, billed annually.
- 3
There is a free plan
Up to 10 decks, the editing tools, basic preset themes, publishing to the web, PDF and social export, and 3 guest editors. AI features need a paid plan.
- 4
It runs on Web
Web.
- 5
AI deck generation
Pasted notes, outlines, meeting docs or existing decks are turned into a structured presentation. Generating a deck uses about 10 tokens plus 1 per chapter from the plan's monthly allowance.
- 6
Freeform canvas and Muse agent
Generated slides remain editable on a freeform canvas, with control over layout, content, animation and media. From the Plus plan, the Muse agent makes edits from written instructions.
- 7
Brand themes and templates
Brand fonts, colors and visual rules are set once and applied to every deck. Custom themes start at Pro, saving and generating from templates at Plus, and custom fonts at Max.
- 8
A 2.0 GPA, above 3 of 24
That is against the other presentation tools we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

The report card
Best for AI-drafted decks you can still move around by hand
Chronicle turns your notes, a meeting doc or an old deck into designed slides, then leaves every piece free to drag about on a canvas. But the free plan has no AI at all and stops at 10 decks, PowerPoint export waits for Plus at $25 a month, AI tokens are per user and expire monthly, and it's web only. That's a lot to pay for getting your own deck out.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | D | Pro is $12 a user a month billed annually, which looks ordinary beside the $9.99 middle here. The parts you'd want sit higher: the Muse agent, saved templates and PowerPoint export all start at Plus, $25 a user a month, and custom fonts need Max at $45. |
| Free plan and trial | C | Free is 10 decks with the editing tools, basic themes, web publishing, PDF export and 3 guest editors. No AI at all, on a tool whose whole point is AI, so you'll meet the wall early. |
| Features | C | Notes, a meeting doc or an old deck go in and designed slides come out, still free to drag about on a canvas, with brand themes, web publishing and live embeds from Loom, Google Sheets, Calendly and Typeform. Its own listing names the gaps: PowerPoint export waits for Plus, and AI runs on tokens that expire monthly. |
| Ease of use | C | No App Store rating on record, and the job is still building and branding the deck yourself, with a token balance to watch: about 10 tokens a deck plus 1 a chapter. Pasting notes in for a first draft is the easy part. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | Web only, with no desktop or mobile app on its site. It does connect out: a REST API with workspace-scoped keys, an MCP server so Claude or ChatGPT can make a deck, and triggers from Zapier, Make and n8n. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Chronicle is for
- Fits if you're in sales or consulting and turn notes into client decks every week
- Works for automating recurring decks from a CRM through the API or MCP
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you want AI slides for free, as the free plan has no AI features and stops at 10 decks
- Pricey if you need PowerPoint files, because that export starts at Plus, $25 a user a month
- Tight if your team shares AI use unevenly, since tokens are per user and expire every month
- Watch out: saved templates and the Muse agent need Plus, and custom fonts need Max at $45 a user a month
- Not for you if you want a desktop or phone app, as its site lists web only
Good to know
Good for
- Sales, consulting and startup teams turning notes or documents into client-facing decks
- People who want AI-drafted slides they can still rearrange by hand
- Automating recurring decks from a CRM or workflow tool through the API or MCP
Worth knowing
- The Free plan is capped at 10 decks and has no AI features; AI generation needs a paid plan with a monthly token allowance.
- PowerPoint export, saved templates and the Muse agent start at Plus, and custom fonts and advanced branding need Max.
- AI tokens are counted per user, are not shared across a workspace and expire at the end of each month.
- Chronicle is a web app; its site does not list desktop or mobile apps.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
The plain part of Chronicle you could make: templates. What surrounds it you could not. The 4 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.
That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 19 of the 24 other presentation tools grade higher. It costs $144 a year.
What you could make
- Templates: an app builder makes this well.
What you could not
- A slide editor.
- Several people working in it at the same moment.
- It plugs into other products, ChatGPT, Claude and Notion among them, and has an API.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
What this rests on. Chronicle’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
