Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
3.0
GPA, above 39 of the 57 other AI assistants we grade
Claude is Anthropic's AI assistant for writing, analysis, research and coding. It works as a chat on web, desktop and mobile, and can search the web, create files, run code and connect to tools such as Slack and Google Workspace. Paid plans raise the usage limits and add Projects, Research and Claude Code.
To get you started, here are 10 things to know about Claude, taken from its own pages and our grades.
The free plan searches the web, creates files, runs code and keeps memory between chats.
- 1
Best for writing, analysis and coding in one assistant
Claude is Anthropic's assistant for writing, analysis and coding, on web, Mac, Windows, Linux, iPhone and Android.
- 2
Paid plans start at $17 a month
As its pricing page puts it: $17 per month with an annual subscription ($200 billed up front).
- 3
There is a free plan
Chat on web, desktop and mobile, web search, file creation and code execution, memory, app connectors and Artifacts. Usage resets on a rolling five-hour window and is lower than on paid plans.
- 4
It runs on 6 platforms
Web, macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android, with a browser extension too.
- 5
Chat for writing, analysis and code
Write and edit content, generate code and visualize data in a conversation on the web, in desktop apps or on mobile.
- 6
Files, code execution and Artifacts
Claude can create files, run code and present generated content as Artifacts. All three are part of the Free plan.
- 7
Web search and Research
Web search is available on every plan. Research, for longer investigations, is listed with the paid plans.
- 8
Refunds: no set window
Anthropic's line is short: unless the terms or the law say otherwise, payments are not refunded. Cancelling does not get the month back, it only stops the next one.
- 9
A 3.0 GPA, above 39 of 57
That is against the other AI assistants we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 10
Keep it
To replace Claude you would be making an AI model, which you can rent by the request but not make. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card
Best for writing, analysis and coding in one assistant
Claude is Anthropic's assistant for writing, analysis and coding, on web, Mac, Windows, Linux, iPhone and Android. The free plan searches the web, creates files, runs code and keeps memory between chats. But every plan is capped in rolling five-hour sessions, paid plans add weekly limits, the first paid step is Pro at $17 a month billed annually, and payments are generally non-refundable.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | Pro is $17 a month only if you hand over $200 for the year, and $20 if you pay monthly, which is where this category's dearest tenth begins. There's nothing cheaper in between, and even paid plans carry weekly limits. |
| Free plan and trial | C | The free plan has web search, file creation, code execution, memory, connectors and Artifacts. But usage is capped in rolling five-hour sessions with no numbers given, and Research and Claude Code aren't in it. |
| Features | B | Chat for writing, code and data, with files, code execution and Artifacts, web search on every plan, Research for longer digs, memory between chats and Claude Code on the paid plans. No image generation and no voice mode, mind. |
| Ease of use | A | 4.7 from about 273,700 App Store ratings. It's a chat box: type what you need and go. There's nothing to set up unless you want to connect your other apps. |
| Platforms and integrations | A | Web, Mac, Windows, iPhone, Android and a browser extension, plus a Linux desktop app still in beta. It connects to Slack, Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Chrome, VS Code and JetBrains, and there's an API. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Claude is for
- Fits if you want writing, analysis and coding help from one assistant
- Works for developers, as every paid plan includes the Claude Code agent
Who it is not for
- Tight if you work in long bursts, since usage is capped in rolling five-hour sessions on every plan, and paid plans add weekly limits
- Pricey if you wanted a small first step, as nothing sits between Free and Pro at $17 a month billed annually, $20 monthly
- Not for you if you expect easy refunds, because payments are generally non-refundable and listed prices exclude tax
- Watch out: Enterprise bills usage at API rates on top of the seat, and the Max 20x tier has no price on the pricing page
- Skip it if you need image generation or a voice mode, as neither is on record, and the Linux app is still in beta
Good to know
Good for
- Writing, analysis and coding help in one assistant
- Developers who want a coding agent included in their subscription
- Teams of 2 to 150 that need SSO and central billing
Worth knowing

- Projects, Research, Claude Code and the Chrome and Microsoft 365 extensions are not in the Free plan.
- Enterprise bills usage at API rates on top of the seat price, and the Max 20x tier has no price on the pricing page.
- Payments are generally non-refundable, listed prices exclude tax, and the Linux desktop app is in beta.

39/57
Other AI assistants it is graded above
Claude's GPA of 3.0 is higher than 39 of the 57 other AI assistants we grade, and level with 8.
It stands best on platforms and integrations (A, above 45 of 57) and worst on value for money (C, above 5).
Its paid plans start at $17 a month, against a middle price of $10 for the category: 32 of the 38 others that charge start lower.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace Claude you would be making an AI model, which you can rent by the request but not make. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 3.0 is higher than 39 of the 57 other AI assistants we grade. It costs $204 a year.
What you could not
- An AI model, which you can rent by the request but not make.
- A search engine with an AI model behind it.
- Apps for macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
- It plugs into other products, Slack, Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 among them, and has an API.
- The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.
What this rests on. Claude’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
Part 05 · Refunds
After you pay
Getting your money back, getting out, and getting help
What happens once you have paid: whether you can get your money back, how to leave, and how to reach a person when something goes wrong. Each is graded from Claude’s own terms and help pages.
Refunds and cancelling
Ordinary · checked Oct 18, 2026
Anthropic's line is short: unless the terms or the law say otherwise, payments are not refunded. Cancelling does not get the month back, it only stops the next one. What you do get is a tidy exit, two clicks in Settings, with the paid plan running to the end of the period you bought. No refunds and an easy door is the ordinary deal for a subscription, so it is a C.
- Refund window
- No set window
- How you cancel
- Yourself, in settings
- Getting your money back
Except where the consumer terms or the law provide otherwise, all payments are non-refundable, and the help article on refunds repeats it. Where a payment is refundable, you ask through the support messenger under Claude Refund Request, which checks your eligibility. Customers in the EEA and the UK can get a refund within 14 days of purchase, prorated to use. App Store purchases are Apple's to refund.
Stated on support.claude.com- How to cancel Claude
A Pro or Max plan bought on the web or in the desktop app is cancelled from Settings, then Billing. One bought in the iOS or Android app is handled by that store, reached through Billing and then Manage subscription inside the app. Cancel at least 24 hours before the next billing date to avoid the next charge.
- Log in to Claude on the web or open the desktop app
- Click your initials or name in the lower left corner
- Select Settings
- Go to Billing
- Click Cancel
- What you keep afterwards
Cancelling takes effect at the end of the current billing period, and the paid plan keeps working until then. Monthly API credits included with Max and Team plans stop being issued, though credits already claimed stay usable until they expire and are never refunded. The consumer terms add that Anthropic may delete the materials and data on an account when a subscription or access ends.
Stated on support.claude.com- Renewals
The consumer terms say a paid subscription renews automatically for another term the same length as the last, charged up front, until you cancel. Fees will not change during a term, and any increase comes with at least 30 days' notice, taking effect at the next renewal so you can leave first. No reminder before an ordinary renewal is mentioned.
Stated on anthropic.com
In your favour
- Cancelling a web plan is five clicks in Settings, with nobody to write to and no questions asked.
- You keep the paid plan to the end of the period you already paid for.
- A price rise comes with at least 30 days' warning and takes effect only at the next renewal.
- Upgrade from Pro or Max to Team and the old plan is refunded pro rata without you asking.
Watch out for
- Payments are non-refundable as a rule. Regretting the month does not get it back.
- Cancel at least 24 hours before the billing date or the next charge will already have gone.
- Subscribed in the iPhone app? Only Apple can refund it, and it decides at its own discretion.
- Dispute a charge with your bank and support cannot refund you until the dispute is dropped.
Customer support
Ordinary · checked Oct 18, 2026
Anthropic says it plainly: support is in writing, through the messenger and by email, and there is no phone line and no live chat. An AI bot called Fin takes the first pass and hands you to the Product Support team when it cannot help. The help centre is big and well organised. What is missing is any promise about timing, beyond the admission that it varies by plan. A written route with no stated hours or reply time is a C.
Ways to get help
Email
Every reply is also emailed to the address on your account, and replying to that email continues the same conversation, so you can close the messenger. The consumer terms also give a support address for cancelling.
Stated on support.claude.comContact form or ticket
A support messenger opened from Get help. Fin, an AI bot, answers first and takes the details; where more is needed it passes the case to the Product Support team, who reply in the same conversation.
Stated on support.claude.comHelp inside the app
Get help sits in the account menu in Claude itself, in the desktop app and in the Console, and the same messenger opens from an icon on any help centre page once you are signed in.
Stated on support.claude.comHelp centre
A large help centre split into collections for the Pro and Max plans, Team and Enterprise, Claude Code, the desktop and mobile apps, the API and Console, privacy and more, readable without signing in.
Stated on support.claude.com
Not listed on Claude’s pages: live chat, phone.
- When people answer
Its pages do not say.
- How fast it says it replies
Anthropic says support is asynchronous: once a request reaches the team a specialist investigates and replies in the same conversation, and that response times vary by plan and by how severe the issue is. No target in hours or days is given for any plan.
Stated on support.claude.com- What depends on your plan
Pro and Max subscribers, Team and Enterprise owners and Console admins get the help centre, Fin and the Product Support team. Team non-owners and Console non-admins get Fin only, and must ask an owner to escalate on their behalf. Enterprise owners can nominate support contacts who may reach a human without holding an owner role.
Stated on support.claude.com
In your favour
- Pro and Max subscribers reach the human support team, not just the bot.
- Replies land in your email as well as the messenger, so nothing is trapped in a chat window.
- Asking for a refund is a built-in option in the messenger, not a letter you have to compose.
- The help centre is large and specific, with its own collections for billing, cancelling and refunds.
Watch out for
- No phone support and no live chat. Anthropic states both plainly.
- A bot takes the first pass and decides whether your question reaches a person.
- No hours and no reply time are published. Anthropic only says times vary by plan.
- On a Team plan, ordinary members cannot escalate to a human. An owner has to do it for them.
What these two grades rest on. Read on 18 October 2026: Anthropic's consumer terms of service and the Claude help centre's articles on cancelling a Pro or Max subscription, requesting a refund, paid plan billing and how to get support, plus the help centre's own front page. Nobody here cancelled a plan or contacted its support. They are graded apart from the five that make the GPA. How we grade refunds and support.
