Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.2

GPA, above 9 of the 51 other email apps we grade

Clean Email is an inbox cleaning service that connects to an existing mailbox and works alongside whatever email app you already use. It groups messages so that thousands can be deleted, archived or labelled at once, unsubscribes from mailing lists, screens unknown senders and applies Auto Clean rules to new mail. It works with Gmail, iCloud, Yahoo, Outlook, AOL, Fastmail and other IMAP accounts. Paid plans include every feature and differ only in how many email accounts they cover.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Clean Email, taken from its own pages and our grades.

It works alongside whatever email app you already use, and Cleaning Suggestions point you at the mail people usually bin first.

The report card

Best for clearing thousands of old emails in one go

Clean Email isn't a mail app. It plugs into the mailbox you already have and clears it out: delete thousands of messages at once, unsubscribe from mailing lists, and set rules for new mail. One account is $9.99 a month, or $29.99 for the year. The free account stops at 1,000 emails, the Screener, Auto Clean and Unsubscriber are paid, there's no Windows app, and the 5-account plan's price isn't clear.

ToolGPA report cardClean EmailGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyCOne account is $9.99 a month, a little over this category's $8 middle and above the $4 of its lowest-priced quarter. A year up front is $29.99, about what three months cost paid monthly. Every plan carries every feature, and ten accounts are $99.99 a year with the spares shareable.
Free plan and trialCA free account cleans 1,000 emails, plus 100 a week with Cleanup Reminders on, and for a tool whose whole purpose is clearing thousands that cap arrives in one sitting. The 14-day Premium trial needs no card and includes 25 unsubscribe actions.
FeaturesCGroup mail by sender, date or size and delete thousands at once, with an Unsubscriber, a Screener for unknown senders, Auto Clean rules and a Privacy Monitor watching for breaches. It does that fully and it's a small job: it cleans the mailbox you have and is no sort of mail app.
Ease of useC4.46 from about 3,800 App Store ratings, under the 4.5 a B needs. It works alongside whatever email app you already use, and Cleaning Suggestions point you at the mail people usually bin first.
Platforms and integrationsBWeb, iPhone, Mac and Android, connected to Gmail, iCloud, Yahoo, Outlook, AOL, Fastmail and other IMAP accounts. No Windows app is listed, so on a PC it's the web version.
Grade point averageFair, out of 4.02.2

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Clean Email is for

  • Fits if you've got thousands of old emails to delete or archive in one sitting
  • Works for families, since the 5 and 10 account plans let you share the spare accounts

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you want a new email app, because it only cleans the mailbox you already have
  • Tight if you're staying free, as that stops at 1,000 emails plus 100 a week, with no Screener, Auto Clean or Unsubscriber
  • Pricey if you pay month by month, at $9.99 against $29.99 for the whole year
  • Watch out: there's no Windows app, so on a PC you use the web version
  • Watch out: the 5-account plan shows several App Store prices with no billing period, and the plans page varies by region

Good to know

Good for

  • Clearing a backlog of thousands of old emails
  • Unsubscribing from many mailing lists in one sitting
  • Families or small groups sharing a 5 or 10 account plan

Worth knowing

  • A free account can clean 1,000 emails, plus 100 a week with reminders on. Screener, Auto Clean and the Unsubscriber need a paid plan.
  • It is not an email client: it connects to your mailbox and works alongside the email app you already use.
  • Prices here are US prices from the App Store listings and Clean Email's own pages. Its plans page shows local-currency prices that vary by region.
  • The US App Store lists 5-account purchases at several prices without a billing period, so that plan's price is given as a range.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

To replace Clean Email you would be making connections to other products, each kept working as those products change. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 33 of the 51 other email apps grade higher. It costs $29.99 a year.

What you could not

  • Connections to other products, each kept working as those products change.
  • Filters that read every message as it arrives.
  • Apps for macOS, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.

What this rests on. Clean Email’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
