Who each one suits

Clean Email

  • Clearing a backlog of thousands of old emails
  • Unsubscribing from many mailing lists in one sitting
  • Families or small groups sharing a 5 or 10 account plan

Inbox Zero

  • Gmail and Outlook users who want mail sorted and replies drafted for them
  • Teams that prefer open source software they can inspect or self-host
  • Clearing newsletters and cold outreach out of a crowded inbox

Worth knowing

Clean Email

  • A free account can clean 1,000 emails, plus 100 a week with reminders on. Screener, Auto Clean and the Unsubscriber need a paid plan.
  • It is not an email client: it connects to your mailbox and works alongside the email app you already use.
  • Prices here are US prices from the App Store listings and Clean Email's own pages. Its plans page shows local-currency prices that vary by region.
  • The US App Store lists 5-account purchases at several prices without a billing period, so that plan's price is given as a range.

Inbox Zero

  • There is no free plan for the hosted service: every plan starts with a 7-day trial that needs a credit card.
  • It supports Gmail, Google Workspace and Microsoft Outlook accounts only.
  • The AI meeting notetaker, Slack and app integrations, email digests and auto-filed attachments start at Plus.
  • The free Inbox Zero Tabs browser extension works with Gmail only, and the mobile apps leave some settings to the web app.

Key features

Clean Email

Unsubscriber
Lists every subscription and newsletter in one place and unsubscribes for you. If a list ignores the request, its messages are moved to the trash automatically.
Bulk cleaning
Groups mail by sender, date or size so that thousands of messages can be deleted, archived, labelled or moved in a single action.
Smart Folders and Cleaning Suggestions
Predefined filters gather mail such as social notifications, rideshare receipts and online shopping, and suggestions point to messages people usually delete or archive.
Screener
Holds messages from senders who have never emailed you before, so you can allow or block each one before it reaches the inbox.
Auto Clean rules
Rules based on sender, domain, status or age automatically move, star, mark, delete or archive messages as they arrive or once they get old.
Privacy Monitor
Checks your email address against known data breaches on a regular basis and alerts you if it has been compromised.

Inbox Zero

AI labels and plain-English rules
Incoming mail is sorted into categories such as To Reply, Newsletter, Marketing and Cold Email. You can add categories of your own and describe in plain English how the assistant should handle mail.
Pre-drafted replies
Emails that need a response get a draft written in your tone, based on your email history and calendar, waiting in the inbox for you to review and send.
Bulk unsubscribe and archive
Shows which senders you never read so you can unsubscribe from and archive them in one click. A cold email blocker and email analytics are part of every plan.
Optional email client
A keyboard-first client for Gmail and Outlook on web, desktop and iPhone, with a split inbox, a command palette, several accounts in one inbox and team comments that are never sent as email.
Chat from Slack and Telegram
The assistant can be reached from Slack or Telegram to read mail, draft replies and manage the inbox. The pricing page lists the Slack integration from the Plus plan.
Open source and self-hosting
The code is public on GitHub, with the web and desktop email client under the AGPL license. The docs cover self-hosting with Docker, on Vercel, AWS or Kubernetes.
