The report card
Best for free video editing in a browser or on Windows
Clipchamp is Microsoft's video editor, with a timeline, a screen and camera recorder, AI subtitles and voiceovers, and unlimited 1080p exports with no watermark on the free plan. Premium isn't sold on its own, so 4K export and the brand kit come only with Microsoft 365 from $9.99 a month. The browser editor runs in Edge and Chrome only, there's no Mac app, and the iOS app ended in June 2026.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | Premium only comes with Microsoft 365 Personal at $9.99 a month, dead on this category's middle. You can't buy Clipchamp premium by itself, so if all you wanted was 4K export you're paying for the whole Office suite to get it. |
| Free plan and trial | A | Unlimited exports at 1080p with no watermark, plus the editing tools, the screen and camera recorder, AI subtitles, voiceovers and silence removal. There's no cap a normal person runs into; what's held back is 4K, premium stock and the brand kit. |
| Features | B | A timeline with text, filters and colour correction, a screen, camera and voice recorder, subtitles in over 80 languages, text to speech with over 400 voices, noise and filler-word cleanup, templates and stock. The editing job is covered, as CapCut and Veed cover it. |
| Ease of use | C | No store rating on record. You sign in with a Microsoft account, and then the work is building the video on a timeline yourself. It helps that on Windows 11 it's already in the Start menu and there are templates to start from. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | The browser editor, in Edge and Chrome only, plus a Windows app, tied into OneDrive and Microsoft 365. No Mac app, and Microsoft ended the iOS app on 9 June 2026, so nothing on a phone or iPad. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Clipchamp is for
- Fits if you're on Windows 11, where it's in the Start menu already
- Works for anyone who wants 1080p exports with no watermark and nothing to pay
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you edit on your phone or an iPad, as the iOS app has ended and the browser editor isn't built for touch
- Pricey if 4K export is all you're after, since it only comes with Microsoft 365 from $9.99 a month
- Not for you if you use Safari or Firefox, because the browser editor works in Edge and Chrome
- Skip it if you want a Mac app, as there's only the browser editor and a Windows app
- Watch out: work and school accounts get a separate Clipchamp for work, tied to some business licenses
Good to know
Good for
- Windows users, who find it in the Start menu on Windows 11
- Free 1080p exports without a watermark
- Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscribers who want 4K export
Worth knowing
- Premium is not sold on its own: 4K export, premium stock assets and effects, and the brand kit come with Microsoft 365 Personal or Family.
- The browser editor works in Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome, and is not optimized for touch devices such as iPads or tablets.
- Microsoft ended support for the Clipchamp iOS app on June 9, 2026, leaving the browser editor and the Windows desktop app.
- Work and school accounts use a separate Clipchamp for work version, included with some Microsoft 365 business and education licenses.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace Clipchamp you would be making a video editor. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 2.8 is higher than 38 of the 52 other screen recording and video tools we grade. It costs $99.99 a year.
What you could make
- Templates: an app builder makes this well.
What you could not
- A video editor.
- Audio cleaned up live as you speak.
- Recording the screen with its sound, and somewhere to keep the video.
- Speech turned into text you can trust.
- A real app for Windows. Something home-made would be a web page.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
- The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.
What this rests on. Clipchamp’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
