Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.4

GPA, above 6 of the 30 other whiteboard and mind map tools we grade

Coggle is a browser-based tool for collaborative mind maps and flowcharts from CoggleIt Limited, based in Cambridge, England. Diagrams branch out from one or more central topics, several people can edit at once, and every change is kept in a history that a copy can be made from. The free plan allows three private diagrams and unlimited public ones, and the Awesome plan removes the private limit and adds more shapes and line controls.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Coggle, taken from its own pages and our grades.

There are no templates on offer to start you off.

The report card

Best for quick mind maps a group can edit together

Coggle is a mind mapper that runs in your browser, where several people can edit the same map at once and every change is kept. The free plan makes only 3 diagrams private, so everything after that is public. There are no desktop or phone apps. Extra shapes, line controls and attachments need the $5 Awesome plan, and on-premise use has no public price.

ToolGPA report cardCoggleGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyBAwesome is $5 a month, in the lower part of this category, where the middle is nearer $8.33. It lifts the cap on private diagrams and adds more shapes, line controls and attachments. Organisation is $8 a member a month, and the homepage lists monthly prices only.
Free plan and trialCFree Forever has real-time collaboration, the full change history, unlimited image uploads and PDF, image and Visio export. But only 3 diagrams can be private, so everything after that is public. That's a wall most people meet.
FeaturesCIt covers mind maps, which is a smaller job than this category's: branching from several centers, loops, auto-arrange, 1,600 icons, Markdown in the text and a full history to copy from. Simple flowcharts too, though more shapes, line styles and attachments all need Awesome.
Ease of useCNo rating on record. Nothing to install, which helps, but a blank browser canvas is still a thing you have to build: branch out from the middle, arrange it, invite people by email. There are no templates on offer to start you off.
Platforms and integrationsBA web app, and only a web app: no desktop or mobile apps are listed, and on a phone you save the site to your home screen. It does have a public API, and Organisation adds SAML sign-on with Okta or OneLogin.
Grade point averageFair, out of 4.02.4

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Coggle is for

  • Fits if a group wants to build one mind map together, each in their own browser
  • Works for the odd map on the free plan, if your diagrams can be public

Who it is not for

  • Tight if you're staying free and want things private, with only 3 private diagrams
  • Skip it if you want an app on your phone or desktop, as none is listed; phones get a home-screen web app
  • Too light for detailed flowcharts, where the extra shapes and line controls cost $5 a month
  • Watch out: the homepage lists monthly prices only, and SAML sign-on is on Organisation at $8 a member
  • Not for you if you want to start from templates, as none are on offer

Good to know

Good for

  • Students and teams making quick collaborative mind maps
  • Simple flowcharts and process maps alongside mind maps
  • Occasional users who are fine with public diagrams on the free plan
  • Companies that need SAML sign-on or an on-premise instance

Worth knowing

  • The free plan allows only 3 private diagrams; other diagrams made on it are public.
  • More item shapes, line style and path controls, file attachments and high-res image uploads need the Awesome plan.
  • No native desktop or mobile apps are listed; on a phone Coggle is saved to the home screen as a progressive web app.
  • The homepage lists only monthly prices, and on-premise instances are arranged through Coggle for Enterprise without a public price.

6/30

Other whiteboard and mind map tools it is graded above

Coggle's GPA of 2.4 is higher than 6 of the 30 other whiteboard and mind map tools we grade, and level with 6.

It stands best on value for money (B, above 19 of 30) and worst on features (C, above 0).

Its paid plans start at $5 a month, against a middle price of $8.29 for the category: 4 of the 23 others that charge start lower.

On features, ease of use and platforms it scores 2.3 out of 4. 6 tools score higher and cost less.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

The plain part of Coggle you could make: mind mapping and Markdown. What surrounds it you could not. The 3 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.

That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 18 of the 30 other whiteboard and mind map tools grade higher. It costs $60 a year.

What you could make

  • Mind mapping and Markdown: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • A diagram editor.
  • Several people working in it at the same moment.
  • It plugs into other products, Okta and OneLogin among them, and has an API.

What this rests on. Coggle’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
