Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

3.0

GPA, above 22 of the 36 other read-later and bookmark apps we grade

Cubox is a read-later app from Zenbox Inc. that saves articles, newsletters and web pages into a private library, parses them into a clean reading view and keeps a snapshot of each page. Readers can highlight and annotate, organize with nested folders and tags, and use AI to summarize an article or ask questions across everything they have saved. A basic account is free, and the Pro and Pro+AI memberships are sold on the web as annual plans.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Cubox, taken from its own pages and our grades.

  1. 1

Best for read-later with snapshots and AI summaries

Cubox is a read-later app that keeps a clean copy and a snapshot of what you save, with highlights, and on Pro+AI at $49 a year answers questions from your library.

  2. 2

Paid plans start at $2.42 a month when paid by the year

As its pricing page puts it: $29 per year (Cubox Pro, annual plan).

  3. 3

    There is a free plan

A basic account is free but has a quota on saved content, which the vendor pages read do not put a number on. Unlimited saves and highlights, snapshots, nested folders, Email Drop and the API need Pro.

  4. 4

    It runs on 4 platforms

Web, macOS, iOS and Android, with a browser extension too.

  5. 5

    Saving from many places

Browser extensions for Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox, the share sheet on iPhone, iPad and Android, a Mac helper, Email Drop and an API all save content into one library.

  6. 6

    Article parsing and snapshots

Saved pages are parsed into a clean reading view with adjustable themes and fonts, and a permanent snapshot keeps the page readable if the original link dies. Snapshots are for Pro members.

  7. 7

    Highlights and annotations

Highlight passages and add notes while reading, then review them later through widgets and reminders. Multiple highlight colors are part of the Pro plans.

  8. 8

    A 3.0 GPA, above 22 of 36

That is against the other read-later and bookmark apps we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

  9. 9

    Keep it

The plain part of Cubox you could make: read later, highlights, bookmarks and web clipper. What surrounds it you could not. The 5 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.

The report card

Best for read-later with snapshots and AI summaries

Cubox is a read-later app that keeps a clean copy and a snapshot of what you save, with highlights, and on Pro+AI at $49 a year answers questions from your library. Pro is $29 a year. The free account has a cap on saves that Cubox's pages don't put a number on, the web sells annual plans only, the trial wants a payment method, and Windows and Linux get only the web app.

ToolGPA report cardCuboxGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyBPro is $29 a year, which is $2.42 a month and lands exactly on the line for the cheapest quarter of reading apps here, for unlimited saves and highlights, snapshots, nested folders, Email Drop and the API. Pro+AI is $49, and the FAQ says you keep renewing at the price you first paid.
Free plan and trialCThere's a free account, but with a cap on saves that neither the pricing page nor the help center puts a number on, so you can't plan around it. Snapshots, nested folders and the API are Pro, and the 14-day Pro+AI trial wants a payment method linked first.
FeaturesBIt covers the whole job: saving from extensions, share sheets, email and an API, pages parsed into a clean view, a snapshot kept in case the link dies, highlights and notes, nested and smart folders, full-text search, export as Markdown, HTML or PDF, and AI summaries on the paid plans.
Ease of useBNo store rating on record, but there's nothing to build here: install the app or the extension, save a page, and it arrives already cleaned up for reading, with themes and fonts to suit you.
Platforms and integrationsAThe full set: web, Mac, iPhone, iPad, Android and extensions for Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox, plus an API and syncing out to Notion, Readwise and Obsidian. Windows and Linux get the web app rather than their own.
Grade point averageVery good, out of 4.03.0

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Cubox is for

  • Fits if you save articles, newsletters and web pages to read and mark up later
  • Works for people who send their highlights on to Obsidian, Notion or Readwise

Who it is not for

  • Tight if you're staying free, as the basic account has a save quota Cubox doesn't put a number on
  • Not for you if you want to pay monthly on the web, where only annual plans are sold
  • Skip it if you want a desktop app on Windows or Linux, since it runs as a web app there
  • Watch out: the 14-day Pro+AI trial needs a payment method linked first
  • Pricey if you want automatic AI summaries, which need Pro+AI at $49 a year, and AI use has limits even there

Good to know

Good for

  • Readers who save articles, newsletters and web pages to annotate later
  • People who want AI summaries and answers drawn from their own saved library
  • Users who send highlights on to Obsidian, Notion or Readwise

Worth knowing

  • The free basic account has a quota on saved content, and the vendor pages read do not say how large it is.
  • The web pricing page offers annual plans only: Pro at $29 a year and Pro+AI at $49 a year. The US App Store listing also shows monthly in-app purchases.
  • AI Insight and Ask AI need a paid membership and have usage limits; automatic insight is reserved for Pro+AI.
  • The download page lists Mac, iPhone, iPad, Android and browser extensions; on Windows and Linux Cubox runs as a web app.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

The plain part of Cubox you could make: read later, highlights, bookmarks and web clipper. What surrounds it you could not. The 5 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.

It costs $29 a year.

What you could make

  • Read later, highlights, bookmarks and web clipper: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • Apps for macOS, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
  • It plugs into other products, Obsidian, Notion and Readwise among them, and has an API.
  • AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
  • Hooks into the device itself: widgets.
  • The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.

What this rests on. Cubox’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
