How we grade them

Value for money
APro is $29 a year for unlimited saves and highlights, snapshots, nested folders, Email Drop and the API. That's well under most read-later apps. Pro+AI is $49 a year, and Cubox's FAQ says you keep renewing it at the price you first paid.
BOn the US App Store it's $7.99 a month or $59.99 a year, which is about typical by the year and the dear end by the month. But the App Store lists several Premium and Pro prices, up to $79.99 a year, and the website has no pricing page. Hard to know what you'll be shown.
Free plan and trial
BThe basic account is free, but it has a quota on saved content, and Cubox's pricing page and help centre don't say how big it is. Snapshots, nested folders and the API are Pro. The 14-day Pro+AI trial wants a payment method linked first.
AThe free version has an uncapped library, saving from the phone and browser extensions, unlimited tags, full-text search and custom themes and fonts. Most people could stay on that. Newsletter sync, RSS feeds, HD speech and unlimited highlights are the paid bits.
Features
AIt saves from browser extensions, share sheets, email and an API, turns pages into a clean reading view and keeps a snapshot in case the link dies. Then there are highlights, notes, full-text search, and export as Markdown, HTML or PDF. The AI summaries and Ask AI sit on the paid plans.
AArticles, PDFs and threads in a clean view you can read offline. YouTube videos and podcast episodes get transcripts that stay in sync with playback. Text to speech, highlights that sync to Notion, Obsidian, Roam and Readwise, and on paid plans newsletters, RSS, an AI Co-Reader and Send to Kindle.
Ease of use
BThere's no App Store rating on record for it, so a B is as high as we go. Saving is the share sheet or a browser extension, and pages arrive already cleaned up for reading, with themes and fonts you can change.
A4.61 from about 1,200 App Store ratings. Save from the app or a browser extension and it shows up parsed and ready. Highlighting is a long press and a drag.
Platforms and integrations
AWeb, Mac, iPhone, iPad, Android and extensions for Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox, plus an API and syncing to Notion, Readwise and Obsidian. On Windows and Linux it runs as a web app.
BiPhone, iPad and the web, with saving extensions for Chrome, Safari and Firefox. No Android app is listed, and there's no desktop app. It links to Gmail, Kindle, Notion, Obsidian, Roam and Readwise, and has a REST API and a terminal client for Matter Pro subscribers.

Key features

Cubox

Saving from many places
Browser extensions for Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox, the share sheet on iPhone, iPad and Android, a Mac helper, Email Drop and an API all save content into one library.
Article parsing and snapshots
Saved pages are parsed into a clean reading view with adjustable themes and fonts, and a permanent snapshot keeps the page readable if the original link dies. Snapshots are for Pro members.
Highlights and annotations
Highlight passages and add notes while reading, then review them later through widgets and reminders. Multiple highlight colors are part of the Pro plans.
AI Insight and Ask AI
AI Insight gives an article a short summary, key questions and automatic Ghost Highlights, and Ask AI answers follow-up questions. Automatic insight on newly saved items comes with Pro+AI.
Folders, tags and search
Nested folders and tags, smart folders, batch editing and full-text search organize the library. The help center lists nested folders as exclusive to Pro members.
Export and integrations
Content exports as Markdown, HTML or PDF, and collections and annotations sync to Notion, Readwise and Obsidian. Third-party integrations are a Pro feature.

Matter

Save articles, PDFs and threads
Save from the iPhone and iPad apps or from the Chrome, Safari and Firefox extensions. Saved pages are parsed into a clean reading view and are available offline.
Podcast and YouTube transcripts
Saved YouTube videos and podcast episodes are transcribed into text that stays in sync with playback, so they can be read or listened to.
Newsletters, writers and feeds
Paid subscribers can pull newsletters in through Gmail or a personal Matter email address, follow individual writers and add RSS feeds.
Text to speech
Articles and newsletters can be played as audio, with highlighting while listening. HD text to speech for all articles is a paid feature.
Highlights and exports
Highlight by long-pressing and dragging, or with Apple Pencil on iPad, and sync highlights to Notion, Obsidian, Roam and Readwise.
API and CLI
A REST API and a terminal client give read and write access to the library, tags and annotations. Both require a Matter Pro subscription.
