Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.4
GPA, above 7 of the 35 other journaling apps we grade
Dabble Me is a private journal run over email: the service sends a prompt asking how your day went, and your reply is saved as that day's entry. The same emails resurface entries you wrote in past years. The free plan sends a prompt every other Sunday, and the PRO plan adds a custom schedule, photos, search, a web editor and a connector for AI assistants. It launched in 2014, is still run by its original developer, and its code is public on GitHub under the MIT license.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Dabble Me, taken from its own pages and our grades.
It emails to ask how your day went, you reply, and that's the entry saved.
- 1
Best for journaling by replying to an email
Dabble Me is a journal you keep from your inbox.
- 2
Paid plans start at $3.33 a month when paid by the year
As its pricing page puts it: $4 per month, or $40 per year.
- 3

- 4
It runs on Web

- 5
Journaling by email reply
A prompt arrives in your inbox and your reply becomes that day's entry. Several replies on one day are added to the same entry, and a date in the subject line files it elsewhere.
- 6
Blasts from the past
Each prompt email carries an entry you wrote on an earlier date, so old entries come back without you looking for them. This is part of the free plan.
- 7
Custom schedule
PRO members choose the days and times prompts arrive, from daily to weekly. Free accounts get a prompt every other Sunday.
- 8

The report card
Best for journaling by replying to an email
Dabble Me is a journal you keep from your inbox. It emails to ask how your day went, you reply, and that's the entry saved. Free only sends that email every other Sunday, and search, photos and the web editor need PRO at $4 a month. There's no app, and entries aren't end-to-end encrypted.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | PRO is $4 a month, or $40 a year, which works out at $3.33 a month against a middle of $4.17 for journaling apps here. Ordinary money, in other words, and it's what buys the basics: your own prompt schedule, photos, search, the calendar view and the web editor. |
| Free plan and trial | C | Free forever, and your replies really are saved as entries with old ones mailed back to you. But the prompt comes only every other Sunday, and search, photos and the web editor are all PRO, so you'll meet the wall early. |
| Features | C | It does the email journal fully: reply and it's filed under the day, with an old entry tucked into each prompt, and PRO adds 8 photos an entry, hashtags, search, importers and an MCP connector for Claude or ChatGPT. The gaps it owns up to: no end-to-end encryption, and the basics sit behind PRO. |
| Ease of use | B | No rating on record, but there's nothing to set up at all: if you can reply to an email, you can keep this journal. Reply twice in a day and both land in the same entry. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | Web and email, with no phone or desktop app, but it does connect out: on PRO an MCP server lets Claude, ChatGPT and other compatible assistants search and add entries once you approve it. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Dabble Me is for
- Fits if you'd sooner reply to an email than open another app
- Works for asking Claude or ChatGPT questions about your own journal, on PRO
Who it is not for
- Tight if you're staying free, because the prompt only comes every other Sunday
- Skip it if you want end-to-end encryption, as your entries pass through email providers on the way
- Not for you if you want a phone app to write in
- Pricey if you just want search, photos or a calendar view, as each needs PRO at $4 a month
- Watch out: entries an AI assistant reads through the connector go to that assistant's provider
Good to know
Good for
- People who would sooner reply to an email than open a journaling app
- Rereading old entries, which come back inside the prompt emails
- Journal keepers who want to query their entries from Claude or ChatGPT
Worth knowing
- There is no mobile or desktop app: you write by replying to an email or in a web browser.
- Free accounts get a prompt only every other Sunday; daily prompts, photos, search, the calendar view and the web editor need PRO.
- Entries are not end-to-end encrypted: the privacy policy notes that email content passes through email providers in transit.
- Entries an AI assistant reads through the connector are sent to that assistant's provider for processing.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
You could make this
A journal at its plainest is dated entries of text and photos.
What Dabble Me does at its core is daily notes, and that is the kind of thing an AI app builder makes well. You would give up one thing, listed below, and little else. It costs $40 a year. An AI app builder starts at about $19 a month on our listings, and you only need it while you build. Dabble Me is open source, so there is a third way: take its code and run it yourself.
What you could make
- Daily notes: an app builder makes this well.
- It runs in a browser, which is where something home-made would run too.
What you could not
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
What this rests on. Dabble Me’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
