Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.4
GPA, above 8 of the 42 other time tracking apps we grade
Daily is a Mac app that tracks time by asking, at intervals, what you are doing, so there are no timers to start or stop. The answers build timesheets per day, week, month and year, grouped by category, client or project, which can be exported or sent to other tools. An iOS companion app shows and edits those timesheets away from the Mac. It is made by one independent developer and needs a paid license to track time.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Daily, taken from its own pages and our grades.
There's nothing to set up: install it on your Mac, it asks what you're doing, you pick an activity and carry on.
- 1
Best for Mac users who forget to start timers
The App Store also lists a quarterly price the app's own description doesn't name.
- 2
Paid plans start at $3.33 a month when paid by the year
As its pricing page puts it: $39.99 per year or $7.99 per month; lifetime license $99.99.
- 3
You can try it first
Free trial license for new users; the length is not stated on the vendor's site
- 4
It runs on 2 platforms
macOS and iOS.
- 5
Asks instead of timing
Daily periodically asks what you are doing and logs the answer, so no timer has to be toggled when you switch tasks. The vendor says confirming your activity regularly also helps against procrastination.
- 6
Timesheets
Timesheets cover a day, week, month or year, broken down by category, project or customer, and show when work started and stopped. Time can be added or edited.
- 7
Scheduler and silent tracking
A scheduler sets when Daily tracks on each day of the week and accounts for overtime. An activity can also be applied silently for a set duration.
- 8
A 2.4 GPA, above 8 of 42
That is against the other time tracking apps we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 9

The report card
Best for Mac users who forget to start timers
Daily is a Mac app that pops up every so often and asks what you're doing, so there's no timer to forget, at $39.99 a year or $99.99 once. Tracking only happens on a Mac, the iOS app just views and edits, invoices are made in another tool, there's no free plan, and the trial's length isn't published. The App Store also lists a quarterly price the app's own description doesn't name.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | B | $39.99 a year works out cheaper per month than most time trackers start at, and $99.99 buys it outright, which is roughly two and a half years of the going rate. The iOS app comes with any license. Don't pay monthly: $7.99 a month is $95.88 over a year. |
| Free plan and trial | C | No free plan, and you need a license to track anything. New users get a free trial license with no card asked for, but Daily's site doesn't say how long it runs, so you're buying on trust. |
| Features | C | It asks, you answer, and timesheets build up by day, week, month and year, with a scheduler for your hours and CSV, JSON and PDF export. That one job it does fully, but it is a smaller job: no invoicing, no team side, and the iOS app only views and edits what the Mac recorded. |
| Ease of use | B | No store rating on record. There's nothing to set up: install it on your Mac, it asks what you're doing, you pick an activity and carry on. Nothing to start, nothing to stop. |
| Platforms and integrations | C | Apple only. Tracking happens on the Mac, the iOS app shows and edits your timesheets, and the FAQ says there's no Windows app. A web API, Zapier and AppleScript do get your hours out to other tools. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Daily is for
- Fits if you work on a Mac and forget to start a timer
- Works for people who report hours to an employer each week from a timesheet
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you work on Windows, because tracking only happens on a Mac
- Not for you if you want invoices made in the same app, since Daily hands your hours to another tool
- Not for you if you need a free plan, as tracking takes a paid license and the trial's length isn't published
- Pricey if you pay monthly, at $7.99 a month, which is $95.88 over a year against $39.99 yearly
- Watch out: business licenses are priced in euros before VAT, and each one is tied to a single device
Good to know
Good for
- Mac users who forget to start and stop timers
- Employees who report hours to an employer each week
- People who want a lifetime license instead of a subscription
Worth knowing
- Tracking happens only on the Mac; the iOS app views and edits timesheets, and the FAQ says there is no Windows app.
- A license is needed to track time. There is no free plan, and the length of the trial is not published.
- Business licenses are priced in euros, excluding VAT, and each one is assigned to a single device.
- The integrations page describes sending billable hours to an invoicing system; invoices are made in that other tool.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
The plain part of Daily you could make: time tracking. What surrounds it you could not. The 3 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.
That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 24 of the 42 other time tracking apps grade higher. It costs $39.99 a year.
What you could make
- Time tracking: an app builder makes this well.
What you could not
- A native app living in the menu bar.
- Apps for macOS and iOS that stay in step with each other.
- It plugs into other products, Zapier among them, and has an API.
What this rests on. Daily’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
