Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.0
GPA, above 1 of the 13 other e-signature and proposal tools we grade
Dropbox Sign, the product once called HelloSign, sends documents out for e-signature and keeps a tamper-proof audit trail of each request. Paid plans put no cap on the number of signature requests, and templates, reminders and signer fields come with every one. It is sold on its own, and Dropbox storage plans include a few requests a month.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Dropbox Sign, taken from its own pages and our grades.
No store rating on record, so this rests on the listing.

The report card
Best for unlimited signature requests from a familiar name
Dropbox Sign, the old HelloSign, puts no cap on signature requests on its paid plans, and that's its big selling point. But three people on Standard pay $75 a month billed yearly, and even then you get 15 templates and no SMS checks on signers.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | D | $75 a month for three on Standard, billed yearly ($25 a head, $30 monthly). That's this category's dearest tenth. To be fair, requests are unlimited with no overage fees, so a busy month never costs more. One person alone pays $15 on Essentials. |
| Free plan and trial | C | A free plan for one sender and 3 signature requests a month. Fine for the odd lease, nowhere near 20 contracts a month. There's also a 30-day free trial of the paid plans. |
| Features | C | Unlimited requests, templates and template links, field validation, signer attachments, reminders, and bulk send and branding on Standard. The gaps: Standard stops at 15 templates, and SMS authentication, SSO and Salesforce all need Premium, sold through sales. |
| Ease of use | C | No store rating on record, so this rests on the listing. It's a web app where you drag fields onto each document and build your templates, so there's a bit of setting up. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | Web only, but it sends from Dropbox, Google Drive, Microsoft Word, HubSpot and Slack, and there's an API, priced separately from these plans. No phone or desktop app is listed. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Dropbox Sign is for
- Great if your contracts already live in Dropbox
- Handy when you send lots of agreements and hate counting envelopes
- Good for anyone signing the odd document, as 3 requests a month are free
Who it is not for
- Pricey if you're three or more, at $25 a head even billed yearly
- Tight if you lean on templates, as Standard stops at 15
- Not for you if you have more than 5 senders, as that means Premium on a quote
Good to know
Good for
- Freelancers and small teams who send many agreements and want no per-envelope limit
- Dropbox users who keep their contracts in Dropbox already
- Anyone who signs only now and then: 3 requests a month are free
Worth knowing
- Standard covers 2 to 5 users; more than five senders means the Premium plan, priced by quote.
- SSO, SMS authentication, the Salesforce integration and data residency are Premium only.
- Dropbox storage plans include unlimited self-signing but only 3 signature requests a month.
- The Dropbox Sign API is priced separately from these plans.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Your call
You could make the core of Dropbox Sign for yourself: documents and templates.
What you would give up is listed below. Whether that is worth the price is your call. It costs $180 a year.
What you could make
- Documents and templates: an app builder makes these well.
- It runs in a browser, which is where something home-made would run too.
What you could not
- It plugs into other products, Dropbox, Google Drive and Microsoft Word among them, and has an API.
- What a company asks for before it lets staff use something: roles and permissions.
What this rests on. Dropbox Sign’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
