Dropbox refunds and cancellation

CGrade

Ordinary · checked Oct 18, 2026

Dropbox says plainly that payments are not refundable in most cases, and the terms add that refunds are only issued where the law requires. What you get instead is an easy exit: you cancel on your own account page, you keep the paid plan to the end of the cycle, and on a yearly plan Dropbox says it emails a reminder before the renewal, which many rivals never do. Ordinary terms, decently handled, so a C.

Getting your money back

The refunds article says payments for Dropbox and Dropbox Dash subscriptions and team member licences are not refundable in most cases, and the terms say refunds are only issued if required by law. People in the EU, UK or Turkey are told they can get a refund if they cancel Plus, Family, Professional or Essentials within 14 days of purchase, by asking support. App store purchases are refunded by that store.

How to cancel Dropbox

A Plus, Professional or Essentials subscription is cancelled at dropbox.com under your avatar, then Manage account, then Cancel plan. Dropbox says a plan bought on a phone has to be cancelled in that app store instead, and that it will also accept a cancellation sent by post, with a template letter and the details it needs. Family and team plans have their own articles.

  1. Log in at dropbox.com
  2. Click your avatar in the bottom-left corner
  3. Click Manage account
  4. Click Cancel plan at the bottom of the page
  5. Select a reason for cancelling
  6. Click Continue canceling or Confirm change and follow the prompts

What you keep afterwards

Dropbox says the account changes to the free Basic plan at the end of the current billing cycle and is not charged again, and that a confirmation email follows. Basic comes with 2 GB of storage, and the article warns that over that limit you may not be able to sync, upload, share, move or preview files, and that Dropbox may delete files you own to bring the account back under the limit.

Renewals

The terms say Dropbox bills automatically from the day you convert to a paid account and at each renewal until it is cancelled, and that on an annual plan it sends a reminder email a reasonable time before the renewal date. Fees can change at renewal, with no less than 30 days' notice by email and a chance to cancel first. The terms add that local cancellation laws are not overridden.

In your favour

  • On a yearly plan the terms promise a reminder email before the renewal, which is rare and worth having.
  • You cancel yourself on the account page, and the paid plan runs to the end of the cycle you paid for.
  • A price rise at renewal comes with at least 30 days' notice and a chance to cancel first.
  • Dropbox will accept a cancellation by post, and publishes a template for it.

Watch out for

  • Payments are not refundable in most cases: cancelling stops the next charge and no more than that.
  • The 14-day refund for the EU, UK and Turkey is a legal right, and you have to ask support for it.
  • Back on Basic you get 2 GB, and Dropbox says it may delete files to bring you under the limit.
  • Bought it on a phone? The app store cancels it and the app store decides any refund.

Getting help from Dropbox

AGrade

Excellent · checked Oct 18, 2026

Dropbox publishes what every plan gets and how fast, which hardly anyone does. Pay anything at all and live chat is open during local business hours, with an email reply targeted inside one business day; business admins add a phone line, and Enterprise gets an hour-long email target and round-the-clock phone. The help centre and forum are there for free accounts too. The catch, and it is only a catch, is that Plus and Professional go through an AI assistant before the chat.

Ways to get help

  • Live chat

Live chat is listed for Plus, Professional, Essentials, the Family manager and all team plans; on team plans it is admins only. Dropbox says Plus and Professional customers go through its AI assistant before reaching email and live chat.

    Stated on help.dropbox.com
  • Phone

Phone support is listed for Standard, Advanced, Business, Business Plus and Enterprise, and marked as admins only. The table shows no phone support for Basic, Plus, Professional, Essentials or Family.

  • Email

Email support is listed for every paid plan and not for the free Basic plan. Requests start at the support page after logging in, which shows the options for your plan and account type.

  • Help centre

The Dropbox help centre holds written articles on accounts, billing, plans, syncing, sharing and the desktop and mobile apps, open without logging in and listed as available on every plan.

  • Community or forum

The Dropbox Community forums, where users and Dropbox staff answer questions. The support table lists them for every plan, free accounts included.

When people answer

Live chat runs during your local business hours, 9:00am to 5:00pm Monday to Friday, on Plus, Family, Professional, Essentials and the team plans. Enterprise gets chat around the clock Monday to Friday and phone support 24 hours a day, every day. Dropbox says the help centre and forums are there at any hour, and that social media support runs Monday to Friday.

How fast it says it replies

Dropbox says an email answer arrives within one business day, Monday to Friday, on Plus, Family, Professional, Essentials, Standard, Advanced, Business and Business Plus, and within one hour any day of the week on Enterprise. It says a reply on social media comes within an hour during the hours that channel is staffed.

What depends on your plan

Basic accounts get the help centre, the forums and social media only. Paid individual plans add email and live chat. Team plans from Standard upwards add phone support, with chat and phone limited to admins. Enterprise shortens the email target to an hour and extends the phone line to all hours, and a team can buy a Premium Support add-on for round-the-clock email, chat and phone.

In your favour

  • Dropbox publishes a table of which channel each plan gets, and the hours and reply targets with it.
  • Live chat with stated hours comes with every paid plan, not just the team ones.
  • The stated email target is one business day on every paid plan below Enterprise.
  • Free Basic accounts still get the help centre, the forums and social media support.

Watch out for

  • On Plus and Professional you go through the AI assistant before email or chat is offered.
  • On team plans live chat and phone are for admins only, so everyone else asks an admin.
  • No phone support on any individual plan, however much you pay for storage.
  • Chat outside 9 to 5, Monday to Friday, means Enterprise or the paid Premium Support add-on.

What these two grades rest on. Read on 18 October 2026: Dropbox's help articles on refunds, on cancelling or changing an individual subscription and on how to contact support, its terms of service, its contact page and the Dropbox Community forums. Nobody here cancelled a plan or contacted its support. They are graded apart from the five that make the GPA. How we grade refunds and support.
