Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.8
GPA, above 19 of the 35 other journaling apps we grade
Easy Diary is an open-source diary app for Android. Entries are typed or dictated with voice recognition, can include photos, and are browsed through a calendar, a timeline or search. The app locks with a PIN or fingerprint, can be restyled with color themes and custom fonts, and backs up to the user's own Google Drive. Every feature is free and without ads, and the source code is published on GitHub under the GPL-3.0 license.
To get you started, here are 8 things to know about Easy Diary, taken from its own pages and our grades.
No rating on record, but there's nothing to set up: install it from Google Play or F-Droid and start writing.

The report card
Best for a free Android diary you can dress up
Easy Diary is a free diary for Android with no ads and no paid tier. You type or dictate an entry, add photos, lock it with a PIN or fingerprint and pick from 171 colour themes. But it's Android only and there's no sync, so a new phone means a Google Drive backup and restore, and the F-Droid build leaves out even that.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | A | Free, with every feature included and no ads, where journaling apps here sit around $4.17 a month in the middle. The code is open source under GPL-3.0 and the author takes donations, nothing more. |
| Free plan and trial | A | All of it is free. The Google Play and F-Droid listings both say every feature comes without ads, there's no paid plan to upgrade to and no cap to meet. |
| Features | C | The basics of a diary: typing or dictation, photos, search with the matches highlighted, a calendar, a timeline, a PIN or fingerprint lock, 171 themes and a postcard image you can share. The gap is sync, which doesn't exist, only backup and restore through your own Google Drive. |
| Ease of use | B | No rating on record, but there's nothing to set up: install it from Google Play or F-Droid and start writing. Worth knowing before you do, the README credits the app's English text to machine translation. |
| Platforms and integrations | D | One operating system: Android, with no iPhone, desktop or web version. Google Drive backup is its single connection, and the F-Droid build leaves even that out. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Easy Diary is for
- Fits if you're on Android and want a diary with no ads and nothing to pay
- Works for dictating entries instead of typing
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you have an iPhone or want to write on a computer, as it's Android only
- Not for you if you want entries on two devices at once, because there's no sync service
- Tight if you install from F-Droid, since that build has no Google Drive backup and gets new features later
- Watch out: the README says the app's English text is machine translated
Good to know
Good for
- Android users who want a free diary with no ads and no paid tier
- People who prefer open-source apps and install from F-Droid
- Customizers who want many color themes and their own fonts
Worth knowing
- Android only: there is no iOS, desktop or web version.
- There is no sync service; moving entries to another phone means a Google Drive backup and restore.
- The FOSS build flavor leaves out Google Mobile Services, so it has no Google Drive backup, and new features reach it later.
- The README credits the app's English text to machine translation.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
Easy Diary is free, so making your own would save you nothing.
And it is not the kind of software a weekend replaces.
What you could make
- Daily notes: an app builder makes this well.
What you could not
- Dictation that types into any app on your computer.
- A real app for Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
- Sharing with other people, which means accounts and invitations.
What this rests on. Easy Diary’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
