Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.6
GPA, above 50 of the 147 other note-taking apps we grade
Evernote is a note-taking app for collecting notes, web pages, scanned documents and recordings, and finding them again through search. Notes live in notebooks and shared spaces next to tasks and a calendar, and an AI assistant can search, organize and edit them from a chat. Evernote is operated by Bending Spoons, and its free plan is limited to 50 notes synced to one device.
To get you started, here are 10 things to know about Evernote, taken from its own pages and our grades.
Reviews going back several years do report crashes, freezes and unsaved edits in the iPhone and iPad app, sometimes after a big update.
- 1
Best for a searchable archive of clippings, scans and notes
Evernote is a filing cabinet for clipped web pages, scans and notes, with search to find them years later, plus tasks, a calendar and an AI assistant.
- 2
Paid plans start at $8.25 a month when paid by the year
As its pricing page puts it: $99 per year (about $8.25 a month), or $14.99 billed monthly.
- 3
There is a free plan
50 notes, 1 notebook, 5 spaces, 20 tags, 200 attachments, 1 GB of storage, 1 connected external calendar and sync on 1 device.
- 4
It runs on 5 platforms
Web, macOS, Windows, iOS and Android, with a browser extension too.
- 5
Web Clipper and document scanning
A browser extension for Chrome, Firefox and Safari saves web pages into notes, and paper documents can be scanned in alongside them.
- 6
Advanced and semantic search
Search supports Boolean, geographic and filtered queries, and semantic search surfaces related notes based on their content.
- 7
Tasks and calendar
Tasks take due dates, reminders and assignees. Google and Microsoft calendars can be connected: 1 on the Free plan and 5 on paid plans.
- 8
Refunds: 60 days
Evernote puts real numbers on it. Ask within 60 days of a yearly payment, or 20 days of a monthly one, and its refund policy says you get your money back.
- 9
A 2.6 GPA, above 50 of 147
That is against the other note-taking apps we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

The report card
Best for a searchable archive of clippings, scans and notes
Evernote is a filing cabinet for clipped web pages, scans and notes, with search to find them years later, plus tasks, a calendar and an AI assistant. Free is 50 notes, 1 notebook and one device, Starter is $99 a year and still caps you at 1,000 notes and 3 devices, no caps means Advanced at $249.99 a year, and there's no Linux app.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | D | Starter is $99 a year, about $8.25 a month, or $14.99 paid monthly, and it still stops at 1,000 notes and 3 devices. The plan with no caps is Advanced at $249.99 a year, more than $20 a month, where this category's middle is $6. |
| Free plan and trial | C | There is a free plan and it's tiny: 50 notes, 1 notebook, 1 GB of storage and sync on a single device, so it's your phone or your laptop, not both. Paid plans come with a 7-day trial. |
| Features | B | A Web Clipper for three browsers, document scanning, Boolean and semantic search, tasks with reminders, connected calendars, an AI assistant, meeting transcripts and shared notes edited live. The odd gap: in-note encryption is desktop-only and AI Cleanup mobile-only. |
| Ease of use | B | 4.41 from about 78,000 App Store ratings, which meets the 4.3 from 10,000 ratings a B needs. Reviews going back several years do report crashes, freezes and unsaved edits in the iPhone and iPad app, sometimes after a big update. |
| Platforms and integrations | A | Web, Mac, Windows, iPhone, Android and a browser clipper, with Google Drive, Gmail, Slack and Outlook connected and an MCP connector that lets Claude or ChatGPT work with your notes. No Linux app, mind. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Evernote is for
- Fits if you save web pages, scans and PDFs by the hundred and need to find them again
- Works for people with years of old Evernote notes, who say quick retrieval is what they rely on it for
Who it is not for
- Tight if you're never paying, because Free is 50 notes, 1 notebook, 1 GB and one device
- Pricey if you just want somewhere to write, at $99 a year for a plan capped at 1,000 notes and 3 devices
- Skip it if you're on Linux, as the desktop apps are for Mac and Windows only
- Watch out: unlimited notes means Advanced at $249.99 a year, and the AI assistant has monthly and per-chat limits
- Watch out: App Store reviews report crashes and unsaved edits on iPhone and iPad, and in-note encryption is desktop-only
Good to know
Good for
- People who save web pages, scans and documents and need to search across them
- Keeping notes, tasks and calendar events in a single app
- Teams that want shared notes with central administration and single sign-on

- Starter is capped at 1,000 notes, 20 notebooks, 5 GB of storage and 3 synced devices.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
The plain part of Evernote you could make: notes, web clipper, tasks, calendar and templates. What surrounds it you could not. The 5 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.
It costs $99 a year.
What you could make
- Notes, web clipper, tasks, calendar and templates: an app builder makes these well.
What you could not
- Apps for macOS, Windows, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
- Several people working in it at the same moment.
- It plugs into other products, Google Calendar, Google Drive and Gmail among them.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
- The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.
What this rests on. Evernote’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
Part 05 · Refunds
After you pay
Getting your money back, getting out, and getting help
What happens once you have paid: whether you can get your money back, how to leave, and how to reach a person when something goes wrong. Each is graded from Evernote’s own terms and help pages.
Refunds and cancelling
Excellent · checked Oct 12, 2026
Evernote puts real numbers on it. Ask within 60 days of a yearly payment, or 20 days of a monthly one, and its refund policy says you get your money back. You cancel yourself under Billing, and your notes stay put afterwards on the free plan, where you can still read and export them. Sixty days is generous, and that's what an A is for. Just don't miss the window, because after it there's nothing.
- Refund window
- 60 days
- How you cancel
- Yourself, in settings
- Getting your money back
The refund policy says Evernote will process a refund on a Starter or Advanced subscription if the request arrives within 20 days of a monthly payment or 60 days of an annual one, and the same for Enterprise. After that there are no prorated refunds or credits. Its refund guide says you ask through a refund option under Billing, where that has reached your account, or through the contact form.
Stated on help.evernote.com- How to cancel Evernote
For a plan paid by card, PayPal or SEPA, you cancel in Account Settings on Evernote Web, under Billing, and get a confirmation email. A subscription bought through Apple or Google Play is cancelled with that store, and the refund policy says Evernote may be unable to refund store payments. Enterprise subscriptions have their own article on cancelling.
- Log in to your Account Settings on Evernote Web
- Select Billing in the left-hand menu
- Next to Your plan, select Manage
- At the bottom of the page, select Cancel plan
- Scroll to the bottom and click Cancel and lose all benefits
- If more than one device is connected, disconnect all but one, then click Disconnect and cancel plan
- What you keep afterwards
The account reverts to the Free plan at the end of the billing cycle. The help page says no notes or data are lost: you can still view, edit, export and delete existing notes and notebooks. On Free you cannot create new notes while the account holds more than 50 notes or more than one notebook, and you can use Evernote on one device at a time.
Stated on help.evernote.com- Renewals
The Commercial Terms say a monthly or annual subscription renews automatically, charged on or near the same calendar day, until you cancel. They promise advance notice of a price change but no reminder before an ordinary renewal, and a help article suggests setting your own. The refund policy counts its 20 and 60 days from the date of the payment and does not set renewals apart.
Stated on evernote.com
In your favour
- Sixty days to ask for your money back on a yearly plan, and twenty on a monthly one.
- You cancel yourself under Billing, and an email confirms it.
- Nothing is deleted when you leave. Your notes stay, and you can still read, edit and export them.
- The refund window is counted from each payment, and the policy doesn't carve out renewals.
Watch out for
- Miss the 20 or 60 days and that's it: no partial refunds for the time left.
- Paid through Apple or Google Play? Evernote says it may not be able to refund you, so you go to the store.
- Back on Free with more than 50 notes, you can't add new ones.
- No reminder before a renewal is promised. Its own help page tells you to set one.
Customer support
Ordinary · checked Oct 12, 2026
You can file a ticket on any plan, free included, and there's a big help centre and a forum. That's the lot, though. Evernote says outright that it has no phone support, it gives no hours and no reply time, and the first answer you get is an automated one. There is a priority queue, but only on the top Enterprise plan. Ordinary stuff, so a C.
Ways to get help
Contact form or ticket
A contact form on the help centre takes tickets once you log in. The first reply is automated, with troubleshooting steps, and you answer that email to reach a team member. A ticket left unanswered closes by itself.

- What depends on your plan
The plan comparison gives every plan, Free included, the Help & Learning center, the community forum and support tickets. A priority queue and a dedicated Customer Success Manager are marked for the Unlimited tier of Enterprise only, and not for Starter or Advanced.
Stated on evernote.com
In your favour
- Anyone can file a ticket, even on the Free plan.
- The help centre is thorough: cancelling, refunds and exporting each get their own article.
- There's a community forum on every plan.
Watch out for
- No phone support at all. Evernote's own support page says so.
- No hours and no reply time are stated anywhere.
- The first reply is automated, and the ticket closes by itself if you don't answer it.
- Paying for Starter or Advanced doesn't move you up the queue. Priority is for the top Enterprise tier.
What these two grades rest on. Read on 12 October 2026: Evernote's terms of service and Commercial Terms, its refund policy, its help articles on cancelling, requesting a refund, what happens to notes on the Free plan, closing an account and contacting support, and its plan comparison.
