Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
1.8
GPA, above 0 of the 69 other writing tools we grade
Fictionary is web-based software for outlining, writing and editing fiction with a focus on story structure. A manuscript is worked through scene by scene against story elements for character, plot and setting, with visualizations such as an automated story arc and AI feedback on each scene. StoryTeller is the version for writers and StoryCoach is a separate plan for professional editors; the company also sells a membership that adds live classes and a community.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Fictionary, taken from its own pages and our grades.
The editing journey explains the terms as you go, and manuscripts come in as Word .docx files only.
- 1
Best for fixing a novel's structure before its sentences
It takes Word files only and runs only in a browser on a laptop or desktop.
- 2
Paid plans start at $14 a month
As its pricing page puts it: $14 per month, billed annually ($168); $19 billed monthly.

- 5
Scene-by-scene story evaluation
A manuscript is assessed one scene at a time for character, plot and setting, covering points such as the scene goal, tension, conflict and point-of-view goals.
- 6
Story arc and 15 visualizations
Fifteen visualizations, including an automated Story Arc and a Story Goal Tracker, show where the structure has problems, and a Story Map gives an overview of the whole book.
- 7
AI feedback on every scene
A built-in AI writing instructor the company calls Edwina gives immediate, scene-specific feedback as you write or revise.

The report card
Best for fixing a novel's structure before its sentences
Fictionary checks whether a story works before you edit its sentences: it goes through your manuscript scene by scene, draws your story arc and gives AI feedback on each scene. It's $14 a month on the yearly plan and holds 3 manuscripts, with no free plan after the 7-day trial. It takes Word files only and runs only in a browser on a laptop or desktop.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | D | StoryTeller is $14 a month billed annually and $19 month to month, against a category middle of $8.33 and a dearer quarter that starts at $12.00. For that you hold 3 manuscripts at a time; track changes, comments and series support are Premium at $29 a month, more than three times the middle. |
| Free plan and trial | C | No free plan. Every plan opens with a 7-day trial that asks for no credit card, and when the week is up it's a paid subscription or nothing. |
| Features | C | Each scene checked for character, plot and setting, 15 visualizations including an automated Story Arc, an AI instructor commenting on every scene, genre outline templates and a step-by-step editing journey. Structural editing done fully, but a smaller job than this category's: no formatting, no export beyond Word. |
| Ease of use | C | No store rating on record, and it's a browser tool with its own vocabulary to pick up: scene goals, entry hooks, point-of-view goals, 15 visualizations. The editing journey explains the terms as you go, and manuscripts come in as Word .docx files only. |
| Platforms and integrations | C | Web only, and not even all of the web: the support FAQ says Safari or Chrome on a laptop or desktop, with phones and tablets not supported yet. There's nothing it really connects to either, just .docx import and whatever browser checker you already run. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Fictionary is for
- Fits if you've finished a first draft and want to fix the structure before the sentences
- Works for freelance editors, since StoryCoach handles 20 clients at a time
Who it is not for
- Not for you if you want a free plan, as it's a 7-day trial and then a subscription
- Pricey if you're writing a series or need track changes, which need Premium at $29 a month billed annually
- Skip it if you edit on a tablet or phone, which aren't supported yet
- Tight if you juggle several manuscripts, as StoryTeller holds 3 at a time
- Watch out: manuscripts come in as Word .docx files only, and there's no formatting or export beyond Word
Good to know
Good for
- Novelists revising a first draft for structure before line editing
- Genre fiction writers who want an outline template to follow
- Freelance editors delivering structural edits to several clients
Worth knowing
- There is no free plan: after the 7-day trial every plan is a paid subscription.
- The support FAQ says it works in Safari or Chrome on a laptop or desktop, and that phones and tablets are not supported yet.
- Manuscripts are imported only as Microsoft Word .docx files, and StoryTeller holds 3 manuscripts at a time unless you move to Premium.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
You could make this
A writing app at its plainest is a page that saves what you type.
What Fictionary does at its core is long-form writing and templates, and that is the kind of thing an AI app builder makes well. You would give up one thing, listed below, and little else. It costs $168 a year. An AI app builder starts at about $19 a month on our listings, and you only need it while you build.
What you could make
- Long-form writing and templates: an app builder makes these well.
- It runs in a browser, which is where something home-made would run too.
What you could not
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
What this rests on. Fictionary’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
