Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.2

GPA, above 0 of the 36 other read-later and bookmark apps we grade

Fiery Feeds is a feed reader and read-later client for iPhone, iPad and Mac made by Lukas Burgstaller. It connects to feed services such as Feedly, Feedbin, Inoreader and NewsBlur, to self-hosted servers, or to local and iCloud accounts, and it can also sync Instapaper and wallabag read-later accounts. The app is free to download, and an optional Pro subscription unlocks text extraction, smart views, feed management and deeper customization on all three platforms.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Fiery Feeds, taken from its own pages and our grades.

  1. 1

Best for tinkerers who want one Apple app for every feed

  3. 3

    Wide choice of feed accounts

  6. 6

Article, web and text view modes

An article can be shown as the feed supplies it, as the web page inline, or as extracted text only, and the last mode used is remembered per feed. Text extraction is a Pro feature.

  7. 7

    Smart views and saved searches

Hot Links collects the sites most linked to from your articles, and other views sort by posting frequency or word count. Saved searches filter by keyword. Smart views are a Pro feature.

The report card

Best for tinkerers who want one Apple app for every feed

Fiery Feeds is a feed reader for iPhone, iPad and Mac that connects to feed services you already have, from Feedly to a FreshRSS server, with layouts and themes to adjust. Text extraction, offline full text, feed management, custom themes and widgets are all Pro, the App Store lists Pro at $1.99, $4.99 and $9.99 without saying what period each covers, and there's no web, Windows or Android version.

SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyCNo price is really published: the US App Store shows Pro at $1.99, $4.99 and $9.99 and doesn't say which billing period each one covers, so you can't tell what a year costs. One Pro unlock does cover iPhone, iPad and Mac.
Free plan and trialCFree to download and it will read and sync your feed and read-later accounts, but you meet the wall fast: text extraction, offline full text, feed management, smart views, custom themes and widgets are all Pro.
FeaturesBIt covers the whole job: ten feed services plus local and iCloud accounts that need no service at all, three ways to view an article, smart views like Hot Links, saved searches, two-way Instapaper and wallabag sync, and Apple Intelligence summaries. Reeder and Unread do much the same.
Ease of useC4.49 from 466 App Store ratings, middling rather than good. It's built for people who like settings, with one-, two- and three-pane layouts, themes and custom actions, so expect a session of fiddling before it feels like yours.
Platforms and integrationsCOne family of devices: iPhone, iPad and Mac, with a Safari extension. No web, Windows or Android version is listed, and it wants iOS 17 or macOS 14 or later.
Grade point averageFair, out of 4.02.2

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Fiery Feeds is for

  • Fits if you already use Feedly, Feedbin, Inoreader or NewsBlur and want an Apple app for it
  • Works for people who want feeds and an Instapaper or wallabag queue in one app

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you read on Windows, Android or the web, as it's iPhone, iPad and Mac only
  • Tight if you're staying free, since text extraction, offline full text, feed management and widgets are all Pro
  • Not for you if you want the price up front, because the App Store doesn't say what period each Pro price covers
  • Not for you if you want it ready with no setup, as layouts, themes and custom actions take a session of fiddling
  • Watch out: it needs iOS 17, iPadOS 17 or macOS 14 or later

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

The plain part of Fiery Feeds you could make: rSS reader and read later. What surrounds it you could not. The 4 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.

That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 34 of the 36 other read-later and bookmark apps grade higher.

What you could make

  • RSS reader and read later: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • Apps for macOS and iOS that stay in step with each other.
  • It plugs into other products, Feedly, Feedbin and Inoreader among them.
  • AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
  • The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.

What this rests on. Fiery Feeds’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
