Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

3.2

GPA, above 59 of the 65 other focus apps we grade

Flora is a free focus timer in which a virtual tree grows while you stay off your phone and dies if you leave the app for something else. It combines the timer with shared sessions for friends, a to-do list with reminders and goals, and a habit tracker with statistics. Optional paid extras are plant tours and opt-in services that fund real tree planting.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Flora, taken from its own pages and our grades.

Pick a length, press Start, and don't touch your phone.
From our grade for ease of use
  1. 1

Best for a free tree-growing timer to share with friends

    iOS and Android.

  5. 5

    Focus trees

Pick a duration and press Start to grow a tree. Leaving the app for social media or games kills it, and finished sessions unlock new plants on the Grand Tour.

  6. 6

    Group focus

Host or join a room with friends or by passcode. If everyone stays off their phone, each person wins an extra tree; if the host leaves, every tree in the room dies.

  7. 7

    To-do list and goals

To-do items can carry reminders and a time goal. Tagging a tree with a to-do adds that session's time to the goal, which can reset daily, weekly or monthly.

  8. 8

    A 3.2 GPA, above 59 of 65

The report card

Best for a free tree-growing timer to share with friends

Flora is a focus timer where a cartoon tree grows while you leave your phone alone and dies if you wander off, and friends can join a room so everyone's trees are on the line. The app is free, but it's phones only, the iOS app is iPhone only, stats aren't kept on Flora's servers so a reinstall wipes them, and the tree-planting extras have no published price.

ToolGPA report cardFloraGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyAThe whole app is free and AppFinca says there's no paid version, so there's nothing to compare with the $2.99 to $8.33 a month the rest of this category asks. The only money is $0.99 to $1.99 for a plant tour, paid once.
Free plan and trialANothing is held back. Timer, group rooms, to-do list, goals, habit tracker and stats are all in the free app, and there's no upgrade waiting to be sold to you.
FeaturesCTrees, rooms for friends, a to-do list with goals and a streak tracker. Does the basics, and the basics are free. But the stats aren't kept on Flora's servers, so a reinstall wipes them, which is a lot to lose from the one thing a focus app is meant to remember.
Ease of useA4.8 from about 82,800 App Store ratings. Pick a length, press Start, and don't touch your phone. There's nothing to set up first.
Platforms and integrationsCiPhone and Android, and that's the lot. No Mac, Windows or web version, and the Chrome Extension button on the homepage has no link behind it. Phones only, which is middle of the road here.
Grade point averageVery good, out of 4.03.2

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Flora is for

  • Fits if a dying cartoon tree is enough to keep you off your phone
  • Works for study groups who want a timer, to-do list and habit tracker without paying

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you drift on a laptop, as it's phones only
  • Not for you if you want years of stats kept safe, since a reinstall loses them
  • Watch out: the Price and Care tree-planting services cost money with no published amount, and Google Play lists items up to $134.99
  • Watch out: the homepage's Chrome Extension button links nowhere, and no store listing for it was found
  • Tight if you use an iPad, as the App Store lists the iOS app for iPhone only

Good to know

Good for

  • Students who stay off their phone better with a visual reward
  • Friends or study groups focusing together in a shared session
  • People who want a timer, to-do list and habit tracker in one free app

Worth knowing

  • The App Store lists the iOS app for iPhone only, and no Mac, Windows or web version is offered.
  • Statistics are not stored on Flora's servers, so they are lost if the app is reinstalled.
  • The Price and Care tree-planting services cost money, and their amounts are not published on the site; Google Play lists in-app items up to $134.99.
  • The homepage shows a Chrome Extension button, but it carries no link in the page source and no store listing could be confirmed.

Real tree planting
The opt-in Price and Care services plant real trees through partners such as Trees for the Future. A Price is charged only if you kill a tree and confirm it.

A session can be paused to use another app unless a Price is set, and on iOS 16.1 or later chosen apps can stay available during focus.

Who makes Flora

Flora is made by AppFinca Inc., the company named as owner and operator in Flora's terms of service and privacy policy. Money comes from the paid iPhone and Android apps and from the opt-in Price and Care services, which pay tree-planting organisations when a session ends.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Your call

A focus timer at its plainest counts down 25 minutes and keeps a log.

You could make the core of Flora for yourself: Pomodoro timer, tasks, habit tracking and goals. What you would give up is listed below. Whether that is worth the price is your call.

What you could make

  • Pomodoro timer, tasks, habit tracking and goals: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • Blocking that reaches every browser and app and is hard to switch off.
  • A real app for iOS and Android. Something home-made would be a web page.

What this rests on. Flora’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
