Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.4
GPA, above 13 of the 51 other docs and wiki tools we grade
GitBook is a platform for writing and publishing product documentation, API references and help centers. Teams edit in a block-based editor or sync content with GitHub or GitLab, then publish it as a hosted docs site. Paid plans are priced per published site plus a fee per user. They add an AI assistant that answers readers' questions, paid for from a monthly allowance of AI credits, and an agent that writes and updates content.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about GitBook, taken from its own pages and our grades.
- 1
Best for product and API docs that live alongside your code
GitBook publishes product and API docs that stay in sync with GitHub or GitLab, and one person can run unlimited basic sites free.
- 2
Paid plans start at $65 a month
As its pricing page puts it: $65 per site / month, billed annually, plus $12 per user / month.
- 3
There is a free plan
Free plan for one user: unlimited basic sites with unlimited traffic, the visual editor, GitHub or GitLab sync, API playgrounds and preview deployments. No custom domain or AI Assistant, and GitBook Agent is capped at 10 messages a week.
- 4
It runs on Web
Web.
- 5
Block-based editor
A visual editor built from blocks, including custom ones. Added users collaborate through change requests and content reviews before edits are published.
- 6
Git Sync
Two-way sync with GitHub or GitLab lets a team branch, review and merge documentation like a pull request. It is included on every plan, the Free one too.
- 7
Published docs sites
Sites get unlimited traffic and preview deployments on every plan. Custom domains, branding and redirects start on Essential; sections and site groups need Ultimate.
- 8
A 2.4 GPA, above 13 of 51
That is against the other docs and wiki tools we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

Keep it
To replace GitBook you would be making a search engine with an AI model behind it. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card
Best for product and API docs that live alongside your code
GitBook publishes product and API docs that stay in sync with GitHub or GitLab, and one person can run unlimited basic sites free. Once you're a team, it's $65 a site a month plus $12 for every user, read-only members included, AI answers come out of a monthly pot of credits, and docs behind a login need Ultimate at $249 a site. SAML SSO is Enterprise only.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | D | Essential is $65 a site a month on yearly billing plus $12 for every user, read-only members included, against a category middle of $15. The parts plenty of docs teams need — docs behind a login, AI Assistant Chat, site sections — start at Ultimate, $249 a site, and extra AI credits are $47.50 for 5,000. |
| Free plan and trial | B | One user gets unlimited basic sites with unlimited traffic, the visual editor, GitHub or GitLab sync, API playgrounds and preview deployments, free for good. One user is the wall, with no custom domain, no AI Assistant and the Agent stopped at 10 messages a week. |
| Features | B | A block editor with change requests and content reviews, two-way Git Sync on every plan including the free one, hosted sites with unlimited traffic, API playgrounds built from OpenAPI files, an AI Assistant answering readers in the search box, and llms.txt and an MCP server per site. The job's covered. |
| Ease of use | C | No store rating on record. It's hosted, so there's no server to look after, and you can write in the visual editor or stay in Git, but there's a repo to sync and a site and domain to set up, and working out the bill — sites, users and AI credits all counted separately — is a job in itself. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | A web app, with no desktop or phone apps listed. It connects to GitHub, GitLab, Slack, Linear, Okta and Auth0, with Claude and ChatGPT alongside, and every site publishes its own MCP server. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who GitBook is for
- Fits if you publish product or API docs and want changes reviewed and merged like code
- Works for a solo writer, since one user gets unlimited basic sites for free
Who it is not for
- Pricey if your team is big, as every user is $12 a month on top of $65 a site, read-only members too
- Skip it if you need docs behind a login on a small budget, because that starts at $249 a site
- Tight if you lean on the AI answers, since Essential's 2,000 credits cover about 100 a month and packs start at $47.50
- Tight if you're staying free: one user, no custom domain, no AI Assistant, no live co-editing, and the Agent at 10 messages a week
- Not for you if you need SAML SSO without an Enterprise contract, or a desktop or phone app
Good to know
Good for
- Public product and API documentation for software companies
- Teams that want docs reviewed and merged in a Git workflow
- Open source projects, which can apply for the free Community plan
Worth knowing
- Paid plans combine a per-site fee with $12 per user / month, and guests and read-only members cost the same as other members.
- AI answers and translations use credits: Essential includes 2,000 a month and Ultimate 10,000, at 20 per relevant answer. Extra packs start at $47.50 a month for 5,000.
- The Free plan covers a single user and leaves out custom domains, the AI Assistant and real-time collaboration.
- SAML SSO is limited to Enterprise; AI Assistant Chat, adaptive content and authenticated access need Ultimate at $249 per site / month.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace GitBook you would be making a search engine with an AI model behind it. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 27 of the 51 other docs and wiki tools grade higher. It costs $780 a year.
What you could make
- Documents and Markdown: an app builder makes these well.
What you could not
- A search engine with an AI model behind it.
- An AI agent, with the models and the safeguards behind it.
- It plugs into other products, GitHub, GitLab and Slack among them, and has an API.
- Sharing with other people, which means accounts and invitations.
- The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.
What this rests on. GitBook’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
